Footie and Camp

Yesterday, we dropped Ros off for her first ever week of sleepaway camp. She was very excited, and eager for it all to get started, which meant that the meltdown we feared might hit never came. (I, however, was a leetle bit teary, but managed to successfully hide it.) As we were leaving, the counsellors were taking the girls in Ros' cabin for a welcome swim, and Ros barely looked back. Hopefully she's having a grand time. (The main counsellor will be calling on Wednesday to let us know how Ros is doing, so we've got our fingers crossed.)

Even with Ros gone, we still had to coach the soccer team tonight. We had a practice last week and I ran a bunch of passing practices that seems to have paid off. The girls are doing a bit better at passing to each other, though they started bunching up more towards the end of the game. We still can't score, though, but since our goalies and defence did their usual bang up job, score was a nil - nil tie. I'll take that as a success.

At the next practice, I'm going to have them work on passing and running plays off corner kicks. If I'm feeling ambitious, I'm going to try and introduce the wall pass. Back when I was younger and quicker I used to love doing those.

Last night the Sweetie and I used our child-free status to fall asleep in front of the 1969 version of The Italian Job. (That is one sloppy, sloppy film. It seems entirely built around the question "what cool buildings can we drive Minis on in Torino?" and plot coherence and character development be damned.) Tonight, I've managed another 2,000 words on the spy story. (Win!)

I bet Ros is having the time of her life, and will be so excited to tell you all about it when she gets home. But doesn't it feel strange, like there's a Ros-shaped hole in your daily life!

I'm sure she's having a great time. Before she left, she was already talking about going for two weeks next year.

But yeah, there's definitely a Ros-shaped hole, and I'm constantly thinking about her and hoping she's having fun.

I bet she's missing you both from time to time...when she has a moment amongst all the fun! Welcome to a new stage of parenthood. *g*

Yay for the drills paying off and here's to continued success, with maybe a goal or two added in. *g*

Yay for writing! \o/

Hopefully she's not missing us too much. Just enough. *g* It's definitely a new stage of parenting. We were camping at on a friend's property on Saturday and we barely saw Ros the whole day. She was off running around with the other kids there.

The drills definitely seem to be paying off. We had multiple scoring opportunities last night, but just couldn't seem to get it in the net. Ah, bien.

Yay for writing indeed. I'm over the expositional hump and am now deep into writing the fun stuff. Hopefully it will continue to come quickly from now on. I've been following your writing adventures, too. Go, you! Looking forward to the BB story.

Noel Coward and Michael Caine. All over arguments are invalid. *nods*

I'm sure Ros will enjoy camp and I hope you get to enjoy the time too.

Coward and Caine are definitely fun, as are the Minis and the sixties design. But having a heist that made sense and characterization beyond having a villain called "Camp Freddie" would have made it so much better. (I expect a better script from Troy Kennedy Martin.)

I'm sure Ros is having a blast, but I am looking forward to hearing from her counselor tomorrow just to make sure.

But so many 60s films were all about the attitude more than anything. I still prefer it to the 2003 remake that did attempt to inject more plot. Mark Wahlberg, just say no.

Much as I love Coward and I do, I was horrified when I found out that The Third Man was originally intended to be Cary Grant (whom I also love) and Noel Coward.

I'm sure Ros is enjoying herself! You guys try not to sleep it all away! :)

I'm sure she's having a grand time.

Sleeping it away isn't going to be a problem. We took in two movies last night (Trainwreck and Spy, both enjoyable fun) and I'm off to the fencing competition at the Pan Am games tonight.

It's weird when they're away - but good too :D I'm sure Ros has had a great time!

Weird but good about sums it up. I miss her, but it was nice not to have to manage someone else's meals, bedtimes, toothbrushing, etc. ;-)

We've had a report from her counselor that she's having a fab time. Pick up is tomorrow, so we'll find out for sure then. And if she's still up for two weeks of camp next year.
