Hi!! I'm new here and still trying to understand how it works :P

Name: Lia

Age group: Late twenties

Country: Born in Brazil, currently living in Germany

Subscription/Access policy: I don't have any locked entries and don't plan on having them. Feel free to subscribe! I'll subscribe back :)

About me: I was born and raised in central Brazil and am currently an exchange student in Germany. My major is Linguistics and Literature. I'm still not sure what career I'd like to pursue - for now, I'd describe me as an aspiring writer and researcher. I'm bisexual and in a long-term relationship. Since 2020, I've been in treatment for bipolar disorder. My current interests include fandom, creative writing, reading (especially Nachkriegsliteratur and Brazilian literature), linguistic variation, traveling, and hiking. I'm a bit awkward, but love to talk and exchange thoughts and interests!

Fannish interests: The usual stuff - reading fanfiction, shipping, fanart etc

Fandoms: I'm currently more involved with bandom (mainly FOB and P!ATD), but still have a lot of love for fandoms I used to be active in, such as Sherlock BBC, Doctor Who, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, and Homestuck. I'm also a Little Monster, a big fan of Fleabag, and into vertical dramas :D (has anyone here watched Pool Boy? Haha)

Ships: Ryan Ross/Brendon Urie, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Dave Strider/John Egbert, Dirk Strider/John Egbert, Fleabag/Priest, Doctor/Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones, Dave Grohl/Taylor Hawkins, many ships from vertical dramas etc

What I like to post about: I've been mostly venting and talking about my day, but I'd like to post about fannish stuff, other interests of mine, and original works (mostly poems)

Before adding me, you should know: I'm mostly okay with RPF and vent a lot. DNI if your ships involve incest or anything illegal (you know what I mean), or if you don't respect the fact that I don’t like to meddle in other people's drama.

new year, same bull

Happy new year! How can 2026 only be a week old? It feels like Christmas and winter break was months ago.

Christmas was delightful, time away from work was delightful, new years eve games with friends was delightful, ending 2025/starting 2026 with the Stranger Things finale was delightful. I found it very satisfying--for me, it was a ten year wrap up that took care to feel wrapped up. I can picture a lot of happy lives for them all, but there's also still room for fics.

Less delightful is that Dad's pre-cardioversion echo showed a new heart problem, a ventricular strain, which often causes a-fib, which it has. And research seems to show that the two together lead to poor heart prognosis. And then on top of it, the valve that they repaired three years ago failed and is leaking again. Only when dad went to the cardiologist this week, he didn't ask questions and he says that the doctor didn't say anything about it, just that dad can decide to still do the cardioversion if he wants to. But why did that go from yes to can do it? What are the risks? What are the benefits? Part of his symptoms is memory issues, so has he forgotten parts of the discussion? Doctor appointments can have a lot of information given at once. I think mom is working on questions and maybe a second appointment to talk things over.

I started my new PsA med last weekend, which I'm excited and hopeful for. But in the meantime, while it builds in my system, it's barely better than no meds. Add in a delay on my estrogen and progesterone and I am sore, slow, tired, and sluggish. I had to take the afternoon off today because I didn't have the energy to move. Luckily the e&p came in, so I can pick it up tomorrow. I hope it helps.

I bundled some streaming together, added HBO, and am now paying less for 3 than I was for 2. \o/ Which means that I binged Heated Rivalry on Saturday, and again Tuesday night when trying to distract myself from Dad's health. I liked it a lot the first go around, but I really struggled with figuring out the timeframe for each episode and how little they used the names of most teammates. When I had it down for the second viewing, I liked it even more, and caught a lot more, too. A lot of the writers I follow have started writing HR fic, too, which I'm delighted by. There's a lot to catch and analyze--I really like Veronica Vee on Insta, who does deep dives into the directing and staging.

9-1-1 starts tonight, and I'm less enthused than usual. The first part of the season was rough, without a lot of character beats and without a lot of team bonding, and I really miss those aspects. Maybe things will be more even for this next set.

