Well, That's Interesting

I got an email and follow up phone call from my alma mater today.

Seems they're doing a Oscar Party/Broadcast as part of their 175th anniversary. It's a fundraising kind of thing in their 500 seat theatre.

They want me to moderate a film panel as part of the festivities.

Given it's less than two weeks before the big event, and I'm no longer either a film academic or in the film industry, I'm betting they tried for some bigger guns and couldn't get them, and I'm the hail Mary desperation pass. But it's still kinda cool.

So, whaddaya think flist? Should I do it?

YES YES YES!

as long as I can have your notes.

I'm sure there will be a posting with the gory details after it's all over. ;-)

IF you think it would be fun then hell, yes. If not, no.

Life's too short to pack in any more "shoulds" then we already have.

I mostly think it'll be fun.

Though the part of me that's occasionally insecure about not being in academia anymore is quailing a bit.

The Sweetie--a huge cinephile himself--is pumped on my behalf.

You're being asked to moderate a film panel. That means you do a little reading up/watching IF it's something you're not familiar with and other than that you use your intelligence, wit and knowledge of film while watching the films, listening to the panel speak, controlling the Q & A and timing the thing. I don't think there's anything to be insecure about. ♥

So fun=dooooooooooooo eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's well within my experience. (I moderate panels all the time at cons, and I teach up to fifty people at a time regularly.)

The one thing that's an open question is how it's going to be moderating a panel of two older, more experiences blokes. Depending on their level of authority/entitlement, it could be...interesting. Then again, I'm dying to throw a few gender questions in there, just to stir the pot.

Well, there you go, then.

YES!!!

Can you say BUCKET LIST. Even if it wasn't on your list of things to do before you die, just pretend it is and quietly scratch it off.

Sounds cool.

It does sound cool, doesn't it. And even if it's a disaster, it's only an hour. Worst case scenario, it'll be a funny story to tell.

[identity profile] ancastar.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely you should do it! You love film and you get to be a bigwig for a night. It sounds like fun to me.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have to do it, don't I. (Every single person I've told this about has been of the opinion that it's too cool not to do.)

[identity profile] ancastar.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
You do. You really do.

[identity profile] msmoat.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, but it's good to be the hail Mary desperation pass go to person! *g* I think it sounds like fun, and you'll enjoy everything around it, and you'll get to see old friends, and, and, it's just cool! You will more than hold your own. Go you!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
At best, it'll be fun. At worst, it'll be a train wreck story I can dine out on for years.

There won't really be many of the old friends, though, unless I can talk them into coming. It's my college in the university that asked me to do this (U of T works on the Oxbridge college system), but I took all my courses and made all my friends in different colleges or departments. Ah, bien.

[identity profile] norfolkdumpling.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
DO IT DO IT DO IT!!! /Kirk-voice

Totally you should go for it - and you'll blow them away and be miles better than any other person they might have tried to get first. You'll be ace!

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've taken the plunge and accepted. If it all goes horribly wrong, I'm blaming you all. ;-)
