Adventures in Parenting

Since we adopted Rosalind, a mere year ago, I swear I've had more childhood illnesses than I had as a child. I've had, in approximately chronological order:
  • Stomach bug, the first
  • An ear infection
  • Pink eye
  • Hand, foot and mouth disease (No, not hoof and mouth disease. Really.)
  • Pink eye, again
  • Stomach bug, the second

Not to mention various and sundry stupid colds and sniffly noses.

This past week I've managed to add one more to the list: tonsillitis.

Which wasn't fun, and basically knocked me out for the better part of four days, but is a better outcome than it could have been. Both my doctor and I thought I'd managed to once again get mono. (I had it, very badly, fourteen years ago.) Since it's possible that would have taken me out for MediaWest at the end of the month, I'm glad that got ruled out.

Anyway, that's a long way of saying I haven't been on LJ (or online at all) much in the last week, and since I've now got a zine deadline that's way beyond the drop dead point, I likely won't be on much for the next little while either.

Hope everyone's well, and I'm looking forward to catching up on lots of fun stuff when I've got a bit more time and feel a bit less sick.

I'd wondered where you were! (Most especially when you didn't participate in my movie meme--that's not like you at all!) I'm so sorry you've been sick again. Cripes. It's times like this I'm thankful it's just me and the cats. Feel better, my dear. What zine are you contributing to?

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have felt like utter death most of the week. I occasionally would turn on my computer, pull up the old flist, and realize I didn't have the energy to read any of it. (Sad, no?)

I did see your movie meme, but Callisto had already gotten the only one I had the brain power for (Master & Commander, ahhh). There's a couple of others I know I should know, but cannot for the life of me figure out. (4, 5 and 11, FYI.)

Someday, I'll do my own version of the movie meme. When I'm feeling less like reheated death. :-/

No worries! I know how tough it can be when you're too wrung out to even =think=! You poor thing. Feel better. I'll be thinking of you.

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
BTW, congrats on the vid award! That's fab news. Clearly the award organizers know quality when they see it.

    [identity profile] ancastar.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much! I hope you know that means a lot coming from you. :-D

I've had some more good news on that front. Jess got back with me and shared that Take Me the Way I Am just got chosen for Con.TXT (I think that's the capitalization on that...). This makes me very happy. Outside of Close Quarters, my stuff has never been shown at a con before.

    I feel like a big kid. :-)

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to ask you about that. Well done! It's always fun to have stuff shown at a con. Well, at least when there's no technical problems. (Are you going to the con? The best thing is to be in a con room when your vid's shown.) And that vid is currently top of the Vids That Make P Happy list.

Jess emailed me last night to ask whether she could have Love's Not, as well as possibly the stupidest, and definitely the shortest, vid I've ever made, Pop a Boner. Which is nice. Though the Boner request made me chuckle.

    [identity profile] ancastar.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! She'd told me she had some Pros vids in mind already. I just didn't know which ones. Well done, you. Looks like I'm going to be in very good company.

I don't know if I'll actually be going to the con. I'm such a baby about going when I don't really know many people. Given my line of work, you wouldn't really think I'd be shy. But I am. :-)

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I can sympathize with the shy thing. I spent most of my life until late in university thinking I was shy, then realizing I mostly wasn't. But I still have bouts of shyness, especially when confronted with masses of people who know each other but don't know me.

The first couple of cons you go to are always tough. But once you've been to a few, you start meeting more and more people. Then they become big reunions of friends you only get to see once or twice a year and they're a blast.

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and the zine is still the WWW one. I was just getting going on the bloody story when the pestilence hit.

    [identity profile] msmoat.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Tonsillitis! Yuck. (Shall I mention my mother had to have her tonsils removed because of me? *g*) I'm very glad it's not mono, though, and you're safe to go for Media West.

The illnesses will eventually stop--and, boy, will you have a strong immune system by then. *g*

    Good luck with everything!

