Off to London

I can't believe we leave for London on Friday. I have too much to do before then (including making more headway on my new vid for MediaWest, and not forgetting the laundry), but I'm so looking forward to the trip. I get to hook up with [livejournal.com profile] bluespirit_star, as well as a friend from my university days who has taken up residence in the U.K.

But, as always, my main reason for going over is the theatre.

Les Miserables
Not a first choice of mine, but the trip is for my mother-in-law, and neither she nor the Big Guy have seen a West End version of this war horse. Plus, it's the only big musical I still have some affection for.

Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2
The real reason I pushed to take the trip now. Not only is Part 1 probably my fave play by Shakespeare, but Matthew Macfadyen (Tom in MI5/Spooks) is playing Hal and Michael Gambon is playing Falstaff. Should be awesome.

Julius Caesar
Never a favourite of mine (I had the world's worst English teacher in grade nine when we studied this) but I couldn't resist Simon Russell Beale as Cassius. Oh, and Ralph Fiennes plays Mark Antony.

Someone Who'll Watch Over Me
A play about three hostages in Beirut, my chief reason for picking this one was the opportunity to see Aiden Gillen (QAF UK) and Jonny Lee Miller onstage.

Theatre of Blood
Jim Broadbent (Topsy Turvy) stars in what looks to be a quite mad theatrical version of a Vincent Price movie from the '70s. And it's at the National.

The Cosmonaut's Last Message...
Experimental stuff from the Donmar Warehouse. My chief attraction here is Michael Pennington, who was a co-founder and star of the English Shakespeare Company and one of my fave theatre dudes.

The Producers
Another one for the mother-in-law, but I'm curious to see it. We had tickets to the Toronto run, but the show closed early and we didn't get to go.

Oh my god, I am a puddle of envious drool.

I don't suppose you could wrap up Ralph Fiennes and bring him back for me in your suitcase?

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ralph is all yours. I'm bringing back Matthew Macfadyen for myself. (Think Don'll notice?)

I'd love to take a THEATRE holiday like that. Ah, maybe when I am retired and filthy rich. Yeah, okay so it ain't going to happen anytime soon.

Enjoy and we look forward to lots of tales when you get back.

If accomodation weren't soooo hideously expensive, London wouldn't be so bad. (I used it as a cheap vacation when I had friends there to stay with.)

[identity profile] lilithilien.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Soooo jealous ... would love to see Someone To Watch Over Me. And yeah, pretty much for the same reasons as you want to see it. Enjoy!!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll report back on how the lads are. I'm looking forward to it.

Hope your trip to our shores is a good one. A theatre holiday is certainly an intriguing idea...

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Any time I make it to England it always turns into a theatre holiday. (Back in the day, I missed seeing Alan Rickman in Dangerous Liaisons by 6 months, alas. Though Greg Hicks made a pretty good replacement.)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Where the heck is that quote from? Was he in the Sweeney?

And I shall indeed have a good time and say hi to Penny for you.

[identity profile] blktauna.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He played Shouting George of the Weeney in the second Bullshitters.
;)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I've so got to see the Bullshitters one of these days. You bringing it to ZCon?

You sound really busy - any chance of a quick drink or anything? How long you got?

Liza

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-02 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm doing theatre every evening, but I'm totally free Wednesday during the day. (Don's taking his mum to Paris for a few days.) You free at all that day?

[identity profile] llinos.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've emailed you :D

[identity profile] paris7am.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds divine...
You have mail :)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You rock!

[identity profile] faramir-boromir.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember, extra Julius Caesar program for me!!! And boy, do I want a rundown on what happens in that one.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely.

Are you interested in the programs for anything else. 'Cause I reckoned I'd just get you one of everything. Well, except maybe Les Miz and The Producers. ;)

[identity profile] faramir-boromir.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, skip the musicals (sorry)...but anything at the National, or anyplace else you go (esp. Barbican), yeah, just get em and I'll send you money to pay for the programs and the mailing.... and we can talk about what sort of payback you want later! Thanks!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt I'll be getting programs for the musicals. *g* (They're primarily for Don's mom.)

When I get back I'll have six hours of Who for you as well.

[identity profile] faramir-boromir.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*rolls on ground and writhes in anticipation* You're my hero!!!

Sounds like a blast

[identity profile] canadiansuzanne.livejournal.com 2005-05-03 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! I can't believe you could squeeze in that many shows in one vacation! Have a great time. I can't wait to hear the report when you get back.

Happens every time I got to London. I see how much cool stuff is playing and go on a feeding frenzy of theatre.
