MediaWest UNCLE Panel

Since I thought it was a shame that there were only 2 UNCLE panels listed for MW this year, I wracked my brains and came up with a new topic at the last minute. I've heard back from the Programming people that they've accepted it, though it isn't showing on the website list of topics yet.

The topic is:
A. Television: Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Espionage Plot, Character Study or Romance. Slash or gen, what kind
of U.N.C.L.E story do you most like to read or write?

The topic was inspired by a continued conversation I've been having with a (non-UNCLE) fannish friend (hi [livejournal.com profile] stormheller) about how much slash can be considered part of the Romance tradition. (Stormy says she's writing more romance; me, I'm usually, though not always, thinking about the action genre end of things.) I think the same thing dichotomy exists in gen, and since I always like seeing the two wings of UNCLE mix, I included both types of fanfic in the description.

My next goal is to get a few people signed up on the panel with me. So, for the UNCLE types on my flist, if you're at all interested in this, and you're going to be at MW, it would be awesome to have you on the panel.

The instructions for signing up are here

Totally not the point of your post, but a little relevant anyway.

I've been giving it more thought (surprise!) and I think sometimes I write "action adventure/hero's journey" and sometimes romance. It's fairly easy to add a romance element to action/adventure, but according to Brian Henry's writing class, romance has more internal conflict, whereas the quest-y stuff has more external conflict. I figure it has more to do with which is the central theme and which is the secondary. (Hey, didn't you say something like that?)

I'm going to ask Cindy Walker about it at her panel this year, if only I can come up with some coherent way of wording my question/observation.

Hey, didn't you say something like that?

Probably. It's a scriptwriting 101 kinda thing. Standard Hollywood plot: A plot, action/adventure; B plot, heterosexual romance. Standard slash plot: A plot, homosexual romance; B plot, action/adventure.

Well, those of us with business degrees who took things like "Shopping Centre Location Theory 101*" and "The Mathematics of Retailing 101" and "Supply Chain Management 101" are dependant on YOU to tell us this stuff. Call me "Grasshoppper". ;-)

* This one, if applied on a galaxy-wide basis, might actually come in handy on that "It's a Mall World After All" SGA fic I'm thinking of writing.

I'm going to ask Cindy Walker about it at her panel this year

Here I am: you can ask me now :)

Or save it for a discussion in the Adv. seminar

Can't we just come along and heckle? ;)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sure you can heckle. But then I'm dragging you up on the panel with me.

[identity profile] graculus.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But I'm already doing two panels, including a WWW one! *looks pitiful*

Besides, heckling is more fun! :P

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, then can I heckle your WWW one? *g*

[identity profile] graculus.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that depends on whether you've finished your story for GNT or not. ;)

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
La la la, I can't hear you.

[identity profile] graculus.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Pffft. Keep staring at that icon and it should all come rushing back... ;)

Nope, not replying about the panel, since I'd have nothing to say.

But it's in Lansing, at the end of May. Road trip?!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
You'll be in Kalamazoo then? Hmmm, schemes. (Email to follow.)

[identity profile] green-key.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll bite. Sounds like fun. I'll register for the panel tonight, if it's okay by you.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just okay, it's groovy. *g*

[identity profile] green-key.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
All signed up. Far out, man.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

Apropos of your topic, you may have missed the discussion on my LJ here:

(note there are three parts ---the link goes to the third and the other parts are linked there.)

I did read your posts and found them really interesting.

So, ya wanna sit on the panel?

[identity profile] st-crispins.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh. I was planning on swearing off MFU panels this year, although I will still do both my writing panels.

I guess it depends upon when it's scheduled and if you're desperate for a panelist.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel pressured. Sith's going to sign up, and Linda's volunteered, so I think we're good.

I'm looking forward to your writing panels this year. I took a couple of years off them, but I think it's time to go back and be inspired. (No pressure. *g*) Plus, [livejournal.com profile] stormheller loves them, so we can sit together and be your groupies.

[identity profile] st-crispins.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll sit in your audience if you sit in mine :)
