Television, Television

Well, we're finished the Painting the Baseboards adventure, are midway through the Moving Everything Off the Second Floor adventure and ready to start the Have the Hardwood Floors Installed on Said Second Floor adventure starting on Monday. As a result, I've mostly been MIA on LJ. But I do have a few brief TV related musings.

First off, we finally finished season 1 of Veronica Mars. Just in time for season 2 to finally show on Canadian TV. (And I'm really trying hard not to stress about the fact that we've already got 4 eps of it built up on the PVR. I have a feeling we're going to resort to buying the box set of season 2 almost as soon as it's out.) I love Veronica Mars, and think it's one of the smartest shows out there, but did anyone else think it was a piece of lazy-assed writing to have Aaron Echolls pop up in Veronica's back seat in the last episode? I'm mean, two minutes before it happened, the Sweetie and I looked at each other and had the "oh, Christ, Aaron's going to be in the back seat, isn't he?" "But no, they wouldn't be that lame" "Oh no, they're going to be exactly that lame" conversation. Apart from that, I adored the first season whole-heartedly. I even thought the revelation that Aaron was the murderer was completely set up and yet not something I called.

Second, I have officially given up on The Chief. I've had 17 episodes of it sitting on the PVR since at least the spring, and not even the gorgeousness of Martin Shaw (and he is bloody gorgeous in it) can make me watch the damn thing. On the purely technical side, I can't handle the cheap-assed, shot on video, poorly lit, crappily composed quality of the whole thing. On the narrative side, I want to shake the writers and tell them that having people argue about the police budget for the five millionth time does not scintillating drama make. And while Martin is clearly out-acting most of the cast, the directors have a remarkable tendency to shoot the back of his head (no, really, I'd prefer to see his face, thank you) and even he has occasional lapses where he's trying too hard to sell the drama of a scene. So, I'm going to burn through those eps as fast as I can and I'm not going to bother copying them any more. 'Cause really, the chances of my ever watching 'em again is slim to none, and slim just left town.

On the other hand, I've decided I utterly adore Judge John Deed. Yet again we have a gorgeous, if older, Martin Shaw, which is always a plus. And I have somehow managed to turn off the part of my brain that knows something about the law when watching it, so I no longer need to clutch my head in pain when Deed does something particularly bone-headed, illegal or improper. I have also managed to stop taking offense whenever Deed sleeps with yet another woman who's crossed his path, though I haven't stopped yelling at Jo to keep away from him when tries yet again to win her back. I'm also shocked that I've developed an amused affection for George. I'll be holding back the final 4 episodes I've got left on the PVR as a reward for when I manage to get through a few of those bloody Chief episodes.

I may be disappearing entirely for a week or two. On top of the house stuff, I'm about to try upgrading my computer. New hard drives (320 GB!), new OS (Tiger!), new software (Final Cut HD!), all of which is probably going to entail new memory and a new graphics card, though that remains to be seen. If it all goes south, it may take me a bit to get it all sorted. So, send your good computer thoughts my way.

Not even the fact that ALAN CADE and JOHN DEED "both" wear braces can tempt you to keep for another view another time?

I can't really speak as I know I will never watch Rhodes again. Maybe because the character would not appreciate being ravished by a red blooded woman.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The braces are a definite plus in TC, but the rest of it...

As for Rhodes, I couldn't make it through it the first time. Though being an avowed slash fan, the fact that he wouldn't appreciate being ravished by a woman scores as a plus rather than a minus. But, jeez, it was dulll. Rather like The Chief, now that I think of it.

[identity profile] shaw012145.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I confess that it took me 2 years to watch the last episode of RHODES as I knew he died. Not as if his death was from injuries sustained by being mauled by a Lion or something - knew it was because of his ongoing ill-health. It just took me that long to pluck up the courage to watch Martin die. Of course now I know how stupid I was.

He has died before - Mr White in OILMAN (Nightmares Video) and Captain Scott in LAST PLACE ON EARTH - but that was different.

The graveside scene in Rhodes was brilliantly acted that I can admit to.

Don't know if any writer has drawn from that scene.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I actually just got hold of the DVD of The Last Place on Earth, but I hadn't even considered that I've never seen him die on screen. Hmmm.

Of course, I did see him die on stage, in A Man for All Seasons.

[identity profile] shaw012145.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Theatre - thanks for the reminder - I saw him in ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT - twice. 4 rows from the back and 4 rows from the front. The latter was much better .

