Ishmael!! I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I read that. I have two copies, I lost one for a while and couldn't bear to be without it. And there were two even slashier ones by a different publishing house called Fate of the Phoenix and Price of the Phoenix where Spock saw Kirk die in flames and was kind of going mad and then someone offered him a clone, and eventually the original Kirk came back. Oh, I am SO going to have to find them and reread them they were so trashy and melodramatic.
And there was the anthology with the story called Captain's Birthday or something and Uhura needs to get into Kirk's room to set up a surprise so she persuades Spock to let her go through his quarters and the connecting alcove between his and Kirk's quarters that they use to play chess in, and then while she's in the alcove Kirk wanders in straight from the shower!!!
In high school I mostly spent my lunchtimes scribbling away in a yellow notepad a gay love story set in a Mills & Boon universe. Oh, the shame.
Did you go to uni in Madison? My sister lives in Milwaukee :)
OMG Jane Carnell and Jane Mailander!!! I am SO pulling out my zines later. I'm told M Fae isn't online. It's a shame, I've always wanted to tell her how much I love her writing and The Iceman Cometh in particular. I once read that aloud at a slashcon!
I didn't actually remember much about S&H except the 70's fashion, and the occasional fic in a zine, until the dvds came out and now I've completely fallen in love with them. I would have sworn that you couldn't have had a more canonical gay couple in a show like that til I recently rediscovered The Persuaders which has Tony Curtis surreptitiously run his fingers down Roger Moore's hand. *cough* Best not get me started on The Persuaders. Black bean soup!!! when Starsky and Hutch only have eyes for each other while they sing or when Starsky is poisoned and they hold hands across the desk. I heart them so much.
Spartacus, yes! And Ben Hur! I assume you've seen The Celluloid Closet?
I swear, it's like we're twins, raised on opposite sides of the world!!! *g*
