Snowflake 3
Jan. 6th, 2026 09:48 amDear fandom,
Thank you for welcoming me, whatever age I’ve been and whatever age the rest of you have been around me. I’ve been the younger one in a group (despite coming to interactive fandom comparatively late) and the oldest one; and yet everyone has accepted me. And when I say that, I mean you’ve accepted me, the autistic, really crap at people-ing, anxiety-ridden mess of a bisexual enby.
I remember the first mini-con I went to. There were only about ten of us max, but there was this moment, surrounded by people I’d never met, when I suddenly realised I’d found “my kind”. All the things I usually bit back and stopped myself from saying out loud, I could say and people would appreciate them, or at least not act as if there was anything wrong with saying them.
Online or offline, fandom friends have been some of the best friends I’ve made. One of my long time close friends originally friended me because I was the only other person with Chalet School as an interest on LJ, many many many years ago. We’ve seen each other through a lot of things. Fandom folk, you are my people, and I love you. Thank you for everything you’ve given me.
Love,
Sabethea
Y2K, Unix style
Jan. 6th, 2026 05:39 amWhy?
The language underpinning livejournal and Dreamwidth uses the number of seconds since January 1, 1970. This number will overflow on January 19, 2038 — not unlike the y2k problem of old.
It’s called the Unix epoch problem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem.
All told, I’ll have to figure out another method of publishing this information.

I had to reach back
Jan. 6th, 2026 01:54 am( The fics )
Meanwhile, I have some long WIPs I'm working on, even aside from "Long, Long Way to Go."
+++
One of the LJ accounts I'm trying to import, Aya's, has failed at the "Verifying username/password" stage four times, and since nothing else happens without verification, nothing is importing. DreamWidth Support says it's probably an issue on LiveJournal's side; hope things work out for you! Which is not helpful. The other LJ account I did, Schuldig's, didn't have this problem. WTF do I do now?
Wait for another time, I guess, and see if a different day makes a difference. I'll have to manually keep retrying, since the verification attempt is a one and done thing. It failed. Oh well.

A longtime fandom friend of mine has gotten into The Pitt, and I managed to catch the last two episodes of season one during an HBO marathon this weekend. It's fun having a fandom in common I can talk about with her again.

I'm Glad My Partner Is Not An Orphan
Jan. 6th, 2026 12:44 amYesterday, we got home from our journey around 3am, and crashed. Around noon, we got up and went to the local Co-Op for lunch and some groceries. Blair texted her mom saying we'd be around to get Velma somewhere around 1:30. No response, but we didn't think of it. We decided we wanted to go to another store first before picking up the dog, and Blair texted her again saying "Hey, it'll be closer to like 4pm probably, there's some more stuff we want to do."
At this time, Blair frowned, texted some more, then looked at me and said "It says my mom is only connected via satellite. My text didn't go through." She decided to try her dad. Same thing. She reached out to her sister to see if she knew where they were, or what was up, or if she could contact them. No dice.
I left the table to go upstairs and use the bathroom. When I got back, Blair was looking very worried. She said "We're packing up our lunch and leaving right now. Something isn't right."
Turns out that not only are both her mom and dad impossible to reach (texts not going through, calls going direct to voicemail) but she checked their phones (the whole family has iphones) and it turns out that her mom, her dad, and the dog, all last pinged about two hours prior. Which means after that point, all devices were either dead or deactivated. The ping? A deserted lot in the middle of nowhere.
It didn't seem great. Why would they have last pinged in an abandoned lot in the middle of nowhere? Maybe it's the true crime fans in us, but we couldn't help but let our minds wander. Were they robbed? Were they lured there? Were they dumped there? Their phones destroyed?
We got in the car and started to make our way to Sparta, where her parents live. We got in touch with her sister and her sister's husband, who live only minutes from their parents, and her sister said they would drive over. We got another call back letting us know that neither mom or dad were there. Purse, gone. Jackets, gone. Dad's car gone, mom's still there. Dog, present and accounted for.
No one knows what to make of any of this. They left of their own accord, but that seemed weird, since they were expecting us to come pick up our dog. We're all on speaker phone; we all four decide to go and meet at the coordinates of this abandoned lot. We're all confused and scared, but like, we need to find their parents?
We're about to head to the lot, when finally a bunch of texts come through.
Of course. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
Their mom and dad had been asked by a friend to come help with someone, and had gone. This friend lived in a blind spot; neither of their phones worked there, because they don't have cell service. They don't even get internet up there. Everything is fine. Everyone laughs about it.
But good lord, we all had to admit that all those details put together didn't look good, and that it was weird. I kept telling them, when we showed up to get our dog, "I'm really glad you guys are still alive!"
Anyway. I'll write up my trip later. I just wanted to talk about this first, hah.

