Another Weekend, Another Sports Post

We're visiting my mom up north, and three generations of Zed women had their favourite teams playing today. Only one of us is happy tonight. (Alas, it isn't me.)

Wisconsin just finished playing an incredibly close game against Kentucky. Unfortunately, they had some really messy moments and lost by a single point. But they played their hearts out, and I have to admit that Kentucky really deserved their win. (Doesn't mean I wouldn't have taken the win, though.)

Ros' Leafs played Winnipeg. They had to win tonight to have a hope of making the playoffs, but Winnipeg took them out.

The one bright spot was my mom's beloved Blue Jays took down the hated Yankees , 4 - 0.

At least Wisconsin gets to play the consolation game on Monday, but it's just not the same.

Of course they don't. (Our local paper lied.)

Bummer. I wasn't able to watch the Badger game, and your post was the first thing I saw this morning. Ah, well. But I'm glad they went down fighting!

I'm sorry that Ros is dealing with an end to the season as well, although if she's going to be a sports fan, learning to cope is part of the deal, isn't it? *g*

I'm happy if anyone gets the Yankees!

The Badger game was a nail biter, especially in the second half. (My mom even got into it, and was rooting for Wisconsin along with me. This is extraordinary, because pretty much my whole life when I'd be watching basketball, things always pretty much went this way: Mom: Which one's your team? Me: The Celtics/Badgers. Mom: Right, I'm rooting for the other ones. She's definitely mellowed, a little, in her old age.)

Ros will certainly be learning about end of season disappointment if she stays devoted to the Leafs. (I'm horrible, but it's totally true. They haven't won the Stanley Cup since the year the Sweetie was born.)

You and my mom would totally get along. She loathes the Yankees. Once the Jays are out of the running, she'll root for whoever has the best chance of taking out the Yankees.

I regret to admit I don't even know what the sport is. Blush. But I know the feeling of following a team, and I sympathise! Better luck next season!

It's three sports, actually. The Badgers are the U of Wisconsin's basketball team (I did grad school in Wisconsin), the Leafs are the Toronto hockey team, and the Blue Jays are the Toronto baseball team.

Meanwhile the Sweetie ignores sports entirely and is bemused to find himself in a household of sports-loving women. *g*

Lol! I just came in here to say that exact same thing, but I am enjoying hearing all the team names. I reckon North American teams are much more inventive than ours when it comes to naming. Seen one Rovers/FC/United, seen 'em all!

I don't know, you've got a few good 'uns. My favourite team name has got to be Sheffield Wednesday, just because it's quirky.

And I'm rather fond of the fact that our soccer/football team is Toronto F.C. It's rather quaint amongst all the Dynamos and Rapids and Galaxies.

Heh, this is true of course. And I believe Sheffield Wednesday used to be called just 'The Wednesday' and were originally a cricket club I think!

The Scottish leagues tend to throw up some corkers as far as names go. I always liked Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and Hamilton Academical. And the holy grail of Saturdays spent listening to the pools results being read out on TV and hoping against hope that you'd hear 'East Fife five, Forfar four'. :D

Yep, they were a cricket club that played on...wait for it...Wednesdays! (I looked that up a couple of years ago when a mate at work and I were wondering why the heck they were called Wednesday.)

Oooh, I love the Scottish clubs' names! Not to mention "East Fife five, Forfar four." *g*

Oh yes, the Scottish ones are lovely. How about just 'Hearts'? And Partick Thistle was another for me.

Hamilton Academical - brilliant.
