The England Trip - Harry Potter

We were lucky that Ros got into Harry Potter before our trip, so we could plan a few Harry Potter themed activities. The big one was a visit to the Harry Potter sets in Leavesden. (When we bought our train tickets at St. Pancras to Watford Junction, the bloke at the counter said "So, you're going to see Harry Potter, then?" Apparently, there's nothing else to do at Watford Junction. *g*)

The Sweetie and I figured it would take an hour or two to do the exhibits. When we got there, the signs said to allow three hours. In the end, we took five, and I feel like we could have spent even more time, there's just so much stuff there. Ros is not generally a big one for museums or exhibits, but she loved it all. If she hadn't, I'm sure she'd have managed to drag us through it all in an hour.

We never had time to get Ros' pic taken at Platform 9 3/4 in King's Cross station, but fortunately they had trolleys you could get your pic taken with here.

I'm rather fond of snakes (I was born in the year of the snake) so Ros took my picture in front of the Chamber of Secrets door. One thing that was fascinating about the tour was how much of the movies was created with actual physical props rather than CGI.

Here we all are on the Hogwarts bridge.

I was surprisingly chuffed that you could sit in the Weasleys flying car.

And here's the Sweetie and Ros on Hagrid's motorcycle.

One of the many smart things the tour does to keep kids engaged is to give them all a passport book. They have to find the station to get a page of the book embossed in every room. They also hide golden snitches all over the place that you have to find.

There were a lot of amazing things--Ollivanders wand shop, Dumbledore's study, Snape's potion classroom--but this is one of the things I was most impressed by: the animatronic Buckbeak. He would actually bow to you.

Until recently, I've never been a huge fan of Mr. Potter. I never got past the first book, and I watched the movies more because they're chock full of actors I love than because I enjoyed them.

But I have to say that reading the books with Ros has really turned it around for me. The books do get better, and the emotions of the characters get deeper. We just finished Goblet of Fire last week and I struggled to keep it together when I was reading the scene where Harry duels with Voldemort. When his mother and father appear to help him, I just about lost it. Ros gave me the usual side eye I get from her when I'm about to cry whilst reading a kid's book.

(Kid's books, man. I never cry reading adult books. On this trip I nearly lost it in Waterstone's when we were in the kid's section and they had a display with all the World War II kid's books I loved when I was a kid. I Am David and The Silver Sword, I'm looking at you.)

Today had a bit of a Harry Potter theme, too. It's Ros' birthday--how did she get to be nine?!--and we surreptitiously picked up Hermione's wand and a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans in the Harry Potter store for her. It took her about 0.5 seconds to guess what was in those pressies. *g*

Great pictures - it sounds and looks as though you all had a great time. That is a super way to keep kids interested.

I'm actually on my goodness only know how many reread of Harry Potter and am on Goblet of Fire.

She can't be nine!! Where have the years gone? It's scary.

Happy Birthday, Ros!

The whole trip was fab, but the Harry Potter sets were definitely a high point.

Now that I'm deep into the series, I can finally understand the loyalty the book inspire. I doubt I'll reread them heavily, if at all (too little time, too much else on the book shelf) but I can sympathize with wanting to revisit that world.

Nine! It's inconceivable!

What a great trip you had! And what an absolutely wonderful way for Ros to celebrate her birthday. I've never read the Potter books, but I loved the movies, so your pictures really make me want to visit the studio.

It was a wonderful trip all 'round.

I tolerated rather than enjoyed the movies, but finally reading the books is definitely making a difference.

The sets do look fascinating - I would love to know more about the craftsmen who manage to make, for example, the Hogwarts bridge, look convincingly ancient and weathered in such a subtle way *g* And I'm glad to hear Ros got her wand! *g* Happy Birthday to her!

They do give you a lot of information on the making of the series. The headphones we're all wearing in the pics are for a multimedia guide that has not just audio, but loads of videos from the actors, directors, and technical people. Between seeing the actual objects and getting all that extra content, it's a completely fascinating experience. Both the Sweetie and I came away extremely impressed at the craft that went into the films.

Ros used her wand to promptly put the Imperius curse on her dad. Maybe she's the Slytherin in our house. *g*

Tell me Ros isn't 9 already? Good lord but we're in trouble. We'll be 80 in two days. LOL!

Fabulous pictures! What great fun you all had.

I have a 9-year-old daughter. How did that happen?

It was a really great trip! And fortunately Ros is all primed now to go back again.

Ros can't be nine! She's seven, surely? She's really nine???

What fun those sets look to have been. I have read all the Harry Potter books, although I took my time. My nieces and nephew were into them. They do get better, deeper, as they go along (and as their audience ages). They still aren't books I'll likely reread, but I'm glad to have read them all.

Thank you for sharing the photos. It looks like a splendid time was had be all. Happy birthday to Ros!

Nine! Nine! Or as the Sweetie has started reminding me, halfway to eighteen!

The books definitely improve. It also helps that Rowling gets deeper into the characters and we develop greater understanding about everyone. (Fred, George and Neville are totally my favourites.)

A grand time was had by all.

what an awesome experience for you all! and what terrific birthday fun for Ros (how the hell is she *nine* already?)

I'm glad you guys were able to go and have such a good time

It was a really great trip. And yeah, nine. That's crazy!

I would like to take that Buckbeak home. . . great trip! Nine. . . wow. . .too fast.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2015-07-08 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So would I! But I think they'd notice. He's full-sized, bigger than me!

Just watch, your grandson will be nine soon enough. ;-)

That place looks amazing! I wasn't a fan of the films but loved the books - all the same, I'd like to see all the sets and props from the films.

Nine already, hey. It really does go too quickly.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2015-07-09 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if you don't like the movies, the amount of care and effort put into the props and sets is pretty impressive.

Nine is sort of unbelievable.

I'm so glad that you all had such a great time.

I've only just got into the HP books. I'd watched the first couple of films when they came out but wasn't too impressed. However, going on holiday with a load of HP fans, it seemed easier to give in to peer pressure & give the books a try. Oh my goodness - I loved them! I couldn't put them down (read the lot in 2 weeks!) And I'm with you - I cried a lot (especially during the last couple.)
Now, I'm looking forward to going to Leavesden, too!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2015-07-09 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The books are definitely far more engaging than the movies. (I saw all the movies but the last one as they came out. I just couldn't be arsed to watch that last one.) I'm rather alarmed that your crying went up in the last few books. Looks like I'm going to be getting a lot of side eye from Ros. ;-)

I can totally recommend the trip to Leavesden!

[identity profile] bluespirit-star.livejournal.com 2015-07-10 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you might want to have a hankie on standby. *g*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2015-07-10 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no!!! *g*

[identity profile] moth2fic.livejournal.com 2015-07-15 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Fabulous!! And happy belated birthday to Ros!
Now I have to get Jamie into the books so that I have an excuse to go to Leavesden... My cousin went to teacher training college in Alnwick Castle, which is used for some of the outdoor stuff - it gives her terrific street cred with her pupils - to be able to say she went to Hogwarts!!
I wonder if the real props as opposed to CGI are responsible for the solid feel and enormous appeal of the films?

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2015-07-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you can get him into the books, I'm sure he'll love the Leavesden studios. They're pretty impressive.

Street cred with students is always a good thing. *g*

I'm sure the physical props help with the feeling of the Potter universe being a real world.
