Just great...

The Bad News:
The Conservatives will be forming the next federal government in Canada.

The Good News:
It will be a minority government, and a weak minority at that. And with them in power, this time the left-leaning Bloc Quebecois will be unlikely to support them and their whack-job socially conservative agenda.

The Best Outcome:
Harper is unable to rein in the right-wing, Christian nutjobs who make up a large number of his M.P.s (the ones who oppose gay marriage and abortion, the rights of women and minorities), then the Liberals, NDP and Bloc take them down on the first piece of loony legislation they table. A girl can dream, can't she?

I won't be moving to New Zealand quite yet, but I'll definitely be watching how this all develops.

Yeah, I'm hoping the Bloc will do the job and rid us of the nutcases as soon as possible.
Not that I want another electoral campain, but still...

I don't want another campaign if it gives us a Conservative majority. Ideally, I'd like to see them do something so crazy that no one outside of Alberta will ever vote for them again.

Quite agree!
The liberals have quite a lot of work in front of them :)

And the NDP (says the good leftie.)

The NPD's never managed to do well here, even before the Bloc.

I don't quite know why.

You think you have whackjobs?

How do you think _I_ feel?!?!?!?

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, you got me there.

Hey, you still owe me an address. I've got a New Years card all ready and waiting to go.

At least the Liberal got in in my riding. Not that that helps all that much.

Well, the Liberals and NDP taking Toronto is what kept the Conservatives from getting a majority, so I'd say it helped a lot.

Volpe? We're in the same riding, right? Because my sister, who as you know lives about as far west of me as you do east, is in a different riding.

God. If anybody had told me even six months ago that Harper'd be forming the next government, I'd have laughed. "Please. We're not going to move that far back to the Dark Ages," I'd have said in my most superior, we'd-never-have-elected-Bush tones.

Feeling all humbled now. Stoopid country.

Damn. and I was so hoping to hide in your attic.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not good. Although on the positive side, our Conservatives aren't nearly as right as yours. And I live in hope that when voters find out that, yeah, they really are that nutty they'll vote them out in spades when they inevitably fall.

In the meantime, I think we should look into starting a fan enclave in New Zealand. (Socially progressive and way warmer than Sweden.)

With the number of seats he has, he can't do much of anything and with the gag order off of his right wing MPs we only have to wait for the fur to fly. If he manages to even push through his campaign upon budget it will be a miracle unless he manages to form a coalition of some sort with the Bloc and that's not very likely.

The Conservatives may have won but actually being able to govern with that low a minority is impossible.

See you at the polls in October ;-)

Oh god, not again. ;-/

It won't last forever, whew!

I was bummed about Harper, but relieved he only got a minority.

My older son did a Lego movie parody of the election campaign for school. Harper was "Darth Harper". Need I say more?

Of course, in the worst case scenario, the government falls and everyone's pissed off enough about voting again to give the Conservatives a majority. (Then I really will move to New Zealand.)
