Gratuitous Naked Male Cuteness

Work has been kind of nuts lately (lots of projects requiring lots of revisions all coming due at once) and home has been equally busy. But I decided to treat myself to a cheap copy of Wimbledon, a slight rom com with Paul Bettany, and Nicholaj Coster-Waldau (oh, and Kirsten Dunst) that I've been meaning to watch for ages.

It is lovely.

It's not deep, it doesn't have high drama, it follows the expected arc of a rom com. But it's chock full of good actors (James McAvoy, Bernard Hill, Eleanor Bron and Robert Lindsay have minor but key roles), the characters mostly behave like reasonable adults, and Bettany and Coster-Waldau play best friends and tennis practice partners with a nicely slashy vibe.

I thought it was a fun film when I saw it, lightweight but it knew what it was and just tried to do it well.

I'm really looking forward to Priest. I was laughing at talk of Bettany's priest/Urban's vampire slash before the film has even be released and then I noticed in a trailer Vic posted that Urban's vamp was a priest before and was obviously friends with Bettany's priest. Erm... Yeah. :D

It's not high art, but it's entirely enjoyable.

As for Priest, I just saw the latest trailer last night, and I'm approaching it with trepidation. Those vampire creatures look, well, just kinda dumb. But the Urban/Bettany slash potential should be enough to make an stupidity palatable.

I just want to know when Bettany decided he was going to specialize in low-ish budget, religion-laced action films. Not that I've got a problem with that. I'm far too fond of Legion.

We both know it's going to be silly as hell but I still think it'll be fun. I do enjoy the occasional work in the spandex-go-boom oeuvre.

I read an interview with him a while back where he was talking about the religion-laced films he's been in and laughing about it cos he's a confirmed atheist.

I love Wimbledon - fun, light, nicely-made film. And lots of Bettany goodness. *g*

Of course I'm looking forward to the Urban/Bettany slash too (well..duh), but you know that Bettany is doing his darndest to put us off the scent at the moment by snuggling with Zach Quinto at Sundance? Nice try Paul. Not gonna work.

Bettany goodness is always a good thing.

As for him snuggling up with Zach Quinto, god bless 'em. I love an actor who'll snuggle up to his co-stars. Especially when they're Karl Urban. ;-)

Accounts from Sundance suggets that PB is pleasingly handsy with his co-stars, so I'm hoping for goooooooood things when Priest's being promoted ;)

Coster-Waldau...was he the guy on that briefly shown show "Amsterdam?"

New Amsterdam, and yep, that was him. I loved that show, and was sorry, if not surprised, to see it go.

He's also got a key role in Game of Thrones. For which I'm totally subscribing to HBO Canada.

I'd say the movie was a guilty pleasure of mine but that would be unfair to it, I enjoyed it when it came out and I tend to watch it whenever it is one TV (and it always makes an appearance somewhere when Wimbledon itself is on). I love Paul Bettany (and he is damn cute) and the slash between him and his best friend is out there for everyone to see I reckon.

Definitely not a guilty pleasure. It's well made and fairly intelligent as these things go. And the "friendship" between him and Mr. Coster-Waldau's character makes it all that much more awesome.

I remember seeing that film when it came out at the cinema. I spent the latter parts of it, as I recall, trying not to yell 'that's not how you drive between those parts of London!' *g* But it was fun too.

Intimate knowledge of any place where filming is done is always distracting. I have the same problem with any episode of Flashpoint, where they zip all over Toronto, east to west and back in the middle, in no time at all.

Yes, I think the temptation on the part of the director is always to move from one easily identifiable famous landmark to another for the benefit of the general audience, whereas of course then tends to be the worst way to get quickly round anywhere! *g*
