Taking a break from the tedium that is packing up our main floor to get hardwood this week, I went online and just for fun decided to check the stats on my website. Only to find out that I was already over 3 GB for the month. And it's only May 8. I don't usually use 3 GB in bandwidth for a whole month.

In poking around, I found one site that's linked directly to one of my LotR vids. I'd normally just send them an email asking them to link to the main page. Problem is, the site's in Chinese, and Babelfish chokes on translating it. (Anyone on my flist read Chinese well enough to figure out the email for this page: http://bj2.netsh.com/bbs/98534/messages/3680.html?)

The other, more major thing I found is that my Pros vids got 350 hits. In one day. Each. Can't figure out where that traffic's coming from, but I'm just betting someone's streaming the vid instead of saving it to their machine. Prats.

Consequently, I've zipped up those vids so that you have to download them to watch 'em. I'd really held off on doing that, but it looks like it's time. I'll be zipping up the rest of the collection over the next few weeks. Once the hardwood floor is installed, anyway.

I'm sorry you had to take that step. It sucks that they would do that. It sucks that people just don't THINK, or educate themselves, or anything. *hugs*

Thanks for the support. It's not a huge deal in the greater scheme of things, but it is most annoying. I'm just glad I don't have a limited bandwidth account.

That really sucks. I saw another LJ where someone who was an artist had someone hotlinking to their photo's. She got her revenge by replacing the hotlinked file with a low-rez picture of a road-killed rabbit and with the message that said something to the effect - Everytime you steal my art a bunny somewhere gets run over -

Maybe you could swap the hotlink with a very rude vid of you flipping them off? Or something equally funny. I am sure you can use your imagination. Don't let the opportunity go to waste.

I considered doing a brief, sarcastic vid file to replace the hotlinked one-another vidder used the same strategy a little while ago-but frankly that would take time I don't have at the moment. Once the floor is done and we've done the painting, I'll prep a little file to use in the event this happens again.