Wish they would bring out Plays on DVD after a period of time.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
We saw A Man for All Seasons twice as well, 5th row, dead centre both times. Very nice seats.

It would be nice to have a video version of plays, but would never be a substitute for the live theatre experience. But then, I'm a theatre snob. *g*

[identity profile] shaw012145.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely prefer live theatre, but not everyone can travel overseas to where the action is, so this would be better than nothing. Wish he would come back to my part of Australia again.

I bought the first season of Judge John Deed. I will buy every season. I am that show's lackey.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I also am a proud owner of the first season, and will be buying them all as they come out.

I'd have to have a gun to my head to buy The Chief, though. And even then, I might take the bullet. ;)

[identity profile] empty-mirrors.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen The Chief, but I completely concur on the Judge. Brilliant character, totally brilliant. So wonderfully flawed and idealistic and stupid and well-meaning and fucked up.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that pretty much sums up Deed. And hey, I've always liked my characters with flaws, so he definitely fits the bill.

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
With you on JJD. He's great in that.

I've only seen a couple of TC, so it's hard to comment, but from what I did see, you most definitely have a point.

Hope the house and computer stuff goes well.

Take care of you.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I liked Cade better when I just knew him from fanfic. But at least Deed is fun.

Thanks for the house/computer wishes. I'm going to start the upgrade this afternoon. With copious backing up of my original drives.

[identity profile] gilda-elise.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only watched a few episodes of Deed and none of the Chief, though I do have the show, and found I'm not crazy about the change in his speech. Makes me wonder if it's affected now or then. But I liked For the Greater Good, where his speech patterns were somewhere in the middle. But I try not to get too involved with any of the other characters either played because, well, they really can't hold a candle to Bodie and Doyle, now can they? ;-)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Since his original accent was Brummy, he's definitely affecting a posher accent these days. I like his voice as Doyle better, but I don't dislike his voice now.

I really have to watch For the Greater Good some time, though. I've had a tape of it for ages, but never seem to get around to watching it.

You're absolutely right that none of either Lewis or Martin's other characters are a patch on Bodie and Doyle.

[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I so want to give him the benefit of the doubt about the accent - he changed it on purpose originally, but I know my accent totally depends on who I'm hanging around with, so if he's with all those posh actor-y types... *g* My mum's got posher over the years too, somehow just naturally, cos she doesn't hang out with anyone like that (weird...)!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm totally willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on the accent. Especially since I sometimes put on a posh accent strictly for amusement value.

I also pick up the accent of whoever I'm hanging out with. Unfortunately, even 13 years later, I still haven't entirely shaken the Wisconsin accent I picked up in 2 years of grad school. (Oh, those crazy MidWest vowels.)

Sending you lots and lots of good computer thoughts!

So nice to hear your thoughts on TC and JJD. I can't comment on TC since I haven't seen it, but I absolutely love JJD - with all of his flaws and however much you want to smack him up, he's just so charmismatic and sexy and wonderful... and there's always that thing lurking in the back of your mind that finding the right *man* will turn it all around for him... okay. Back to the nursery for me!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I do frequently want to smack Deed, but I do quite love the character. To me, he's more a grown up Ray Doyle than Alan Cade. In the 6 or so episodes of The Chief I've seen, Cade comes off as rather bloodless, but Deed has the same fire as Doyle. It may be a little more banked, but it can definitely flare.

Sending good nursery thoughts your way. Your Lewis looks like a charmer.

[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've only seen the first Chief ep so far, but I'm still curious to see the rest! And there's A&E I've not watched too, so I'll be curious to see how he is there. I think my favourite not-Doyle character has to be Don DeMarco though... Also, I think I secretly, deeply recognize that JJD and George suit each other perfectly. Jo needs to stop being such a wimp - to everyone! not just JJD!

Sending good computer-y and good house-y thoughts your way...

Couldn't resist using the icon...

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've got the first season of A&E kicking around on tape. I've seen a few eps, and it's okay, but I had to stop watching it when I hit an episode where an older patient was suffering from the same kind of pneumonia that nearly killed my dad when I was 14 and it kind of made me freak out. Martin's character is good, though.

I'm totally with you on Don DeMarco. That's also the look where I think he's most gorgeous as well. I'm a sucker for men with beards (I married one of 'em) and I've always loved salt and pepper hair.

