Fun and Games

In the past week:

  • I have started getting hot flashes (and I know my friend have told me they suck, but, man, they really suck; like they're-messing-up-my-sleep-big-time suck)

  • Had my far-too-old laptop finally die on me, taking two hours at an Apple genius bar and half a day of wiping and reinstalling and restoring to get it working again (I've now ordered the new machine I meant to get six months ago, lest it die on me again)

I've got my fingers crossed the universe doesn't have any other little surprises stored up for me.

    Fic for July 4th

Since it's July 4th, a.k.a. Steve Rogers' birthday, I thought I'd post the link to the two Cap Reverse BB stories I wrote.

    Brooklyn Runaways
    (12822 words)
    Art by: slaughterme_barnes
    Fandom: Captain America (Movies)
    Rating: Explicit
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes, Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: Pre-Serum Steve Rogers, Great Depression
    Summary:
"Aw, Stevie, don't be like that." Bucky's voice was muffled by the door, but even given that, it didn't sound right. "Open up."

Steve fumbled with the lock, threw open the door, and there was Bucky, standing in the hallway, a suitcase in his hand and a bruise on one side of his jaw.

"We gotta go, Stevie," he said. "We gotta go now."

When Steve and Bucky get careless, they end up having to run away. But maybe running away will find them the home they've always needed.

I lucked out on the initial claim and got one of my absolute top choices, and lovely piece of art that let me write skinny!Steve and Bucky in the '30s. The artist also did a second piece of art that inspired me to break the smut barrier in my new fandom and write Steve/Bucky sexy tiems, so that was fun.

That was all I was supposed to write, but then a couple of weeks before the final deadline, this lovely piece of art with the Avengers as characters from a Chinese wuxia epic went up for a pinch hit. And no one else claimed it. I hadn't put this one of my list of initial claims because I didn't think I could do it justice. But my insanely optimistic muse suddenly assured me I could get the job done in two weeks. Stupid muse, but I did it, thanks in part to a lovely artist who had lots of ideas for the background of the characters.

    Wuxia Avengers: Heroes' Justice
    (10355 words)
    Art by: potofsoup
Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
    Rating: Mature
Warnings: Major Character Death (but not the main characters)
    Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes, Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson (Marvel), Natasha Romanov (Marvel), Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Nick Fury, Howling Commandos
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Wuxia AU, Don't worry the Avengers don't die
    Summary:
Captain Steve Rogers was a trusted member of the Emperor's Palace Guard, but then his entire company was wiped out by the Red Skull. Now Steve seeks only vengeance for the death of his sword brothers and the man he loved. He thinks his is a solitary quest, but on his journey he will find fellow avengers to help him. Bu they will all have to come together to defeat the fearsome Hydra fighter, the Winter Assassin.

Now I'm going to take a few days break to recover from the stress writing of 10K words in two weeks before I get back to work on my Stucky BB story.

Happy July 4th to all my American friends out there!

    Footie, 2017 Edition

Ros' soccer team just had their fifth game, and this is the first chance I've had to post about the footie season. I got paired up to coach with another dad this year, so the Sweetie briefly thought he was getting off helping out. But it turns out the two of us were really bad at running lineups, so the Sweetie is back on the roster. And another dad, who was a goalie, volunteered to help out coaching the goalies so there are four of us running the team.

There was some period of adjustment, but we're now all playing to our strengths. I do the overall organizing and running drills at practices, the goalie dad drills the goalies and helps with strategy during games and the other dad helps run drills and keeping the kids enthusiastic. Non-sporty Sweetie does his bit making sure everyone gets an equal amount of playing time on the field.

We've been having practices every week, and it's really starting to pay off. Last night the girls were actually passing and running plays with each other, and we pulled off a 0 – 4 win against a team that has some of the best players in the league and two coaches who usually have one of the better teams. So, yay!

Ros was in goal the first half, and she's really doing fab. I think working with a coach who is NOT me is good for her. Our goalie dad is really pushing her, and she's made some fabulous saves.

On the downside, our goalie in the second half sprained her finger, and since we're on a full-sized field and she was in the other end and didn't say anything, we didn't know she needed to be pulled off until one of the other girls rotated off and told us she was crying. I felt horrible! But her dad (the non-goalie coach) tells me she's okay.

It's a nice bunch of girls, and they're playing well together so it's looking to be a fun rest of the season. And they actually come to practices! (Last year, I was lucky some weeks to have three girls at practice. This year, most of them show up.)