Tonight is also the premiere of The Pitt season 2, and I'm excited to watch that with the fam this weekend. Mel!!!!

There is a rally about ice/minneapolis/our town right now, just outside the library, and periodically there will be loud roars and cheers. It's pouring rain, so they're under our overhang instead of in the park, and I am curious about the turnout. But not curious enough to expend any energy walking to that side of the room, ha.

Let's see what I can accomplish tonight that requires little to no brain power or energy!

Day 1815: "The only thing that can stop me."

Posted by Matt Kiser

Day 1815

Today in one sentence: The Senate voted 52-47 to advance a war powers resolution that would require congressional approval before Trump could order further military action “within or against Venezuela”; Trump said that his power as commander in chief is constrained only by “my own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me”; JD Vance blamed Renee Nicole Good for getting killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, calling her death a “tragedy of her own making”; the FBI revoked Minnesota investigators’ access to evidence and took sole control of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Good by an ICE officer; the House passed a clean three-year extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, and a bipartisan spending package to fund several federal agencies ahead of a Jan. 30 deadline; and Trump plans to ask Congress to raise U.S. military spending to $1.5 trillion in 2027.

1/ The Senate voted 52-47 to advance a war powers resolution that would require congressional approval before Trump could order further military action “within or against Venezuela.” The move followed Trump’s remarks that the U.S. would be “running Venezuela” and “taking oil,” and that “only time will tell” how long U.S. oversight would last. The measure, however, is unlikely to become law because it would still need House passage and Trump’s signature. Nevertheless, Trump denounced Republican senators who supported the resolution, saying they “should be ashamed” and “should never be elected to office again,” because the measure “greatly hampers American Self Defense and National Security” and is “impeding the President’s authority as Commander in Chief.” He added that Republicans who voted with Democrats were acting to “take our Powers,” framing the resolution as an attack on his presidency rather than a check on military action. (Politico / Associated Press / NBC News / New York Times / Politico / Wall Street Journal / ABC News / Washington Post / CBS News / CNBC / Bloomberg / The Guardian / Axios)

2/ Trump said that his power as commander in chief is constrained only by “my own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me,” claiming that he alone decides when international law or treaties apply to U.S. military action. “I don’t need international law,” Trump said, adding that “it depends what your definition of international law is.” Trump described his threats, unpredictability, and recent military action as tools of leverage, citing “the success of” U.S. strikes and interventions and insisted that adversaries act cautiously because “I would be very unhappy if” they did otherwise. He also dismissed the independence of alliances, saying NATO need to “shape up” and argued that without the U.S., “Russia I can tell you is not at all concerned with any other country but us.” (New York Times)

3/ JD Vance blamed Renee Nicole Good for getting killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, calling her death a “tragedy of her own making” and claiming she “tried to hit” the officer with her SUV, prompting the agent to fire “in self-defense.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed that Good was “intentionally trying to mow down ICE agents,” describing it as “domestic terrorism.” The shooting occurred after ICE agents ordered Good, a U.S. citizen, to exit her SUV on a residential street and an officer positioned himself in front of the vehicle as it began moving forward. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected those claims, saying video evidence shows Good attempting to drive away rather than aim her vehicle at officers. (CNBC / Wall Street Journal / The Hill / ABC News / Washington Post)

4/ The FBI revoked Minnesota investigators’ access to evidence and took sole control of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. In a statement, the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the U.S. attorney’s office reversed an earlier plan for a joint investigation and blocked the agency from case materials, witnesses, and scene evidence, which prevents an independent state investigation. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Minnesota authorities lacked jurisdiction. (The Guardian / NPR / New York Times / CBS News / Washington Post)

