Fun with Books

So the baby's managed to pull most of the books on my R and S shelf onto the floor and me and the Sweetie are putting them back. He picks up my copy of Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott.

Sweetie: So Scott, what's he famous for?
Me: I suppose his best known book is Ivanhoe.
Sweetie: Ivanhoe? I thought that was Russian.
Me: What?!
Sweetie: Yeah, I thought it was about a farmer named Ivan. Ivan? Hoe?
Me: O_O

Yeah, he was serious. But I don't hold it against him. He's a computer programmer. (Actually a rather well read computer programmer. Just not when it comes to anything before the 20th century. Or involving English history.)

More likely she was claiming my books as her own. She loves playing with books. Her books, my books, any books.

We're hoping it bodes well for her being a reader. We just have to get her past the stage where she also wants to crumple, tear and eat books as well as look through them.

Wish we could do that, but this is a house of many, many, many books and it's just not feasible. We did, however, reorganize everything so the DVDs and CDs are out of baby reach. Otherwise, we're just supervising her explorations and trying to teach her to be gentle.

Good on Rosalind - making her own shelf space! We have ended up with a kind of tier system on ours, with lots of authors in Turkish and in English, since hubby and I both have similar tastes. But it's bloody ridiculous how many duplicates we've got!

My eldest used to spend a lot of time pulling books out of the bookcase too. She's now grown-up of course and a voracious reader so I think you can take Rosalind's *hobby* as a good sign. :-)

He also used to think the Flock of Seagull's "I Ran" was called Iran. About, you know, the country formerly known as Persia. (He thought the chorus was "Iran's so far away." Which does make a sort of sense. *g*)
