Television, Television
Well, we're finished the Painting the Baseboards adventure, are midway through the Moving Everything Off the Second Floor adventure and ready to start the Have the Hardwood Floors Installed on Said Second Floor adventure starting on Monday. As a result, I've mostly been MIA on LJ. But I do have a few brief TV related musings.
First off, we finally finished season 1 of Veronica Mars. Just in time for season 2 to finally show on Canadian TV. (And I'm really trying hard not to stress about the fact that we've already got 4 eps of it built up on the PVR. I have a feeling we're going to resort to buying the box set of season 2 almost as soon as it's out.) I love Veronica Mars, and think it's one of the smartest shows out there, but did anyone else think it was a piece of lazy-assed writing to have Aaron Echolls pop up in Veronica's back seat in the last episode? I'm mean, two minutes before it happened, the Sweetie and I looked at each other and had the "oh, Christ, Aaron's going to be in the back seat, isn't he?" "But no, they wouldn't be that lame" "Oh no, they're going to be exactly that lame" conversation. Apart from that, I adored the first season whole-heartedly. I even thought the revelation that Aaron was the murderer was completely set up and yet not something I called.
Second, I have officially given up on The Chief. I've had 17 episodes of it sitting on the PVR since at least the spring, and not even the gorgeousness of Martin Shaw (and he is bloody gorgeous in it) can make me watch the damn thing. On the purely technical side, I can't handle the cheap-assed, shot on video, poorly lit, crappily composed quality of the whole thing. On the narrative side, I want to shake the writers and tell them that having people argue about the police budget for the five millionth time does not scintillating drama make. And while Martin is clearly out-acting most of the cast, the directors have a remarkable tendency to shoot the back of his head (no, really, I'd prefer to see his face, thank you) and even he has occasional lapses where he's trying too hard to sell the drama of a scene. So, I'm going to burn through those eps as fast as I can and I'm not going to bother copying them any more. 'Cause really, the chances of my ever watching 'em again is slim to none, and slim just left town.
On the other hand, I've decided I utterly adore Judge John Deed. Yet again we have a gorgeous, if older, Martin Shaw, which is always a plus. And I have somehow managed to turn off the part of my brain that knows something about the law when watching it, so I no longer need to clutch my head in pain when Deed does something particularly bone-headed, illegal or improper. I have also managed to stop taking offense whenever Deed sleeps with yet another woman who's crossed his path, though I haven't stopped yelling at Jo to keep away from him when tries yet again to win her back. I'm also shocked that I've developed an amused affection for George. I'll be holding back the final 4 episodes I've got left on the PVR as a reward for when I manage to get through a few of those bloody Chief episodes.
I may be disappearing entirely for a week or two. On top of the house stuff, I'm about to try upgrading my computer. New hard drives (320 GB!), new OS (Tiger!), new software (Final Cut HD!), all of which is probably going to entail new memory and a new graphics card, though that remains to be seen. If it all goes south, it may take me a bit to get it all sorted. So, send your good computer thoughts my way.

I can't really speak as I know I will never watch Rhodes again. Maybe because the character would not appreciate being ravished by a red blooded woman.

As for Rhodes, I couldn't make it through it the first time. Though being an avowed slash fan, the fact that he wouldn't appreciate being ravished by a woman scores as a plus rather than a minus. But, jeez, it was dulll. Rather like The Chief, now that I think of it.

He has died before - Mr White in OILMAN (Nightmares Video) and Captain Scott in LAST PLACE ON EARTH - but that was different.
The graveside scene in Rhodes was brilliantly acted that I can admit to.
Don't know if any writer has drawn from that scene.

Of course, I did see him die on stage, in A Man for All Seasons.

Wish they would bring out Plays on DVD after a period of time.

It would be nice to have a video version of plays, but would never be a substitute for the live theatre experience. But then, I'm a theatre snob. *g*

I'd have to have a gun to my head to buy The Chief, though. And even then, I might take the bullet. ;)

I've only seen a couple of TC, so it's hard to comment, but from what I did see, you most definitely have a point.
Hope the house and computer stuff goes well.
Take care of you.