    London Trip 2017

I flew back from London last night, after a super short, but super awesome trip.

The main reason I flew over was to see Take That, but since I was going to be over anyway, I thought I'd take in a play as well. My lovely host, [personal profile] halotolerant, picked The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at the Donmar, and it turned out to be a brilliant choice. It's a Brecht play, a satire on fascism, and starred the brilliant Lenny Henry. Seeing it the day after the British election, it took a whole different, hopeful tone. The main floor of the Donmar had been set up as a speakeasy, with the audience sitting at tables scattered through the floor, and various audience members pulled into the action. The strongest bit was the end when the audience is either asked to stand with the reprehensible Ui or to resist against him. A heartening number of the audience stood with the resistance on the floor, hands linked together. It was an amazing theatrical experience.

Saturday, we started with a leisurely shopping trip around the West End, broken up by a delicious dim sum lunch, then headed over to the O2 for the concert.

Pics and concert details this way )

Sunday, was a much less energetic day, but no less awesome. Halo and I met up with [personal profile] solosundance and [personal profile] heliophile (waves!) for lunch at the wonderful Tas, and then popped around the corner to the British Museum to see the Hokusai exhibit, which was as great as I'd hoped. Halo then suggested a visit to a fab little LGBT exhibit they have, with a side trip to the Warren Cup, an amazing bit of Roman homoerotica.

Then there was a nice dinner and a viewing of The Winter Soldier, because apparently I'm not the only one with Cap and Bucky feels.

It was a short, concentrated trip, but I feel like it had exactly the right mix of doing stuff to just hanging out.

    Hockey and Stucky!

Since Ros is doing her black belt next year (OMG!) she won't be playing hockey.

I, however, have signed up again for the women's learn to play lessons. I don't even know how this happened, but it turns out I kinda enjoy hockey. Or at least learning hockey skills. I may sign up for league play the year after.

In fannish news, I've got my Cap RBB story finished, formatted and ready to go, and my artist and I have a game plan for posting. My posting date is May 28th, so I'll be able to share the story and the fabulous art that inspired it then.

I've also just crossed the 10,000 word mark for my Stucky BB story, and have finally outlined where this sucker is going. And I've got a decent summary put together ready for the artist claims. There are, apparently, way more writers than artists, but I'm not going to stress about the claims too much. This is a story I want to write whether or not there's art for it. Not that it wouldn't be cool to get claimed.

As my first official DW post, I thought I'd put up the pic I was going to post on LJ before the TOS thing happened.

    LJ to DW

I've had a Dreamwidth account I've never done anything with, but LJ's latest TOS is my cue to get out of Dodge. (I clicked the damn thing so I could post this and import my journal to DW, but I'm done after that. Being subject to the laws of the Russian Federation is not something I'm at all keen on.)

I'm przed over at DW. (There's nowt there yet, but there will be.)

Most of my fannish life these days is over at Tumblr at trappingsofzed.tumblr.com. (I'm not keen on the platform for conversation, but it's good for the pretty, and for fic notifications. And that's where all the Cap Stucky action seems to be.)

I'm sad to leave LJ. Just checked and I hit my 14th anniversary on the site a couple of days ago, and that's a lot of interacting with all you wonderful people. Hopefully I'll still see all y'all in other fannish spaces.

    Basketball and Take That

Just finished watching the Badgers lose a heartbreaker. The Florida Gators managed a 3 pointer in the last second of overtime to beat them by one. So close. But it was a great game.

To cheer myself up afterwards, I watched Take That's Red Nose Day Carpool Karaoke, which is exactly as much fun as you'd think it would be.

Now I'm totally jazzed to see them in June.

    Wisconsin beat Villanova!

And it was a really great game! Wisconsin led the first half, Villanova took over a lot of the second, and it all game down to the final 3 seconds, when Wisconsin held onto a 3 point lead.

There was much yelling at the screen, much to the bemusement of the Sweetie. Ros kept being affronted when foul calls when against the Badgers, bless her.

So, the Bucky icon will live on this year until at least Friday, when they play their next game.

    Sports!

Apart from the whole Stucky obsession, the other thing keeping me busy these days is sports! And it's March madness, so time to bring out the icon for that other Bucky. (Though how awesome would a Winter Soldier Bucky Badger icon be? I wish I could still draw.)