Science
Jan. 6th, 2026 12:00 amWhen a huge earthquake struck near Kamchatka, the SWOT satellite captured an unprecedented, high-resolution view of the resulting tsunami as it crossed the Pacific. The data revealed the waves were far more complex and scattered than scientists expected, overturning the idea that large tsunamis travel as a single, stable wave. Ocean sensors confirmed the quake’s rupture was longer than earlier models suggested. Together, the findings could reshape how tsunamis are modeled and predicted.

In searching my archived fic I also found at least one older snipped marketd as published but not listed on the AO3, so if folks want a cracky dS/10th Doctor fic, that's been posted and backdated.

Excerpt:
"Maybe, in that last fleeting moment, you might just realize you treasure your individuality."I used the tag 'ambiguous ending' because I don't know where canon will take us from here, but oh man, does this video (rightfully) feel like resisting and continuing to exist as yourself against overwhelming odds and pressure is its own triumph. My heart ached, my heart soared.
The editing choices are superb, focusing on the later episodes but deploying moments from the earlier ones to subtle but devastating effect to support the vid's thesis and to bring home the weight of everything that drove us to the finale. The combination of the music choice and the way Manousos and Carol's journeys up until now are portrayed—their losses, their struggles, their stubborn perseverance—gives me a new appreciation for everything that makes them them, and leaves me feeling incredibly tender toward these two Difficult (read: human) People.
La Befana's Night
Jan. 5th, 2026 11:25 pmIt was actually a nice visit. Afterward that, it was warm enough to melt the ice and Mom and I escaped the hill. Managed to get to Macy's, picked up a last act shirt and blue jeans (all for under 34$ yay), some St. Germaine's liquor to add to my cocktail collection (am contemplating tossing the bottles all over the place back home, maybe the landlord will think it's such a mess because I drink too much) and then on to homegoods to get a new frying pan and whatever other trouble I could find (this time its name was pfeffernusse, and no I'm not sorry)
Almost blacked out at what the Chinese restaurant had jacked their prices too (we had an old menu)
I didn't get much writing done but I did finish the last of my planned
I got this from
Grab the nearest book.

The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.
I got 'I know he swaggers' from one of the two books and "The next thing I knew I was hit in the side by what felt like a streetcar.'
Hmmm I wouldn't mind meeting a swaggering man but we know which of these I'll get.
And it's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is #8 a song from your first concert. I am ashamed to say I can't even remember which WAS my first concert. I think it was this. If not it was very close to being the first.
And finally i have the whole prompt list

Habit Tracking: Week 01 (January 01 - January 03)
Jan. 5th, 2026 08:22 pm
Feathered serpent sticker from Featherbone. Shedding the skin of the old year and all.
Second half of the week! This week ended mostly on the note of miserable uncertainty about the entire geopolitical landscape. Trying not to let that overshadow everything... It doesn't really feel like a new year! I am trying to get into the mindset a bit, though. (At least completing last year's reading goals and now setting some new ones feels like something of a dividing line, so there's one thing that feels like closure and restarting!) I am glad I took Friday off, to give myself an extra day to try and get my life together, haha.
Goals for the week:
- I did read more of Manhunt
- I posted my 2026 intentions
- I posted my 2025 books
- I did not yet post my 2026 reading plans
- I did set up my 2026 reading page
- I did set up my tracking grids for January
- I did not patch the seat in the truck
Tracked habits:
- Work - 1/3 - we were closed on NYD, and I took the 2nd off
- Household Maintenance - 2/3
- Physical Activity - 1/3
- Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/3
- Non-fiction Writing - 2/3 - both over 1000 words
- Meta Work - 2/3
- Personal Writing - 3/3
- Other Creative Things - 2/3
- Reading - 3/3 - I read more of Manhunt; Alex and I read some of The Sun Dog
- Attention to Media - 3/3 - Thursday we watched three episodes of Stranger Things, and later some reviews; Friday there was storm chasing and reviews in the background; Saturday we watched some paranormal videos, the reviews later, and then news coverage after getting a late-night alert.
- Video Games - 0/3
- Social Interaction - 2/3
Total words written: 3022 on plans and reflections
And after Bella's invisible ears in the previous post:
Here's a picture of her that Alex took on New Year's Eve, complete with ears!