Thanks for the house/computer wishes. I'm going to start the upgrade this afternoon. With copious backing up of my original drives.

I really have to watch For the Greater Good some time, though. I've had a tape of it for ages, but never seem to get around to watching it.
You're absolutely right that none of either Lewis or Martin's other characters are a patch on Bodie and Doyle.

I also pick up the accent of whoever I'm hanging out with. Unfortunately, even 13 years later, I still haven't entirely shaken the Wisconsin accent I picked up in 2 years of grad school. (Oh, those crazy MidWest vowels.)

So nice to hear your thoughts on TC and JJD. I can't comment on TC since I haven't seen it, but I absolutely love JJD - with all of his flaws and however much you want to smack him up, he's just so charmismatic and sexy and wonderful... and there's always that thing lurking in the back of your mind that finding the right *man* will turn it all around for him... okay. Back to the nursery for me!

Sending good nursery thoughts your way. Your Lewis looks like a charmer.

Couldn't resist using the icon...

I'm totally with you on Don DeMarco. That's also the look where I think he's most gorgeous as well. I'm a sucker for men with beards (I married one of 'em) and I've always loved salt and pepper hair.
I also really like his Dalgliesh. A lot. I've gone back and watched The Murder Room a number of times. His interaction with the two detectives under him is very cute.
As for JJD and George, yep, I think I'm with you. I just watched an ep where George arrives to announce she's marrying her politico boyfriend, and five seconds later she's shagging Deed. They were so cheeky about it, that I didn't mind at all. And yeah, Jo needs to move away and develop a backbone. I still like her, though.
love the icon...awww

Haven't seen either Chief or Deed, but if they're shooting the back of somebody's head to be artistic, they ought to be returned to their 101 courses for some remedial work.
On the computer thingee: backup backup backup.
I may need a 12 step group. I now own 60 zines and just bought 10 more.

I don't think they shot the back of Martin's head to be artistic. I think they were shooting on a shoestring and didn't want to do coverage to get his reaction shots. It's just *that* dodgy a show.
Am doing a couple of back up of all major bits.
As for zines, you have in a very short time acquired as many Pros zines as I have. When you get those extra 10, you'll have surpassed me. (Not counting the ones I've printed off myself, of course.) Congrats! We'll have to trade lists and compare recs.

That's an amazing reason. Surprised it made it onto DVD with stuff like that. I suppose you're watching merely for plot, then, right? *g*

It's that 'amazingly fast reader' part I can't seem to shake. Must. Have. New. Stuff. To. Read.
Oh, I read Harlequin Airs yesterday. You're right. It's fabulous. I now regret not buying it at MWest when you saw it.
no subject
Deed is on DVD, and a much better show.
You must be a fast reader. I'm pretty fast, but I just don't have nearly enough time to read everything I'd like to any more. (The second floor is ready for the floor guys, though, and it's not even midnight. Yay!)
As for Harlequin Airs, I'm not going to say it.
Oh, wait, yes I am. I TOLD you so.
Okay, that's enough smugness from me.
(BTW, In my experience, if you love Harlequin Airs, you'll hate Master of the Revels, just in case you're deciding whether to buy that one. It's a AU based on a dodgy SF musical that Martin made post-Pros and I find it worse than tedious. On the other hand, the zine has lovely Lovett illustrations, which provide the only reason that I have not long ago sold my copy of the zine.)
no subject
And yes, go ahead and say it! You deserve the smug.
There is a zine listed on eBay for $50. I kid you not. Angel in the Dark.
no subject
I love Angel in the Dark, but it is very, very, very, very dark. No, really, did I mention it's dark? I also think the writer has a few copies left (I got it directly from her after reading a chunk of it from a Escapade lending library copy during the con) but she takes *forever* to answer emails. If she ever does.

I've got her email kicking around somewhere at home, so I'll take a look for it tonight. And no, I did *not* pay 50 bucks. Sheesh.

I've still got to get that email addy for you too. (Why do I never remember that when I'm at home?)
