Thank Yous, and a London Question

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes on the job. I'll respond to everyone soon, I promise, but at the moment I have to make a birthday card for a party Ros is going to this afternoon, complete the assignment for an online course that's due while I'm in England and, ya know, pack.

This time tomorrow, I'll be jetlagged and in London!

And speaking of London, can anyone there tell me what sort of footwear I should be bringing? Would the big, furry, Canadian boots be overkill, or can I get away with a solid pair of walking shoes?

I don't live in London, but I'd recommend the solid pair of walking shoes. I don't think there is any snow there at the moment.

I'm not in London, but I'm less that an hour down the M4 and I'd say big furry boots would definitely be overkill. No snow at the moment, and temps well above freezing for now, although it is going to be very wet over the next few days.

As everyone's already pointed out, I'd say solid walking shoes. Yes, there's been a lot more snow in England than there usually is but it still doesn't compare with the sort of volume of snow you regularly see and no where near as cold.

I used to do this sort of thing all the time. ("Ian McKellan's doing Richard III? I'll be in London next week if you want me.") It's kind of fun to do it again in a small way. (I had to see my doctor yesterday for an emergency prescription refill, and when he found out where I was going, he actually punched me on the arm and gave me an attagirl kinda speech.)

Solid walking shoes it is. I just have to figure out which ones. (Clunky brown Docs, or black Mary Jane Docs? It's a puzzle. *g*)

Until almost all of my leave time -- I've only *just* been at my current job for long enough to qualify for three weeks -- started getting burned by my trips home to the family I used to love to take spontaneous trips too. *sigh*

So, as said, I'll just live vicariously. *g*

It will be cold and the Docs would probably cover more of your feet.

I was up to four weeks at the old job, but at least I'll be getting three at the new one. (They wouldn't go for four, though they did give me the salary I asked for. Rather quickly, so I probably could have negotiated them up another thousand or two. Oh well.)

The clunky Docs are no doubt more practical, but the Mary Janes are more fetching. *g* Still not sure which to go with.

I'm used to the sort of holiday leave my family in England get so it was a bit of a shock to get my first job in America outside of teaching and be told I'd only get 8 days leave the first year.

Well, fetching counts too as you are going to the theatre and if you're travelling light you probably don't want to take both pairs... Also, if it's one pair then the Mary Janes would probably be easier to manage in the airport where they keep making you take the bloody things off.

I've always been jealous of the amount of vacation European/Tranzac types tend to get. I wish North American employers were as enlightened in that regard. At least I didn't have to go back to two weeks. That's what I feared.

The Mary Janes aren't that open, and being black they go with more outfits, so I think I'm tending in their direction. It doesn't look like London's getting any more snow in the next week, just rain, so it should work out okay.
