Wow, How Did That Happen?

We seem to have acquired a cat. Or, more accurately, a kitten.
The week my father died, a friend up north found three abandoned kittens in a box. Fortunately, she found them just after they'd been tossed (and there are no words to express my disgust at the fact that someone thought it was okay to throw three kittens someplace where the likeliest alternative was that they would die) and she took them in. Since the SPCA in Parry Sound had recently closed down, she started looking for homes for them. The Sweetie was immediately taken with the one female and suggested we take her. (He claims not to be a cat person, but really, he's just a great big softie.)
And so, just over a month later, Pearl has come to live with us.

She's a tabby, with orangey, butterscotchy markings all over, and a tail that goes butterscotch right at the end. And she's so far pretty calm and relaxed and really great with Rosalind, even when Ros is being a bit rough. (We're slowly teaching Rosalind to be gentle with the kitty kat, but in the meantime we have to watch her like a hawk with Pearl.)
Pearl trying to figure out what that flashy thing I'm holding is.

Yeah, the Sweetie's totally not a cat person. Nope, not at all.

Date: 2008-09-23 03:27 am (UTC)Take no offense at the icon...the sentiment is not aimed at you, but it's th only icon I have with him in it!
(You can't see it in this spic, but he has that same sort of fawn-colored tinge to his fur on his belly, tail and under his neck)

Date: 2008-09-23 03:42 am (UTC)*sigh* Bunny's had her entire life of being instructed to be gentle with the cats and I still found her putting Sam in her toy cupboard the other night an hour after she was supposed to asleep in bed. *headdesk*

Date: 2008-09-23 04:24 am (UTC)Uhmm!! That last photo. I think she's trying to tell you something. Like 'He's mine now, so back off'. :)
It's lovely that Pearl is good with Rosalind, but yes, you do have to watch them until Rosalind learns a bit more about pet handling.

Date: 2008-09-23 09:41 am (UTC)I'd love another cat (kitten) but so far hubby is resisting (too tying, he says), but I know deep down he really wants one too and one day I might just present him with a fait accompli lol

(I have no Timmy icon so we'll have to settle for Billie)

Date: 2008-09-23 11:06 am (UTC)And yes, you can see the Sweetie is definitely not a cat person, can't you? Right under her paw, he looks!
I remember the reaction of our then elderly and child-shy cats when we started our family - I thought they might leave home. But they adjusted and it's a learning process for both cats and children. Lucky Ros to have a pet to love, too.

Date: 2008-09-23 12:49 pm (UTC)Once Ros gets brave enough to pick up Pearl, I expect to have to prevent her from putting her into crazy places. I reckon I'll find Pearl in the doll stroller before long.

Date: 2008-09-23 12:52 pm (UTC)I can understand thinking a cat is too tying. It's why we never got one until now. But it sounds like your hubby will melt like the Sweetie if you get another.

Date: 2008-09-23 01:10 pm (UTC)I am, however, not going to give up on the slash, the exploitation cinema, the obscure Britrock concerts. Have to keep a few things up my sleeve that'll shock the other moms in the park. *g*

Date: 2008-09-23 01:16 pm (UTC)That's a given. She will be wearing a bonnet and wrap as well.
Bunny spent a lot of time as a toddler and even older with scratches on her arms from where she'd cornered the cats and was too rough with them. We were horrible mean parents who said things like, 'serves you right', except in slightly more positive, nurturing ways. Probably, *handwaves* who remembers now.

Date: 2008-09-23 01:58 pm (UTC)Or maybe Ros will be a quicker learner than Bunny. Mind you, I think a cabbage might be a quicker learner than Bunny when it comes to the cats.

Date: 2008-09-24 12:09 am (UTC)You and your sweetie were always kind enough to cat sit Nikki for me back in the day. I knew he was a closeted cat person even then.
Word of advice - learn to trim Pearl's claws sooner than later. That will keep everyone happy and purring along.

Date: 2008-09-24 12:23 am (UTC)The Sweetie has just acknowledged that he is a closeted cat person. I think having a daughter who's an unabashed cat person has brought it out in him.
The friend who rescue the kittens warned us about the claw trimming. I've got the clippers and we're going to start asap. Although I'm also letting the vet who's seeing her tomorrow do the first round.

Date: 2008-09-24 03:19 pm (UTC)Pretty girlie! Her markings look like a 'clouded tabby' - though the colour's difficult. Over here the pale fawn is termed 'cream' and the grey 'smoke' = a smoke and cream clouded tabby... but she does look like there's some red in her as well.

Date: 2008-09-24 04:25 pm (UTC)She's definitely got 'cream' and 'smoke' but there's a definite orangey butterscotch mottled all through her coat. (She had her first vet appointment today, and the vet deemed her beautiful. As if we had any doubts. *g*)