5/ The House passed a clean three-year extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits. 17 Republicans joined Democrats in a 230-196 vote after a discharge petition forced the bill to the floor over Speaker Mike Johnson’s objections. The measure would revive subsidies that lapsed at the end of last year, and the Congressional Budget Office said it would add $80.6 billion to the deficit over 10 years while adding about 4 million more people insured in 2028 than under current law. The bill heads to the Senate, where leaders said it lacks the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. The chamber rejected a similar clean extension last month with Republicans demanding a shorter extension paired with income limits, minimum premiums, health savings account options, anti-fraud provisions, and abortion-related language. (Axios / NPR / Washington Post / Associated Press / New York Times / ABC News / NBC News / Bloomberg / CBS News / CNBC / The Hill)

6/ The House passed a bipartisan spending package to fund several federal agencies ahead of a Jan. 30 deadline, rejecting Trump’s demands to cut funding for the National Science Foundation by 57%, the EPA by more than $4 billion, and the National Park Service budget by about one-third. The roughly $180 billion measure instead holds science funding flat, trims the EPA by about 4%, and imposes far smaller reductions across energy and environmental programs, while funding the Justice and Commerce Departments through the fiscal year. The package still requires Senate approval, but White House officials said Trump would sign it, and congressional leaders said talks are continuing on the remaining spending bills needed to keep the government fully open. (Associated Press / Politico / New York Times)

7/ Trump plans to ask Congress to raise U.S. military spending to $1.5 trillion in 2027 – a more than 50% increase that would add roughly $500 billion to $600 billion to the Pentagon’s current budget. Trump said the money would fund a “Dream Military” that would keep the country “SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe.” He claimed the increase would be paid for with tariff revenue, even though government estimates show recent tariff collections fall hundreds of billions short. (New York Times / Politico / Associated Press / Bloomberg)

The 2026 midterms are in 299 days; the 2028 presidential election is in 1,034 days.

✏️ Notables.

  1. A federal judge disqualified another Trump U.S. attorney, throwing out subpoenas targeting New York Attorney General Letitia James. The judge said the Justice Department bypassed statutory limits to keep the prosecutor in place. At least five U.S. attorneys have been disqualified by federal judges after the administration used workarounds to keep them in office without Senate confirmation. (Politico / Associated Press)

  2. Trump signed a presidential memorandum directing the U.S. to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a Senate-ratified treaty that underpins all global climate negotiations. However, it remains unclear whether Trump has the legal authority to do so unilaterally. The administration also said it would end U.S. participation in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.N.’s main climate science body. (The Guardian / New York Times / NBC News / Grist / Axios / Politico / Reuters)

  3. Trump directed the U.S. to withdraw from 66 international organizations and agreements. The White House said the organizations were “contrary to the interests of the United States.” The decision ends U.S. participation and funding for international groups on migration, women’s rights, trade, education, and international law. (Washington Post / New York Times / Los Angeles Times / ABC News)

  4. The House failed to override Trump’s first two vetoes of his second term, leaving in place his rejection of two bipartisan bills backing a Colorado water pipeline and a Florida land measure for the Miccosukee Tribe. The override votes fell short of the two-thirds threshold, even though both bills had previously passed the House and Senate without opposition. The holidays felt like a marathon this year and I'm only now just feeling like I have a chance to stop and breathe. Not bad at all, but I just never had that moment of recharge.

It was a good holiday. Friends got married then we spent a week with my family. Then home for New Years and a little bit of time to chill before back to work. I got the waterfall dress finished well in time for the wedding and was very happy with it. It fit in nicely with the vibe and was very comfortable!

I'm very slowly cutting out my next sewing project - a jumper in black and gray plaid flannel.

Monday was back to work and I took advantage of the boss till being away to catch up on a whack of scanning and filing, and putting away all the items that have ended up at my place to be used as gifts. What was going to be my decorative office shelf now looks like a mini game store XD I'd be more annoyed but I'm getting a home office allowance, so technically they're paying my rent for the room.

Boss was back today and it was nice to get some idea of a rhythm again.

