Alatriste to Play Toronto Film Fest

Was very excited to hear that Alatriste will be playing this year's Toronto Film Fest as a Special Presentation. (The news release announcing this is here, about half way down the page.)

This is now officially the movie I must get tickets to at this year's fest. Because really, there is nothing better than Viggo with a sword. (Okay, Ray Doyle with a gun comes close.)

...Huh. How odd. Is this Captain Alatriste? (Wait, lemme go read the release...)

It is! *blinks*

That's very neat. I just read the first book of the series when I was in Spain, having picked it up on a whim. It's very oldfashioned in style, without Dumas' irony; terrific swashbuckling, but it lacks a little somethin'. The swordfights ought to look awesome on the big screen, though. Go Viggo!

I got the first book a year ago and enjoyed the swashbuckling aspects of the novel, though I did think it read a bit like a precise for a film rather than a work unto itself. There seemed to be some sort of vital spark missing from it. (I tend to want to like Perez Reverte's books more than I actually do.) But as a film, I can't wait to see it. Especially with Viggo in the lead.
