Sweet Charity Vid: A Pain That I'm Used To (Batman)

Lo, these many months ago, [livejournal.com profile] sarren successfully bid on me in the Sweet Charity auction and requested a Batman vid. Specifically, she asked for a vid highlighting the friendship between Batman and Jim Gordon.

Many months later, this is that vid.

Title: A Pain That I'm Used To
Fandom: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight
Length: 3:58
Summary: Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne embrace their inner bat.
Music: A Pain That I'm Used To by Depeche Mode
Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ancastar for taking a look, even though it's not her fandom.

The icon is just 'cos it's currently my only Bat icon. *g*

There are some really nice parallel edits and the way the scenes slow down to match the slow period in the middle of the song is just great.

It must have been bloody difficult to pull off too as the film is so dark, I don't mean content but the lighting in this case.

Thanks for letting the rest of us see it. ♥

Bat icon. ::headdesk:: I knew there was something I meant to do. (Look, I've got a proper Bat icon on the post now. You get the goofy SPN Batman icon. *g*)

Glad you enjoyed it. It was an agonizing one to pull off, and not just because the footage was so bloody dark. There's not a heck of a lot of Gordon in the films, and he's with Batman even less. Creating a relationship between them took some fancy footwork. At least I think I pulled it off.

It's good to see your icon is as serious as mine. *cough*

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:05 am (UTC)(link)

You did pull it off and it worked really well with an usual song. I think the rhythm of it would be difficult to edit to as well, yet you pulled it off.

I've actually been having a few dark thoughts about a SH vid being set to Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus but the telephone line, ah the telephone.

I'll see your one wacky icon, and raise you one

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Find the stress points in the bars to edit was a challenge, but once I'd figured it out, the song structure was pretty regular.

Personal Jesus for SH is an intriguing idea. Heck the telephone line's not that tough. If I could vid the "Transatlantic shopping spree" line in Cosy Prisons (and WTF does that even mean, man?) you can deal with the telephone line.

There's just something about the Holmes/Watson relationship that just makes me think of that song... erm.... Oh yeah, it's happy night at Chez Vixen. *g*

I know! I know! There are cheap weekend, sometimes just next day return flights to New York from major Western European airports that people take just to shop in New York. The dollar has traditionally been very week against the pound for instance and luxury goods just cost less anyway. A bunch of my cousins' mates went to NY last October to do their Christmas shopping.

Heck, I'm almost out of wacky

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Holmes/Watson and Personal Jesus....I think it's happy night at Chez Zed too! (You want me to take a crack at it?)

Thanks for solving the lyric mystery. I reckoned it must be something like that. Not that it would have helped me vid the damn line. (In the end I just ignored it and went with the internal story.)

I'm never out of whacky

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:35 am (UTC)(link)

I would LOVE you to take a crack at it. ♥

And that's why we luuuvvvv you

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I zipped off to the theatre to watch the movie again today, and want to vid it SO. DAMN. MUCH.

Shall give this a go. Be prepared for whinging and requests for a beta.

Re: And that's why we luuuvvvv you

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:43 am (UTC)(link)

I am brave. Bring on the whinging! *juts jaw in resolute style* *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
All righty then. (See icon.)

Wheeeee!

Oh, that made me happy.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Awwww. Thanks!

Fingers crossed this means I'll be able to get back into vidding again.

POOR Gary Oldman.

Supevillians, public humiliation, and some obsessive vigilante martial artist yahoo dressed up as GIANT MOTHERFUCKING BAT.

What's a cop to do?

You are AWESOME.

THANK YOU.

I'm sooooo glad it worked for you. In my darker hours, I didn't think I was ever going to get this to fly. As it were.

Hee!!! Two puns in one sentence.

I hope it was at least a bit fun for you? Sometimes?

Hee!!! Two puns in one sentence.

What can I say. I must have been punchy.

This was totally fun for me. It was a challenge, which is my kind of fun. Plus, you gave me back my Bat movie. I'd been reluctant to go back and watch Batman Begins because I loathe how Nolan shot the action scenes. But making the vid made me realize that, action scenes aside, I love, love, LOVE the character stuff going on in the film, and for that I can put up with crappy editing, and lousy choreography.