--

We watched the first three episodes of Heated Rivalry before the Holidays break. My government funded hockey yaoi ^_^ (I do somewhat twitch at the use of the word yaoi, as to me that means anime, but I acknowledge that if you start calling it hockey slash there is some ambiguity XD )

We came back after the holidays to finish the last three episodes. It was lovely. I see why everyone is so ridiculous about it. I then spent a bunch of time watching straight-dude youtube channels do reviews and they were lovely. There were tears. It was really positive and encouraging and it's fun to feel shiny new fannish about something that is shiny new for everyone (I'm having shiny new moments with DC, but that's not a shiny new fandom in any way).

In the way that faandom exists to fill in the gaps, I find I'm not looking for the smutty fics there, but rather the post-show found family fics, and the team moments. And stuff that actually focuses on the hockey :D

The Gentleman Caller also got me a "Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird" shirt XD

--

On the DC front I'm enjoying my comics and went to the shop to pick up this week's comics before we went off to dinner to celebrate the Gentleman Caller's birthday. One of the things I was looking for wasn't on the shelf, and it turns out it had an unexpected number of people in for it so they had sold out. BUT! the owner had a stash and let me have one from there. He said when he sees something selling quick, he'll put some aside so good customers who aren't able to show up immediately still have a chance. I was perfectly willing to wait until they could order me in a copy but it was nice. I got a good grade in buying comics, which is normal to want and possible to achieve XD
(I feel like it's a bit of a reward for the time when I impulsively bought a comic for a kid clearly trying to decide on which comics in his box to buy and which ones would have to wait for his next allowance)

Dinner was at a restored art deco department store restaurant, from back when high end department stores had fancy dining options. It was a lovely meal and excellent atmosphere.

--

And now the Gentleman Caller is cooking dinner and I'm finally getting groceries ordered and have high hopes of actually doing the December HouseHold Math tonight. And then maybe I'll feel ready for the new year :D

Fannish 50 2026 #02: Stargate reboot...yay?

I went to the Stargate movie with minimal expectations. It premiered in October IIRC, which is not a time for a movie expected to be a blockbuster. But it starred Kurt Russell, who had been a favorite since his The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes days, and James Spader instantly captivated me as Daniel Jackson, and it was a solid fun action film.

Again, I had little expectations for the series. Richard Dean Anderson was just some guy who starred in a show I didn't watch. But it was on HBO IIRC, which I had at the time, and I'll give most sci-fi series a try. Michael Shanks did well as Daniel, Samantha and Teal'c were good characters, and I really enjoyed it until 5th or 6th season or so, and the constant mucking about with the cast members.

I was a little burned out on Stargate SG1 by the time SGA was announced, and seriously contemplated not watching it. But I'd been really amused by David Hewlett as Rodney McKay in his SG1 appearances and decided I'd give it a try. I wasn't immediately grabbed, it was The Storm/The Eye that really made me fall in love with the show and McShep.

Though again, cast changes, and bringing in Jewel Staite as Keller and having her scold Rodney a lot, ugh. But I still loved my McShep and was highly annoyed when SGA's cancellation was announced in favor of SGU. I did watch the trailers for SGU but it seemed dark and depressing and none of the actors convinced me to give it a try. I watched Rodney's one appearance and found the plot stupid, pleased that I hadn't bothered.

The first time I saw an announcement for the reboot, it was either Dean Devlin or Roland Emmerich, TPTB for the movie, who was going to be the showrunner, and they were returning to immediately after the movie, wiping out all the TV history. I still like O'Neill and Jackson as characters, and I can appreciate why someone might like a new start, but this didn't excite me.

The newest announcement is that Martin Gero will be the showrunner. He was involved with the TV show, so perhaps he'd be less inclined to wipe out all that history, but who knows? Anyone might want a clean slate.

So... I feel pretty ambivalent, actually. If a new show brings interest to the previous ones, and new rewatches, residuals for the actors, maybe a new infusion into the fandom, etc., that is excellent, truly excellent. But I'm not banking on General Sheppard making guest appearances, so that diminishes my excitement.

