Toronto Film Fest, Day Five
A light day today: one film. Which gives me a break before the barrage of four film days, with midnight screenings, to come.
Title: Eleven Men Out
Director: Robert I. Douglas
Country: Iceland
P's Rating: Recommended
Ottar is a leading player in an Icelandic professional football team. Almost on a whim, he comes out to reporter in the locker room to secure the magazine cover for his interview. He gets the cover, but also gets thrown off the team. He also gets grief from his father, brother, ex-girlfriend and his teenage son. But he does gain a spot on a gay friendly football team, along with a new boyfriend. Eleven Men Out is low key, and utterly charming. It manages to deal with issues of gay rights, without being at all preachy. And it's also very funny, in a sly, Scandanavian sort of way.
