A Weekend at the Theatre

Just back from a longish weekend spent at the theatre in Stratford. (Ontario, alas, not England.) The honour of slashiest play goes to Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida. Not only were there many buff men wearing not a whole lot, but Achilles and Patroclus were portrayed explicitly as lovers, god bless 'em. Otherwise, it was a good, if occasionally problematic, production.

The best play we saw, surprisingly, was The Taming of the Shrew. The production was set in the Old West, which gave rise to a lot of fun visual jokes. And the actors and director somehow managed to create a real tenderness between Petruchio and Kate, in spite of the incredibly dodgy gender politics of the play. No mean feat.
