Oooh, the Marshak and Culbreath novels! They were totally slashy. Weren't they the authors who seemed to always manage to get either Spock or Kirk naked at least once in every novel? I have a vague memory of finding that amusing after I saw it the third or fourth time.
You were definitely advanced in high school. Though a friend and I had a running joke about writing a gay Harlequin romance (the Canadian version of Mills and Boon), I never actually got around to doing it. And I didn't write much at all after high school until I stumbled into fandom. Then I couldn't stop. *g*
I did in fact do grad school at Madison. (An M.A. in film.) How ever did your sister end up in Milwaukee? I do have to say that I adore the Milwaukee airport. I used to fly out of there, and not only did they have a really nice little, non-chain cafe, but there was a great used book store right in the airport. How cool is that?! (I haven't been through there in years, but I do hope the bookstore is still there.)
I may just have to pull out my B7 zines as well. I'm remembering just how much I loved the M. Fae and two Janes A/V stories. Sigh. (Which zine is The Iceman Cometh in?)
As for M. Fae, I actually met her, the first time I went to Escapade. She was suffering from horrendous vertigo any time she watched a TV or computer screen, hence why she's not online, but she was a fabulous person. She's a tiny little firecracker of a Scotswoman, and deigned to put up with my company for a few meals. And of course I told her how much I adored her writing.
I am going to have to get hold of The Persuaders at some point. I've got a fondness for Tony Curtis (Spartacus! Not to mention Some Like It Hot!) and that scene sounds too delicious.
And yes, I've totally seen The Celluloid Closet. In fact, I saw it at the Toronto Film Fest the year it came out. Funnily enough, with one of my film profs, a crusty older Australian dude who always seemed to point out the homoerotic elements of the films he was teaching. (This was oddly amusing since not only was he totally straight, but he's the only prof I've ever known who really did end up married to a student, and one thirty years his junior.)
And yeah, it very much is like we're twins, separated by oceans and several continents. Cool!