[identity profile] cynatnite.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
That vid killed. Gonna watch this over and over and over...

Thanks!

on edit: I noticed you're on S&H and we've got a few of the same friends. Can I friend you?

And absolutely, feel free to friend me. I shall friend you back.

Holy crap, this is AMAZING. Dang.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I wasn't sure I could pull it off, but I'm pleased with the results.

[identity profile] lsketch42.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed this. The mood of the song fit Batman really well and it was interesting to see Gordon's perspective. Great job!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. It was a challenge to work with Gordon's perspective, but I'm pleased that it worked.

Ooooh. I love the editing, and I can tell it's not an easy material to work with... and there were a few moments in the middle that really sent the shivers down my spine, especially the slowing down and then the Dark Knight Joker bit.

Also, this vid apparently did what I couldn't for the last week or so and worked through my writer's block and I can get back to writing Bruce/Gordon fic that really needs finishing. So, you know: THANKS. :)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome that the vid got you through your writer's block.

And yeah, the footage was a challenge. (This took literally months, off and on, to complete.) But I'm pleased that it seems to have worked. And it gave you shivers! Yay!

(Fab icon, BTW.)

I seriously admire the amount of work that must have gone into this. Months? Wow.

Also, just a heads-up that I'm reccing this. Because my flist is a Jim/Bruce crowd and they need to see this ;)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It probably would have only been weeks of work if I didn't have a three year old. *g* I don't vid nearly as quickly as I used to.

I'm very pleased you think this is worth a rec. Thanks!

[identity profile] callistosh65.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
This sounded intriguing, and it's *you*, so well, had to watch really, didn't I? Wow, that was well done. I wouldn't have thought there was enough material to create a convincing relationship over the stretch of a song, but you did it. And the song worked really well.

Take a bow Clever Vid Person!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit that when [livejournal.com profile] sarren first told me what she wanted, I really didn't think there was enough Gordon footage to pull this off. Fortunately there was. Barely. (I think I've got darn near every scene with Gordon in this one, with one or two exceptions.)

Bow taken.

And now the vidding bug is starting to hit hard again. Yay!

[identity profile] illariy.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Very fitting song choice and editing. Thank you for sharing this. :-)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting. *g*

[identity profile] ancastar.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, hon! Nice job. :-D

Some of the things that were challenges for you--lack of footage, POV--seem to have been alleviated. I don't know what exactly you did, but I like it! I felt like you somehow magically fond more Commissioner Gordon shots. Did you? Or did you just cut differently?

As before, I really liked how you used Gotham City and the bats to set the mood and to frame the action They worked well. I thought the parallels between Gordon's relationship with his son and the flashbacks with young Bruce were tighter too. All in all, wonderful work. I hope your bidder is well pleased.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

I haven't made significant changes since you last saw it, but I have tweaked a few things. Changed the order of a few shots, found better Bruce/Batman footage, tweaked a few of the Gordon bits. (I'd have loved to have found more Gordon footage, but it's just not there.) It helped just to leave it alone for a month and then come back with fresh eyes so I could rip out what wasn't working.

I'm much better pleased with it now, and my bidder seems very happy indeed.

I'm doing a Holmes vid now. Shhhh, don't tell anyone. *g*

[identity profile] bionic.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh that was awesome! Love this song, and it's such a great fit for BB and TDK. Lovely video!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. The song did seem to work for the source. I'm just happy I pulled it off.

[identity profile] tearful-eye.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh, that was very cool! i liked it a lot :)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. It was fun to work on. I'm pleased my bidder asked for it.

[identity profile] sooguy.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well done. I always love your work.

Wish I had your talent. Can't wait to see if you do take a run at Sherlock Holmes.

My account recently expired or I would have thrown my Batman WTF?! CHUM icon at you.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you enjoyed it. It was a tough one to crack.

As for Holmes, I've got 33 seconds of a vid done. Three more minutes of song, and it'll be finished.
