I saw a few people on dreamwidth doing a scrapbook type thing, and it made me remember doing one ages ago so I'm going to follow that format. I figured I should start mine now before I forget exactly what I watched... if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to drop a comment.

OTW Board Meeting, January 18, 2026

The OTW Board will be holding its next public meeting from 0:00 Midnight to 1am UTC on January 18th (what time is that for me?).

This meeting will be held in the Board Discord server. The server will have a team of moderators and a set of rules, including question rules, and community guidelines. The server is open even after the meeting, but the channels for meeting and asking questions will be read-only. The Board will post replies to questions that do not get addressed during the scheduled meeting two weeks after the meeting in the server’s #questions-answers channel.

The agenda will include:

  • Decisions made since the last public board meeting
  • Board annual roadmap for 2026
  • Organisational culture roadmap update
  • Any other business (Questions & Answers)

Prior to this meeting, there is an opportunity to ask questions in advance to be answered as part of the meeting. This allows anyone who wishes to ask the Board questions, whether they will be able to attend the meeting live or not. (The Board will also accept questions during the meeting.)

Questions submitted to this Google Form will be accepted up to three days before the meeting begins or until 50 questions have been submitted. At that point, the form will be turned off. You need to be logged in to a Google account to submit a question. In the future, these rules may be amended to adjust as needed. Further information will be available in the OTW Board Discord server.

Photograph of a young Asian girl using a manual typewriter in an office and looking very serious as she stares straight into the camera. Her black hair is slicked into a low ponytail and her round glasses are so big they extend past her face. She's wearing a shirt and tie and an adult-sized yellow blazer that fits her like a dress, almost as if she has been shrunk. Text, in a typewriter font: Crack Treated Seriously, at Fancake.
[community profile] fancake's first theme of the year is Crack Treated Seriously! We've already got recs in The Magnus Archives, Disco Elysium/Death Note, Our Flag Means Death, Bungou Stray Dogs, and Star Wars.

Over at the comm, [personal profile] full_metal_ox gave us a delightful glimpse at the character in the banner, writing:
The model has the distinct air of a little kid whose obsessions are the War of 1812 and raccoons, settling in to compose her Magnum Opus alternate history: what if the War of 1812 had been fought by raccoons?

(The history and biology will draw upon rigorous research—including thick ponderous tomes from the Grownup Section, interviews with real live zoologists and re-enactors, and get thee behind me, ChatGPT, thou Devil's Easy Button!—with the result that the text will be as footnote-riddled as Discworld. Writing is Serious Business, for which she dons her Official Serious Writing Jacket—and what other color could it be? Yellow is the hue of intellect, as well as yet another of her Special Interests.)

If you have any questions about this theme, or the comm, come talk to me!

The woman who lived in this apartment before me 'donated' a very ugly Christmas table centerpiece. It lives in a credenza a long with other holiday decorations. Every holiday usually Bonny and/or Joan dig into the cabinet and sprinkle around whatever crap they find in there. I have now lived with this ugly Christmas centerpiece for three years and it was time to put me out of my misery.

So this morning, before anyone was up, I quietly moved it from the credenza to the dumpster. Next year, those who are still alive might say 'wonder what happened to whatsername's centerpiece?' or not. But at least I won't have to look at it for six weeks.

I have a load of laundry going and have done a bit more organizing/decluttering. I want to go snap a BEFORE of the storage area. I found the label maker!! Now, I cannot remember what I wanted to label. ARUGH. But at least I'm ready if the memory comes back.

I really like Apple Weather's information display — it doesn't speak of "records" but the normal variation of the variable at hand.

Temperature graph showing the normal range of temperatures, and todays temperature being below that.

For example, the temperature graph above shows the current conditions are lower than the expected temperatures for today. I can testify it is cold out there — and the information is presented in such a way to be actionable. Aka, its colder than you probably are expecting.

This author has a deft grasp of Wodehousian pastiche, a keen eye for when it's time to add OCs, and a dashed lot of humor to put into a story whose premise seems bleak. I enjoyed the twists and turns of this epic tale no end.

Et in Arcadia ego

Read Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, which I've always vaguely intended to get around to reading and finally decided it was time, for obvious reasons, at the end of November, although clearly other people had the same idea, so it was on hold until now. Split between the early 1800s and the "present day" (circa 1993) at the same Derbyshire country manor, it's all tennis-volley wit and sly double meanings and then the narrative pieces start to click together and I was like, ah, this is a play about the way the past can be reconstructed, or misconstrued, from its surviving details - ... ) - and it is about that, but also, ultimately, it is an extremely compelling play about math. I love Stoppard's stage directions, which have such an eye for detail, sometimes ones that the audience won't even see (e.g., describing the inside of a book that there's really no practical way for an audience to see), and/or somehow both specific and open-ended that it's evocative of a given vibe that, as a reader, I can picture so clearly—
Gus doesn't speak. He never speaks. Perhaps he cannot speak. He has no composure, and faced with a stranger, he caves in and leaves again. A moment later the other door opens again and Valentine crosses the room, not exactly ignoring Bernard and yet ignoring him.

Books of 2025

How many?
128, including comics and manga. Biggest year in over a decade.

I did a lot of buddy reading this year, with [personal profile] osprey_archer and [personal profile] tullycat (separately), as well as a non-fandom friend who wanted to get back into reading.

2024 - 105
2023 - 84
2022 - 85
2021 - 60

How many not by men?
66

Most books by a single author?
13 by Joan Aiken - [personal profile] osprey_archer and I did a read through her Wolves of Willoughby Chase series and it was wonderful.