The Wisconsin Badgers beat the Virginia Tech Hokies (and seriously, Virginia Tech, the Hokies?) on Thursday night, so they'll be playing Villanova this afternoon. Considering Villanova is a #1 seed, this could so south quickly. Or not.

I won't be watching the game live because I'll be taking Ros to her second last hockey practice of the season. Yay for the imminent end of the hockey season! Although also boo, because that means I've only got two of my hockey lessons left. I'm enjoying it rather more than I thought I would, though I still kinda suck. My goals were 1)stopping, 2) crossovers and 3) changing direction without stopping. I've got the stopping down, the right foot crossovers are coming but the left ones are still terrifying, and I can kinda go from backwards to forwards without stopping but not forwards to backwards.

I don't know that I ever want to play in a league (though scrimmages are actually fun now that my skating's a bit better and I finally splurged and got a properly fitted pair of skates), but I may sign up for lessons again next year.

My final sports news is that we finally got the pictures from our Taekwondo Black Belt Spectacular. My favourite is actually from the technical rehearsal of the self defence part of the ceremony, me kicking my partner, one of the fourth degree candidates:
    00lj-bbspec01.jpg

A couple more pics below the cut )

I have unfortunately become one of those people who gets their black belt and then drastically cuts back on their training. Mostly because I tore my piriformis muscle (which is a little muscle behind your glute, so I officially have a pain in the butt) at a class in September and the stupid thing is taking forever to heal.

A Very Late Yuletide Post and 2016 Writing

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted here.

I wasn't on the computer or online much during the holidays, so I didn't post about the lovely stories I got for Yuletide. There were two (two!) both for Velvet Goldmine, a movie I love past reason.

The first one is the pairing of my heart, Arthur/Curt, and shows them a few years older and in Berlin. It's beautifully written and a perfect take on the two of them:

Sound and Vision (2272 words) by yeats
    Fandom: Velvet Goldmine
    Rating: Explicit
    Relationships: Arthur Stuart/Curt Wild
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Christmas, Oral Sex, Yuleporn
Summary: Arthur and Curt in Berlin, December 1989.

The second story is a much more melancholy take on what might have happened to Arthur if he'd failed entirely to achieve his dreams and his night with Curt had never gone further.

Not-Returning Time (3035 words) by thegirlwiththemouseyhair
    Fandom: Velvet Goldmine
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Arthur Stuart/Curt Wild, Arthur Stuart/Original Character, Ray/Arthur Stuart
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Unrequited Love, Loneliness, Implied/Referenced Homophobia, Awkward Flirting, Self-Esteem Issues
Summary: Shop boy Arthur Stuart tries to make a proper life for himself, in between surviving and reminiscing about Curt Wild and the dead glam rock scene.

My Yuletide assignment was for Spy, a fun movie I love and think is a lot of fun. My recipient asked for Susan's back story, so my muse decided it would turn a wacky comedy into a meditation on self-esteem and fighting sexism. With some female ass-kicking thrown in.

    A (Not So) Well-Behaved Woman (1982 words)
    Fandom: Spy (2015)
Summary: Susan's mother raises her to be a nice, neat, well-behaved girl... Or how Susan Cooper learned how to be the spy she was always meant to be.

One of my favourite Yuletide stories was this Spy story that's much more in keeping with the wacky tone of the movie. It's funny and filthy and just a little bit touching.

Every Single Holiday (4043 words) by rsadelle
    Fandom: Spy (2015)
    Relationships: Susan Cooper/Rick Ford
Additional Tags: Dick in a Box, 5+1 Things
Summary: When it comes to gift-giving, Ford's repertoire is somewhat limited.

My writing wrap up is going to be dead easy this year. The first part of the year was all martial arts all the time, and then there were months of relaxing because I was knackered. Then in the fall, the Cap Stucky fandom hit me like a truck. So apart from Yuletide, the only other fic I finished was the Stucky one from the end of the year. (I've got two half-finished stories on the hard drive, one Pros and one Take That, but the whole Stucky thing hit me hard in the fall and shorted out all other writing.)

The Altar Boy Act (1411 words)
    Fandom: Captain America (Movies)
    Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Summary: Stark thinks Steve is a prude. Bucky knows better.

My total word count for the year was a paltry 3393. But that's okay. I've already got that more than beat for the new year. I'm awaiting a beta on 23,000 words of the first two stories in a Stucky series, and have already started the final story. That one looks like it's going to hit at least 10,000 words.

A belated Happy New Year, everyone!
