Martial Arts Post 1.0

It's been a hectic time in the Zed/Sweetie/Ros household, and one of the many things keeping us busy is Ros doing Tae Kwan Do twice a week at a studio not far from our house. The studio is a really great space. The Kwan Jan Nim and a lot of the main black belt/teachers are women, and it's a remarkably nurturing place, considering they're also teaching everyone how to, you know, kick and punch people.

I've been wanting to go back into martial arts training for ages, and this seemed like a great place to do it in. So this week I signed up for a month's trial, and this morning I did my very first 6 a.m. class.

It was awesome.

It was also slightly nuts, owing to the fact that most of the other crazy people who decided to get up at an ungodly hour to train are black belts. Once upon a time I was a blue belt, and they're letting me wear that belt as a courtesy, but man, I am soooo not in that kind of shape any more. But if I keep this up, I have a feeling that I'm soon going to be.

To celebrate, I thought I'd post a pic of Ros and me at her first belt testing last month.

I have no desire to be a hockey mom, and while I'm pretty okay with being a soccer mom, I totally love being a martial arts mom. *g*

What a lovely picture and you both look dead chuffed, as you should. *g*

We were totally chuffed.

Of course, today I am in agony, but that shall pass. :-/

Awww such an adorable pic :)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, thanks!

(It's almost as adorable as your icon. *g*)

If Ros grins any harder the rest of her will disappear like a Cheshire cat!! Thanks for posting such a lovely pic!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
She loves her Tae Kwan Do classes. I, of course, could not be happier.

[identity profile] nevermind68.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
you looked so proud))))

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You might say that. ;-)

[identity profile] sunray45.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ros looks so proud of herself, and Mum is very proud of her Ros. Such a lovely photo. Thank you for sharing.

In my book you are slightly nuts. Getting up at that ungodly hour just to put your body through torture! But then that's just me, I am not a morning person. *g* You should be right though if you've already done it before.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's my current fave photo.

As for the class, I'm up at that time anyway, and I'm always too knackered to exercise at night, so it seemed like a good fit. So far, so good...

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, lovely pic!

Erm, did you say 6am?? I salute you :D Me, I'm a dance mom and very glad classes are after school...

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
There's something to be said for after school classes. (I thought I'd be a dance mom, but it turns out that Ros loved the idea of ballet more than the actual classes.)

I get up at 6 anyway, so I figured I might as well try that class. Of course, a 6 a.m. class means getting up at 5:30, but I'll try not to think of that. :-/

[identity profile] gina-stormgrant.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Great picture. You bot look so pleased.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fab, isn't it.

BTW, happy slightly early birthday!

[identity profile] gina-stormgrant.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Doing the family thing this weekend. Which reminds me... I need to go child-proof my house for the grandniece.

I'm off to Mexico for the month of Feb. We should get together when I get back.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck with the child proofing. I'm glad those days are behind me. Though now I'm just counting down the days until Ros learns how to read and gets into my zine collection.

Have fun in Mexico. Let me know when you're back.

What a gorgeous picture, and look at you - you're a matching pair of beamy smiles *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how smiley Ros is in that pic. It matched the smile she got the first time the instructor showed her how to throw a punch. ;-)

[identity profile] halotolerant.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I love how triumphant you both look! *g* The classes sound lovely - everyone I know who does a martial art seems to find it very positive and healthy.

Exercise at 6am is something you would have to not only pay me a LOT for but also probably supply Jason as an escort, but each to their own etc ♥

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I love martial arts. A lot. I was never in better shape than the year I was training 3 nights a week, and on my uni's varsity fencing team. Of course, my knees and back don't love it quite so much these days, so I'm just going to have to be careful not to overtrain. Fortunately, this studio is really good about getting you to listen to your own body's limitations.

I didn't start off as a morning person, but I seem to have ended up that way. Comes of having a kid who woke up at 6 a.m. every day for 2 years. She's still usually up by 6:30 on weekends, but at least we can set her up with TV and breakfast and catch a bit more sleep ourselves. Having Jason as an escort to class, or better yet, a sparring partner, would make it all more palatable. Yum. *g*

[identity profile] sc-fossil.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at you two! How adorable. Great for Ros. I know my kidlet loved martial arts when she was in school. It's good for mind and body.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a lot of fun seeing how much she enjoys it. Especially since it's something I love myself. I have a fond hope that we can be black belts together when she's older.

[identity profile] catalenamara.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
What a *wonderful* picture! It sounds like you're both having an absolutely wonderful time! 6 am, though... gotta hand it to you. :-)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
6 a.m. sounds mad, I know, but since I'm already up then, more or less...

Of course, we'll see how I feel in a couple of weeks.

[identity profile] norfolkdumpling.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, what a lovely picture! So glad you're both having fun with the Tae Kwan Do :)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ros and I are having fun. My back and knees are undecided. :-/ But yeah, it's a fab pic.

[identity profile] soundofthesurf.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwww! Two cuties! :)

Well done, you! It's great you enjoyed that class - that's the least you deserved for getting up that early! And as much as I like to see the two of you progressing with your belts - I'm also slightly scared now... ;D

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's currently my favourite pic ever!

I am ridiculously susceptible to exercise endorphins. I was pretty much high on them at work all day Thursday. This makes it rather easy to keep up an exercise regime once I find one I can fit in my schedule, even when that means 6 a.m. sessions.

[identity profile] soundofthesurf.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It is sooooo adorable - Ros looks so happy and you look sooooo proud!

But that's a good thing, it really is! I never ever have that and I hate that I don't - I wish exercise would make me happy, I really do! The best I can feel is totally happily tired but I only ever get that from swimming. It's a nice feeling though, too. ;)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The big guy doesn't get it either. He mostly thinks I'm insane. (His motto is "No pain, no pain." *g*)

[identity profile] soundofthesurf.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very much with the big guy then - the bit about the pain, not about you being insane, that is! How dare he think something like that?! *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I am a bit insane. But only in the best possible ways. *g*

[identity profile] soundofthesurf.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And he LOVES that, doesn't he?? *mega g*

We both love each other's insanity. It's what keeps us going. ;-)

[identity profile] soundofthesurf.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a crazy dream match made in heaven! <3

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-31 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Crazy might be nearer the mark. *g*

[identity profile] sooguy.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's awesome. I've been thinking of signing the kids up for something. Both of them want to try martial arts.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-01-31 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I totally recommend martial arts. Though I'd suggest vetting the instructors/school. When it comes to martial arts schools, there are some great places out there, and some scary ass ones.