Longest and shortest?
Shortest was The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard - plays are short!

Longest was Dune by Frank Herbert which was simply too long.

Favourite?
Butter by Asako Yuzuki really stuck with me for how it explored food, murder, and feminism.

The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jiminez was amazing, an epic fantasy that feels arrestingly original.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a classic for a reason, who would have thunk it.

The Wall by Marlen Haushofer, from the 1960s, I feel this should be way more widely known as a work of feminist speculative fiction.

I liked all the Joan Aiken reads to varying degrees, but special mention to The Stolen Lake which is an absolutely bonkers take on Arthurian legend and alternate history, starring Dido Twite my favourite girl in the world.

Favourite re-reads:
Heaven Official's Blessing by MXTX

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

Honourable mentions:
Don't Bite The Sun and Drinking Sapphire Wine by Tanith Lee, which were very funny and scarily prescient about the devaluation of art.

The Racket by Conor Niland is an excellent tennis memoir from a journeyman player.

Your Utopia by Bora Chung is a great collection of science fiction short stories.

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou, about Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scam, made me despair of humanity - but was so entertainingly written!

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures was a lot of fun.

Least favourite?
The Season by Helen Garner - sorry it was not good as a sports book or a memoir.

Oldest?
King John by Shakespeare, which I also saw staged as a read-through by Bell Shakespeare.

Newest?
I don't usually read a lot of new releases but this year was an exception. Emperor of Gladness, Cactus Pear for My Beloved and Chinese Parents Don't Say I Love You were all released around the same time. Oh and Kings of This World by Elizabeth Knox.

Any in translation?
Tons! Mostly Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

Another bridge closed

Covered bridges may be charming, but they’re outdated and impractical. Built for light, slow traffic, they can’t handle modern vehicle loads or safety standards. Their timber frames rot, deteriorate, and demand constant costly repairs. Their value no longer lies in preserving them, though this doesn’t ignore their place in our history. We should celebrate them while moving on.

Welcome to Sunday! I can't believe the weekend is already on the downslope. I did nothing yesterday. Watched a couple of episodes of Great British Bake Off, which was very soothing.

We're all still sick. We cough like we're a classic car trying to start, we never have tissues very far away. I do not appreciate it at all.

I plan today to do more of the same. I'd planned to sleep in, but Boodle put an end to that dream with her sharp little patting paws. I'm so glad I trimmed her claws last weekend. The rest of the day will be relaxing, watching Bake Off, maybe comfort watching something, I don't know what. Part of me is thinking Captian America: The Winter Soldier, part is thinking maybe LOTR or the Losers.

With nothing much to focus on, and no actual ability to focus, I've been perusing Cruisetok and cruises on youtube. It's been good. I've been rewatching videos of people's Alaska cruises on the Koningsdam, which is out ship. It's given me a pretty good feel for where things are, as has looking at the floorplan of the Koningsdam.

My ADHD is pleased by this. I want to know where everything is, so that I can lead my family to the various venues, like a little shepherd, until they know were they're going. My favorite is Nothern Viking Explorers videos. They did a nice story on the Koningsdam from the 2024 cruise season. There hasn't been any really comprehensive videos for 2025. Maybe I'll make one for 2026, who knows. I plan to at the very least document what it's like staying in the Pinnacle Suite for people. There's a lack of that, unfortunately, which is sad, because I'd like to know.

I am annoyed that I have nothing left to plan. We've got all our excursions, the trip is fully paid off, the pre and post cruise hotels are booked and the car services have been booked and paid for. Beyond that, there's nothing I can do. I like planning things, so this is also sad.

I got a couple of dresses to try out for the vow renewal. I think I've picked it out, though there is one dress still to come (well, 2, but the second, I didn't realize had a strappy back, so that will not work with a bra (and I need a bra.) The one I'm waiting on is a gorgeous blue dress from ThredUp.

The one I really like is a black wrap neck dress that's shot through with sparkly colored threads. It doesn't look like much on the manequin, but on a person it actually looks really nice.

The blue dress I think is supposed to come this week. Which excites me. I love getting packages. If I have energy today, I'll try on the other two dresses and see which one I like better. Of course, if I have energy, I'll dye my hair. I got a new violet color that I really think will suit me. I'll play it by ear.

Okay, time for me to wrap up and maybe think about eating something. Everyone have a stupendous Sunday!

Stalag to Stalag

This excerpt is from my grandfather’s diary on the forced march he was on from stalag VIIIA and the day he refound freedom. The “A” is the Americans, and a few months later he was in his hometown getting married, returning to civilian life.

April 3–Announced at 10:00 by one of the 7 who stopped some people the A had passed us started marching & met A. Marched to town arrived at 12.

spent all day eating and smoking, boy it feels great to be free. Drove to Zegenhaim and lodged in a house, room with two J. A. Now they are playing the guitar and violin great had coffee. It is now 22:00 hr. and we have a bottle of whisky on the table boy oh boy.

Apr 6 Still in commandered house living like a king. Plenty of food, cigs, etc.

My understanding is he never spoke about his service, and the diary was found after his widowmaker heart attack in early 1970. The diary is terse, but has enough details to map out his path from Stalag ViiiA to Zegenhain—a good winter project.

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I've had many cats over the years. We lost our two old boy cats in mid-2024 and early 2025, both very nearly making it to seventeen years old. That left us with our two girl cats, plus the dog - more about him in a moment - and the house just felt wrong and too empty. So last July we got a new boy kitten, who is gorgeous and confident and full of mischief. I'll start with him:
