Arrgghhh!

I seem to somehow be living in a country that has just elected a Conservative majority.

What the hell, people? I mean, just what the hell? The Conservatives lying, being in contempt of Parliament, not allowing anyone but the party faithful from attending rallies, and just generally doing heinous thing after heinous thing wasn't enough proof that their unworthy of holding seats, let alone ruling the bloody country?

At least my riding, and most of downtown Toronto, went firmly NDP.

I shall be spending the next four years with my head down.

Join the club. :-( I suppose this means my husband and I will have to look further afield if we end up with one of the loonies from the right as president next election and we have to move.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
We're definitely no longer a safe zone from right-wing looniness. ::headdesk::

[identity profile] ancastar.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I know how you feel kiddo. I hope your conservative majority only stays in power for four years, as opposed to what we've seen the last 20 years or so.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly just hoping they manage to piss everyone off in the next four years or so and get booted out next time.

I'm going to have to work at not having my unhappy face on all that time.

::grrrrr::

It was really like trying to find the lesser of the evils.

And not having one ;-(

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm a long-term NDP-er, so them getting so many seats was the one bright spot, from my POV.

But Harper is an evil, corporate-lackey robot and I want him GONE!

Sorry ;-(

They're too far left for my tastes. And Harper is way too far right...

Which leaves me with nothing ;-(

But Harper is an evil, corporate-lackey robot and I want him GONE!

I quite agree there : pretty sure he invented the expression "two-faced" ;-(

We will survive. Somehow!

Oh no. We've infected you! It's like a damn plague.

There goes my escape route to Canada.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we infected ourselves. Or at least Alberta did. (It's always the crazy oil money. That's where the stupidity comes from.)

You're escape route to Canada is now only going to get you more of the same. Though at least we've still got decent health care. For now.

Suffice to say, I feel your pain. I live in a country where the majority of people don't think Obama is an American.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
At least the popular vote still went to left-leaning parties. Now if only the Liberals and NDP would unite and wipe the bloody Conservatives off the map.

[identity profile] loyseofverlaine.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my reaction, too. WTF, electorate? You didn't pay attention to anything this man said or did in the past four years?

I also live in an orange crush riding, so I'm used our guy being in the opposition. I just hope they can find enough moderates in the Conservative party to rein in the nut-jobs.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Harper certainly produced enough rope to hang himself (oh, if only...) but it's like no one was paying attention. ::headdesk::

I'm almost hoping the nut jobs go nuts for a while, and totally alienate everyone before the next election.

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)

I was really hoping it wouldn't turn out that way... but then the Canadians who happen to be on my flist probably *cough* gave me a slightly skewed perspective on Canadian politics.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The majority of the vote still went left, but since it's split between two parties, the Conservatives went right up the middle to win most ridings. (This would be the downside of a multiparty system.)

[identity profile] m-lasha.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I grieve with thee as I had to deal with Bush II for 8 years.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just hoping we don't get 8 years of these nut jobs. ::sigh::

[identity profile] soundofthesurf.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, democracy isn't always fun, is it? But there is hope: a couple of weeks ago one of our most conservative federal states voted green. It was the reaction to a "let's build the biggest useless train station ever and destroy the old (and perfectly suitable station) and half of the city centre" in this state's capital and the catastrophe in Fukushima. There is hope. Really. *nods*

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
There's always reason to hope. And really, no one expected the NDP (our socialist party) to get as many votes as they did, so it wasn't all bad news.

[identity profile] sooguy.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I stayed up to watch the entire fiasco last night.

I am ashamed to say the Soo went Conservative too.

At least Sudbury stayed firmly in the grip of the NDP.

Going to be a hateful 4 years.

Have you heard of Haper's "Office of Religious Freedom"? Doesn't that sound like something out of "Handmaid's Tale" or "1984"?

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't bear to watch it. The sight of Stephen Harper makes me want to punch something. Mostly Stephen Harper.

Office of Religious Freedom? Seriously? Jeezus, it's going to be a long four years.

[identity profile] dorinda.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yaaaaaagh. I'm sorry--I totally know how that is.

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I know y'all have been dealing with this for ages. I just thought Canada was immune. Incorrectly, as it turns out. ::sigh::

[identity profile] dorinda.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I thought so too. I figured if things got too bad down here, I could smuggle myself across the border and live in a yurt in your yard. What is with these nutjobs getting hold of the reins...something in the water?

[identity profile] przed.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
The Conservatives have done more than enough to hang themselves this past session of Parliament, so I've got to figure it's some combination of people 1) not paying attention, 2) being dumb, 3) not recognizing Harper's evil!evilness.

If this keeps up, I may be living in a yurt in your yard. Or we both go down and hang with Paul in NZ.

::sigh::
