It's Going to Be an Interesting Summer

Got a call today from the soccer club Ros plays with. Looks like they took me up on my offer and I'm going to be coaching her U6 soccer team.

Yikes.

I've been an unofficial assistant coach the last couple of years--meaning I've done the player rotation and led the team when the coach is on vacation--but this year I'll be handling a team all on my own. At least there are referees this year.

Ros is happy. (She's been encouraging me to volunteer for the last two years.) I'm slightly terrified.

*\o/*

My older brother coached his kids' soccer teams and loved it so much he's still doing it even though his eldest no longer plays and his younger son now plays on a more elite team.

I have to admit I've been toying with doing it for a while. (I played footie with a group of friends every Sunday for years and years.) It's always been the matter of lack of time that kept me from doing it. That, and the fact that coaching 4 year olds at footie really is like herding cats. I"m hoping the 5/6 age group will be slightly less likely to play in mud/pick flowers/stare at the sky/clump onto the ball whilst on the field. ;-)

Well, that sounds like fun too. :D

My favourite coaching moment the first year was the game I coached in a raging rain storm. (There was no thunder/lightning so we couldn't call it.) I was running down the field, trying to keep the kids concentrating on the ball, turned around, and one of the girls had managed to coat herself entirely in mud. On purpose. Then she ran forward and got me with her very muddy hands. At least her mum was understanding. Apparently she did that sort of thing all the time.

That's really cool. You guys will have a blast. Enjoy that little girl. :)

I love footie and I've been loving going to Ros' soccer games and helping out. I'm sure it'll be a blast.

Awwwwww! This is brilliant! You're going to be ACE! *wishes she was 5-year-old Canadian soccer girl* *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall be...adequate. ;-) ::wishes you were on this side of the pond so you could help out!::

I need a TT footie icon.

I'll be there in thoughts! ::HUGS::

I need a TT footie icon too! Desperately! Don't we all?!?

Sounds awesome! You'll be fab *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It should be fun. I'll likely be adequate. ::madly scrambles to find age appropriate practice exercises.

Congratulations!
You're going to rock it:)

(I'd love to read some football/soccer posts from you...)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if congratulations or condolences are in order. But it should be fun.

I have a feeling there will be more footie posts in my future. (Need more footie icons.)

Yay - sounds hard work but fun. Good luck :D

Keeping 10 little kids focused for an hour should prove...interesting. But fun.

That's so cool - congrats! Try not to corrupt their young, impressionable minds too terribly. ;-)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll only teach them that footie is way more fun than stinky old hockey. (Practically heresy up here in the Great White North. *g*)

[identity profile] saintvic.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You will be brilliant at it luv.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My main ambition is to survive the season. ;-)

[identity profile] jawanderer.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Terrified sounds about right, but I'm positive it's unnecessary and you'll be brilliant at it! :)

Just remember the most important part is to have fun!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-30 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If I can make sure everyone has fun, I'll have done my job. And hopefully I'll have fun too!

[identity profile] rangerke.livejournal.com 2012-04-30 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Phew! It appears you like to keep busy. If you can get them to take the ball into the direction of the opponent’s goal, I think you’ve achieved quite a lot ;). And I guess you cherish the time Ros still enjoys her mum’s involvement ;).

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-04-30 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Busy. Yes. Ahem. Comes of having too many interests and a little 'un. But at least I'm seldom bored. ;-)

Getting the U4 teams not to score on their own goal can be challenging. At this age, I'm hoping they might get the occasional pass or two going. Last year Ros actually started dropping back to defend when the other team got the ball. I'm hoping she continues to figure out strategy a bit. And she's killer in goal. (She loves being in goal, which I find interesting.)
