Adoption Day, 2012

Today we celebrated the five years since we adopted Ros. It's a total cliche, but it feels like the time has just flown by, but also like Ros has always been a part of our family.

We spent the morning and afternoon with one of the other families we travelled to China with, and considering we hadn't seen them since last year, it was extraordinary how well Ros and their daughter got on. There was no ten minute evaluation period like there is when she's sizing up other kids these days, they just hugged and started running around the house together, squealing.

The other dad is a fab photographer, and this is one of the pics he took today:

The first picture of Ros we ever saw, as a rather scared looking six-month-old.

In Beijing, still looking a bit suspicious of these new parental types.

OMG! That first photo is really stunning. She is a very beautiful little girl. It's lovely that Ros and the other little girl get on so well too. They'll be lifelong friends.

I can't believe all that time has gone by either, but you have a very happy family now.

Ros is definitely an awesome kid. And we're glad she has a few friends that are also from China. That can only make things easier as she grows up and has someone to talk to who's going through the same things.

I can't believe five years has passed so quickly - I remember your posts before you got her, so full of excitement about how your life was going to change.

And I'm so happy for you and your family. She's a gorgeous little girl!!

I can't believe it's already been five years either. And yeah, our lives have certainly changed. And I wouldn't change a thing.

She is just adorable! That black and white pic is like a work of art, it's lovely.
Time flies by and they grow up so quickly, she'll be off on her own before you know it. These are good memories now to treasure in the future.

The other dad is a big photography buff with a serious, professional-grade camera. He always takes the best pics.

What a beautiful little girl. She's really growing up. Jelly beans were my favorite too.

She's growing up so fast that it's sometimes scary. (I'm awfully fond of jelly beans too!)

How on earth can it be 5 years already? Here's to many many more equally happy years for your family. :)

Oh what beautiful pics :D 'Other dad' is definitely a great photographer, and I have to compliment Ros on her taste for green tops in the last two pics (it's probably a coincidence, but it made me smile, because at that stage I loved the color green, and would have worn nothing else if I could get away with it!)

The other dad is a fantastic photographer, and has a serious, professional-level camera, which doesn't hurt.

As a toddler, Ros' fave colours were green and orange. (You can see her orange track bottoms in the hoodie pic.) She has since moved on to blue, pink and purple.

Where have five years gone? I can remember the posts before you got her and how excited you were.

That first picture is utterly stunning - she is one beautiful little girl.

What lovely photos! Thanks for sharing! That first one is fabulous - you can almost touch the textures of her hair and clothes.

I have another friend on my f'list who has adopted from China. Her little boy is almost exactly the same age (just 4) as my grandson ( birthdays within a few days of each other) so I'm following his progress avidly.

Ros has clearly adapted to being Canadian with no problems and seems to be a gloriously happy little girl. I love hearing about her.

That first photo is quite fantastic.

It's always fascinating to hear about other kids adopted from China. We've got a nice group of friends who's kids are all from China. I like that Ros will have peers she can talk to as she grows up and faces things I never had to.

We feel very lucky that Ros was the child chosen for our family. She's always fit in very well.

The first pic is a great piece of art! The second pic is so touching - she looks scared, like you wrote, but there is also a very deep sadness in her eyes. A small child should never look like that, it hurts to look at such a picture...

It's great there is a happy ending, and it seems to me you and your daughter do each other good ;-).

Happy Adoption Day! *g* How great to happen to have someone around who can do gorgeous photos like that top one - I love the colour ones too, but there's something so nice about a really good quality B&W.

Thank you! It is a nice bonus to have some one who can take pictures like that. I've always been fond of black and white. When I had a film SLR camera, I always got more B&W film than colour.