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
You may, ultimately, have done your mother a favour. *g* (I'm really wishing they'd ripped mine out when they took out my adenoids as a kid.)

I keep hoping every illness is the last. For a while, at least. I better have a bloody good immune system at the end of all this.

Good luck with all of your challenges. (I'd tell you to slow down with the Codas, but I hope eventually to go back and read them all.)

    [identity profile] callistosh65.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Feel better soon. You have had a rough year healthwise. I'm very glad your tonsils are okay. I had mine yanked out when I was three, so have no idea what dodgy tonsils feel like, but I'm sure it's horrible. Just take care and line up some feelgood fics to aid recovery.*g*

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a crazy year, healthwise, but it can't last forever, right? Right?!

I'm going to plug away at my WWW story and then retire with some B&D to make me feel better. The lads always make everything all right.

    [identity profile] heliophile-oxon.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds pretty grim. Tonsillitis is definitely not the most fun you can have in bed (there's reading fic, for a start!). Hope you feel better soon - and yes, your immune system will be cast-iron bomb-proof after that little lot!

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
It could have been worse. (Mono is definitely worse.) But yeah, this getting sick all the time is definitely getting old. I'm sure my doctor's sick of seeing my face so frequently, and I'm positive my boss is tired of having me call in with my voice gone weird yet again.

A cast-iron immune system would be lovely. I'd like to order one now, please. *g*

Rosalind does like to share :)

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know to be happy or irritated that she either seems to get over this stuff incredibly easily, or that she only carries it home and never gets it at all. Sigh.

    [identity profile] shaw012145.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
She needs her mummy's hugs. You are just going to have to ride this out :)

    [identity profile] sunray45.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Poor you. Just one thing after another. I thought it was a rule that Mothers aren't allowed to get sick, but that sure isn't working in your case. You'll have to get the teachers at the Nursery School to warn you if some of the kids there come down with something, then you can start wearing a mask. :)

Seriously, I do hope you are feeling better soon, and can catch up on all the goodies on LJ.

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The kids, Ros included, all have perpetually runny noses, so it's anyone's guess who's carrying what. I'm just gonna have to start taking some serious vitamins. Or live in a bubble for the next five years. *g*

    [identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, the Disease Vector Years. I remember them well. And not fondly. You have my sympathies!

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me it gets better. And soon. (Lying is perfectly okay.)

    [identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why yes, any time now, she said brightly; ;D

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! That makes it all better. ;)

    [identity profile] londonronnie.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
The joys of parenthood, eh? *g*

We're on the second round of child-borne illnesses here, as it's now our granddaughter who's bringing colds/stomach bugs/sticky eyes etc home from nursery...

    Hope you're feeling better soon.

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to be happy to get through round one. Round two with grandkids will probably take me out permanently.

At least I'm feeling better, though someone really needs to tell my tonsils they can stop looking like that.

    [identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry to hear you've been sick.

Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.

    *Hugs*

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I'm feeling better now, though still all froggy. I'm definitely getting irritated with this getting sick thing, though.

    *hugs back*

    [identity profile] kortirion.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I swear I've had more childhood illnesses than I had as a child...

Wait till she goes to primary school and comes home with nits! Or do you say 'cooties' - anyway ...head lice. I never ever had them when I was at school, or knew anybody who did - in fact I even had to get my child-minder (a veteran of such problems) to catch one so as to show me what they looked like! Presented to me on a piece of sticky tape, but fortunately very dead. *G*

After about the fourth time, (because of course, my kids always gave them to me as well!) I'd got over the horror and shame, and could march into the chemist and ask for nit-lotion out loud... oooo... even writing about them makes me itch!
The joys of parenthood strike again! ;)

    [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
We were steeling ourselves to deal with nits in China, but they didn't materialize there. It's only a matter of time before Rosalind brings them home from either daycare or school, though. Everyone we know with kids has had to deal with them at some point, some more than once.

Not looking forward to it, though. (I hate bugs. Like, a lot.)
