Swords!

This morning at 6 a.m. I was out back of my dojo slicing open bottles with a katana. Really!

Once a year, the teacher who does weapons training at my martial arts school brings in his real katanas and lets everyone have a go at trying to slice milk cartons and plastic bottles full of water in half. It's harder than it looks. Make contact too hard and you just dent the bottle. The trick is to slice as soon as your swing connects.

It took me a couple of tries, but I managed to cut one very nicely in half.

Here I am holding the (very, very sharp) katana.

Lining up to take a swing.

Missed it by that much.

Success!

Very cool!! Yikes, would not like to meet you in a dark alley with that thing in your hands..

It was rather fun.

And speaking of meeting me in a dark alley, you'll note that I'm standing on the driveway for the apartment building behind us. When I was getting ready to take a swing, a car came up from the building and drove past me holding the sword and all the rest of the class swooped out behind me. I have to say, the driver seemed remarkably calm about running into a small, middle-aged woman holding a sword on his driveway.

I said it before and I'll say it again - never getting on your bad side!!! ;)

(I have no icons of any of TT looking suitably terrified, so here, have a wide-eyed top-hatted Markie instead! :P)

But hey, if anyone gets on your bad side, you know who to come to. ;-)

Excellent! You are a woman of amazing versatility.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-06-15 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Or at least of varied interests!

Awesome! Well done!

Thanks! It was far too much fun.

Awesome!

Bonus: you are all set for the zombie apocalype. Because sometimes you need to kill them silently, and of course, eventually you run out of bullets.

Funnily enough, one of the guys in the class had this wicked-looking black two-handed sword that we all started calling the Zombie Killer. But yes, I probably could behead a zombie if called upon. ;-)

Hee! You'd scare me off, no trouble - you really look like you mean business *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-06-15 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, milk cartons certainly live in fear of me now. I'm not sure about actual human beings. *g*

Swords! Hot!

Your photographer did a great job!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-06-15 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I do love my edged weapons. *g*

The photographer was one of my classmates I handed my camera to at the last minute. And yeah, he did a fabulous job.

Oh fantastic! No mercy to the milk cartons, that's what I say.. :D It looks very satisfying.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2012-06-15 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It was satisfying, if a little bit scary. The swords were very, very sharp, so you had to be very careful not to go swinging them around with people nearby, and to pass them off to the next person in a very controlled, regimented way.

How fun! You look fabulous. My youngest trained with weaspons when she was studying. I still have it in the house somewhere... :)

Weapons training is fun. It's less strenuous than regular training, but takes more mental work.

Awesome pics.

Aren't they, though?
