Last Friday I failed in my bid to be a consumer when the Complete Sherlock Holmes Granada series was sold out. Tonight, I made up for that. (Though not, alas, with the Holmes box.)

We went to the One of a Kind Show, a regular monster show where various artisans sell their wares. The plan was to get a few summer dresses for Ros. I had no intention of getting anything for myself.

Then I found this jacket:

It's hard to tell from the picture, since it's black on black, but it's a very steampunk-like, Victorian styled jacket, with a bazillion buttons up the front, a mandarin collar, and black pleated lace at the wrists.

Oh, and a bustle at the back:

It was stupidly expensive, but also the sort of piece that I would have kicked myself for not buying. And now that I'm gainfully employed and have a bunch of severance leftover (most of which I'll be investing responsibly) I figured it was time to be a little indulgent.

(The Sweetie, on seeing all the unspeakably lovely clothes at the booth where I got it asked "Is this what the fashionably dressed Holmes fan is wearing this season?" And the bloke who ran it tried every one of there wonderfully wacky hats on me. His designer partner insisted that the hats were wearing me, instead of me wearing the hats--short people cannot carry off top hats, especially not with feathers--but it was still fun.)

What a fabulous jacket and hey, you could slip in to an episode of the WWW with that coat too. *g*

Are those playing cards on the front?

They are indeed playing cards. It definitely has a WWW feel to it as well. I lurv it. (I'm rather too fond of highly impractical clothes. I have a full-length brocade waistcoat that I really need to wear more often.)

I have a bunch of impractical gear lurking around in the back of my wardrobe but I rarely break it out any more. The odd shoes and strange jewellery tend to have regular outings though usually against a plain black background.

The jacket's not *that* impractical, you could wear it a lot of places. *nods decisively* Beautiful things should be seen. *g*

I've always managed a funky vibe to my clothes (I regularly wear stripey tights, for a start) but I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to bring out the seriously freaky clothes more often. Why else have them, after all.

That's the thing, you have to take them out for an airing. I have a bunch of dresses from the 40s and 50s that I hardly ever bother to wear any more.

Ooh! I love the detail in the back especially. Big fun! Sometimes you've got to splurge.

Did you buy anything for Ros?

It's completely awesome.

And yep, we got Ros a tunic and matching capris, a tie-dyed dress, and a skirt with Olivia on it. (Olivia is one of her current fave TV shows.)

I love Olivia! I bought Olivia books for the girls when they were younger. She's adorable.

Sounds like a good day was had by all the women in the Zed household.

I fell in love with her the first time she ran through her bedroom and there, on the wall, was a pinned-up poster of Eleanor Roosevelt. *g*

The Eleanor Roosevelt poster in Olivia's room is an awesome thing. As is the fact that the book she reads with her mom is a biography of Maria Callas.

My youngest friend has now reached the grand old age of 12. We've been "officially" friends since she announced clearly and *loudly* when she was four that we are very good friends and will remain very good friends and that this fact is in no way connected to the fact that I'm very good friends with her mother. *g* I think she instinctively recognized someone else who was an odd child and thought I'd make a decent guide... ah, the innocence of youth.

Oooh mini-ramble. Anyway, I bought her the Olivia Theatre several years back and we spent hours playing with it. I taught her how to impersonate Laurence Olivier doing Richard III... I still don't think her father has forgiven me.

Ros totally is Olivia, down to the negotiating for a million books every night.

The Zed women definitely made out well tonight. *g*

A bustle *and* playing cards on the front - it's wonderful!! And I have thing for very long sleeves too.. wear it with pride, me dear.

I'm going to totally have fun with this. The sleeves are particularly awesome. The lace just feels luscious on my wrists.

That's really neat! Congratulations for adding it to your wardrobe. Good note on which to start the weekend.

Oh, cool. Sometimes you just gotta have that "thing" you've got your eyeball on. I'm glad you went for it. It looks spiffy!

I do like getting unique pieces of clothing. This is one of my more fun purchases, I think.

The jacket looks fabulous on you. I am still envious of that other jacket you bought at the One of a Kind (must be 10 years ago now!).

Do they have dates for the Christmas show yet? Rebecca and I want to come to Toronto SANS kids to go to it and have a weekend alone.

The Sweetie stayed far away from the hats. (If he had tried 'em on, I would have pulled out the cellphone camera.)

I still have the other jacket. (10 years ago? Crikey, you're probably right.)