I also really like his Dalgliesh. A lot. I've gone back and watched The Murder Room a number of times. His interaction with the two detectives under him is very cute.

As for JJD and George, yep, I think I'm with you. I just watched an ep where George arrives to announce she's marrying her politico boyfriend, and five seconds later she's shagging Deed. They were so cheeky about it, that I didn't mind at all. And yeah, Jo needs to move away and develop a backbone. I still like her, though.

love the icon...awww

Uh. I'm not seeing SGA on that list. Atlantis, I think we have a problem.

We'll go back to our SGA watching ways when Space starts showing season 2. (Our player doesn't like the DVD Chris burned. Stoopid player.)

Uhm. With all those adventures, you may need to stay home for some quiet time in the future. *thinks about what comes next* Forget I said that.

Haven't seen either Chief or Deed, but if they're shooting the back of somebody's head to be artistic, they ought to be returned to their 101 courses for some remedial work.

On the computer thingee: backup backup backup.

I may need a 12 step group. I now own 60 zines and just bought 10 more.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
We're really hoping that the house will be done in the next couple of weeks, giving us a little bit of time to relax before that "what comes next" thing happens. Fingers crosed.

I don't think they shot the back of Martin's head to be artistic. I think they were shooting on a shoestring and didn't want to do coverage to get his reaction shots. It's just *that* dodgy a show.

Am doing a couple of back up of all major bits.

As for zines, you have in a very short time acquired as many Pros zines as I have. When you get those extra 10, you'll have surpassed me. (Not counting the ones I've printed off myself, of course.) Congrats! We'll have to trade lists and compare recs.

That's an amazing reason. Surprised it made it onto DVD with stuff like that. I suppose you're watching merely for plot, then, right? *g*

It's that 'amazingly fast reader' part I can't seem to shake. Must. Have. New. Stuff. To. Read.
Oh, I read Harlequin Airs yesterday. You're right. It's fabulous. I now regret not buying it at MWest when you saw it.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The Chief is not, fortunately, on DVD. One of the Canadian digital channels shows it, so I'm trying to burn off the eps I've got stuck on the PVR before Don goes and deletes 'em on me. (If it comes down to Veronica Mars or The Chief, I know what he's going to get rid of, and it ain't Veronica.)

Deed is on DVD, and a much better show.

You must be a fast reader. I'm pretty fast, but I just don't have nearly enough time to read everything I'd like to any more. (The second floor is ready for the floor guys, though, and it's not even midnight. Yay!)

As for Harlequin Airs, I'm not going to say it.

Oh, wait, yes I am. I TOLD you so.

Okay, that's enough smugness from me.

(BTW, In my experience, if you love Harlequin Airs, you'll hate Master of the Revels, just in case you're deciding whether to buy that one. It's a AU based on a dodgy SF musical that Martin made post-Pros and I find it worse than tedious. On the other hand, the zine has lovely Lovett illustrations, which provide the only reason that I have not long ago sold my copy of the zine.)

[identity profile] faramir-boromir.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
This is that scary moment where I admit that I should simply buy what you tell me and stop trying to figure it out on my own. I hate AUs, yet I really enjoyed HAirs.
And yes, go ahead and say it! You deserve the smug.

There is a zine listed on eBay for $50. I kid you not. Angel in the Dark.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Do not doubt the all-knowing, all-seeing Zed. *g*

I love Angel in the Dark, but it is very, very, very, very dark. No, really, did I mention it's dark? I also think the writer has a few copies left (I got it directly from her after reading a chunk of it from a Escapade lending library copy during the con) but she takes *forever* to answer emails. If she ever does.

[identity profile] faramir-boromir.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Dark I can handle. Even death-fic, so long as it is well-written. I take it that you didn't pay $50 for this from the author. Have her email addy around someplace? I nearly lost my eyebrows in my hairline when I saw the $50 pricetag (that's the starting bid price).

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's deathfic all right. Of the most gutting kind. But I still love it.

I've got her email kicking around somewhere at home, so I'll take a look for it tonight. And no, I did *not* pay 50 bucks. Sheesh.

[identity profile] faramir-boromir.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Good grief. Somebody actually bid! $50 plus shipping. *looks like stunned mullet*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Good grief, indeed. I'd never pay that for a zine. Heck, I wouldn't pay that for most pro-published novels.

I've still got to get that email addy for you too. (Why do I never remember that when I'm at home?)