When I have loved Stargate, I have loved it. I rewatch the movie occasionally, those first four seasons of SG1 were consistently excellent, I adore so many of the SGA eps. But it's also definitely had some jaded/yeah whatever, I'll see how it goes reactions from me. I hope the new show happens! I hope I love it! I hope it doesn't wipe out the TV history and we see cameos from many of the previous characters! Fingers crossed!

But, well, we'll see.

Roots of Madness 1-3

A new comic from Ignite Press by Stephanie Williams, Letizia Cadonici (main artist) and Juliet Nneka (alternate covers.) At the turn of the century, Etta, a young Black woman, studies both science and a book of old remedies she inherited from her mother, along with some dire warnings she doesn't heed.

This is a really interesting historical fantasy with elements of cosmic horror and dark academia. Each issue has alternate covers in very different styles. I like both of them.

I'll be following this one.

Content notes: So far racism is part of the world and why the characters make some choices, rather than violent or constantly present on-page. The rabbits are used in experiments that are not cruel - Etta tests a healing ointment on one that has an injury - but they seem likely to eventually turn into zombies or get possessed by cosmic horrors or merge with eldritch plants.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is REALLY good

Thanks to my podcasting co-host's connections, we got screeners for the first six episodes, and here is my low-spoiler review as per the rules of the embargo.

TL;DR it has a huge heart, and a series about rebuilding democracy and the infrastructure of a functional society in the wake of imperial decay and environmental devastation is exactly what the world needs right now. It overtly follows in the footsteps of Prodigy, as a jumping in point for a young new fan, and the relationship between Holly Hunter as the Academy chancellor and Sandro Rosta as a new cadet who is skeptical of Starfleet and the Federation (and with good reason!) is a real gift.

I'm reluctant to commit to this, because recency bias is a thing, but it's absolutely my favourite live-action series of the streaming era (and you guys will recall that I loved Discovery and wrote a lot of fic for it!), and I think it's very possible I love it more than Voyager. Certainly it has the best opening six episodes of any Trek bar TOS.

How Hackers Are Fighting Back Against ICE

Posted by Cooper Quintin

Read more about how ICE has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on surveillance technology to spy on anyone—and potentially everyone—in the United States, and how to follow the Homeland Security Spending Trail..

ICE has been invading U.S. cities, targeting, surveilling, harassing, assaulting, detaining, and torturing people who are undocumented immigrants. They also have targeted people with work permits, asylum seekers, permanent residents (people holding “green cards”), naturalized citizens, and even citizens by birth. ICE has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on surveillance technology to spy on anyoneand potentially everyonein the United States. It can be hard to imagine how to defend oneself against such an overwhelming force. But a few enterprising hackers have started projects to do counter surveillance against ICE, and hopefully protect their communities through clever use of technology.

Let’s start with Flock, the company behind a number of automated license plate reader (ALPR) and other camera technologies. You might be surprised at how many Flock cameras there are in your community. Many large and small municipalities around the country have signed deals with Flock for license plate readers to track the movement of all cars in their city. Even though these deals are signed by local police departments, oftentimes ICE also gains access

Because of their ubiquity, people are interested in finding out where and how many Flock cameras are in their community. One project that can help with this is the OUI-SPY, a small piece of open source hardware. The OUI-SPY runs on a cheap Arduino compatible chip called an ESP-32. There are multiple programs available for loading on the chip, such as “Flock You,” which allows people to detect Flock cameras and “Sky-Spy” to detect overhead drones. There’s also “BLE Detect,” which detects various Bluetooth signals including ones from Axon, Meta’s Ray-Bans that secretly record you, and more. It also has a mode commonly known as “fox hunting” to track down a specific device. Activists and researchers can use this tool to map out different technologies and quantify the spread of surveillance.

There’s also the open source Wigle app which is primarily designed for mapping out Wi-Fi, but also has the ability to make an audio alert when a specific Wi-Fi or Bluetooth identifier is detected. This means you can set it up to get a notification when it detects products from Flock, Axon, or other nasties in their vicinity.

One enterprising YouTuber, Benn Jordan, figured out a way to fool Flock cameras into not recording his license plate simply by painting some minor visual noise on his license plate. This is innocuous enough that any human will still be able to read his license plate, but it completely prevented Flock devices from recognizing his license plate as a license plate at the time. Some states have outlawed drivers obscuring their license plates, so taking such action is not recommended.

Jordan later went on to discover hundreds of misconfigured Flock cameras that were exposing their administrator interface without a password on the public internet. This would allow anyone with an internet connection to view a live surveillance feed, download 30 days of video, view logs, and more. The cameras pointed at parks, public trails, busy intersections, and even a playground. This was a massive breach of public trust and a huge mistake for a company that claims to be working for public safety.

Other hackers have taken on the task of open-source intelligence and community reporting. One interesting example is deflock.me and alpr.watch, which are crowdsourced maps of ALPR cameras. Much like the OUI-SPY project, this allows activists to map out and expose Flock surveillance cameras in their community.

There have also been several ICE reporting apps released, including apps to report ICE sightings in your area such Stop ICE Alerts, ICEOUT.org, and ICE Block. ICEBlock was delisted by Apple at the request of Attorney General Pam Bondi, a fact we are suing over. There is also Eyes Up, an app to securely record and archive ICE raids, which was taken down by Apple earlier this year.

Another interesting project documenting ICE and creating a trove of open-source intelligence is ICE List Wiki which contains info on companies that have contracts with ICE, incidents and encounters with ICE, and vehicles ICE uses.

People without programming knowledge can also get involved. In Chicago, people used whistles to warn their neighbors that ICE was present or in the area. Many people 3D-printed whistles along with instructional booklets to hand out to their communities, allowing a wider distribution of whistles and consequently earlier warnings for their neighbors.

Many hackers have started hosting digital security trainings for their communities or building web sites with security advice, including how to remove your data from the watchful eyes of the surveillance industry. To reach a broader community, trainers have even started hosting trainings on how to defend their communities and what to do in an ICE raid in video games, such as Fortnight

There is also EFF’s own Rayhunter project for detecting cell-site simulators, about which we have written extensively. Rayhunter runs on a cheap mobile hotspot and doesn’t require deep technical knowledge to use.

It’s important to remember that we are not powerless. Even in the face of a domestic law enforcement presence with massive surveillance capabilities and military-esque technologies, there are still ways to engage in surveillance self-defense. We cannot give into nihilism and fear. We must continue to find small ways to protect ourselves and our communities, and when we can, fight back.

EFF is not affiliated with any of these projects (other than Rayhunter) and does not endorse them. We don’t make any statements about the legality of using any of these projects. Please consult with an attorney to determine what risks there may be.

All that's left is your haircut...

We have, in fact, made our way through the list. My bedroom closet now has ONLY clothes and shoes and my ironing board. Perfection. It just needs organization - designer coming Tuesday.

The storage area used to look like this:

PXL_20260104_204221842

And what you couldn't see was an even bigger pile o' crap.

Now it looks like this:

PXL_20260108_213800020

I need to go through all those plastic boxes and I'll be half that shit can go right to the dumpster but that's a project for another time.

In addition to the closet, the utility room gained some breathing room, too. Nice.

We took Biggie to the vet. His bladder is way better but he still has stones. One option was to operate tomorrow to remove them. But the option the vet recommended was to try one more time to dissolve the rocks. He's now back to a pill twice a day. For a month. If the stones are still there, then operation time. Meanwhile he's Jimmy Buffet stoned on the gabapentin I gave him for the vet visit. And it's pretty hilarious.

Me and Biggie at the vet.

Windsor Mounds in Lorman, Mississippi

Daniell and Freeland family cemetery sitting on one of the Windsor Mounds

Long before the decadent columns of the nearby Windsor Mansion were raised, this area tucked in the Mississippi hills was reshaped by Indigenous hands. Between 1100 and 1600 A.D., Native mound builders raised four rectangular earthen platforms overlooking the river valley. Their purpose is now uncertain—perhaps ceremonial, perhaps residential—but the mounds endure as the oldest monuments on this land. Evidence of a structure were located on mound B through a 2013 excavation.

Centuries later, one of these mounds took on a new life as the final resting place for the owners of the plantation. Found tucked away north of the Windsor Ruins, the cemetery sits on Mound C, where the graves of the Daniell and Freeland families can be found. It is rumored that the Windsor Ruins remain haunted by the inhabitants of this cemetery, with sightings of both the original owner, Smith Coffee Daniell II, and the graveyard's first inhabitant, Frisby Freeland, an American Revolutionary War soldier, having been reported.

Today, the Windsor Mounds still sit quietly among thick woods and fields, with the cemetery remaining visible on the mound. A historical marker can be found just up the road from the ruins, offering a map detailing the location of each mound.

Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.

But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.

Or,

Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.

He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

Chapter Summary: Breha, backed up by Bail and Obi-Wan, confronts her former not-husband and tells him just what she thinks of him. For some reason, Marco still believes he should get another chance.

He’s not very bright, is he?

And when the smoke clears, the Force (and everyone else) is satisfied with the outcome. Which is good, because first thing tomorrow morning, a new Chancellor of the Republic is going to be sworn in, and the peaceful transfer of power is a good thing.

Does it seem slow to rain? Does it feel like soft moss?

Now that we are back in the swing of the year, my days are marked by doctors' appointments. I preferred being outside the calendar. I did dream briefly and unexpectedly of Alexander Knox, playing one of those harrowed, abrasive, obdurate figures on the other side of some internment or imprisonment that made me think he would have been anachronistically great as E. T. C. Werner. Have some link-like things.

1. John Heffernan falls into the category of actors of whom I have somehow become very fond without actually seeing all that much of them, which normally happens with character faces in the '40's. I am unlikely even to see his latest project, the freshly announced Amazon TV version of Tomb Raider, but since his character is described in the promotional dramatis personae as "an exhausted government official who finds himself tangled up in Lara's unusual world," it's nice to know I would almost certainly develop a disproportionate attachment to him if I had the chance. You can tell I am otherwise a solid generation of actors behind the times since I was impressed by the casting all in the same place of Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, Celia Imrie, Paterson Joseph, and Sigourney Weaver.

2. This song transfixed me a few nights ago on WHRB: Barbez, "Strange" (2005).

3. I meant once again to praise the Malden Public Library for ordering me a sun-bleached, peach-orange, jacketless first edition of Leslie Howard's Trivial Fond Records (ed. Ronald Howard, 1982), about whose selected nonfiction I have been intensely curious since discovering its existence in 2008, but the problem with reading some of the broadcasts he made for J. B. Priestley's Britain Speaks in 1940 is that one runs into passages like:

Democracy today, to survive at all, must be as militant as autocracy, and what the world is desperately in need of now is not the gentle, philosophic democracy of Jefferson, but the outspoken, militant and ringing democracy of Roosevelt, representing the righteous anger of the free people of the world aroused against the cynical arrogance of the totalitarian feudalists.

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 8

  • As usual (and as I hoped for), [community profile] fandomtrees has a one-week delay, so now I have a much better chance of finishing more than one thing, heh. Here is the latest admin post with the trees that still need gifts.

  • Also, [personal profile] candyheartsex sign-ups have closed, and three more people in my fandoms signed up after I had already gone to bed! Can't wait to find out what my actual assignment will be.

Today's writing

I worked a little on one [community profile] fandomtrees treat, started planning another, and did some brainstorming for [personal profile] candyheartsex. It's still all slower going than I'd like, but I'm feeling much better, so there's that.
