Went to turn on my computer tonight, and it's dead. As in a doornail. Forget about the spinning beach ball of death, it's not even powering up.

Sigh.

I had it in the shop a couple of months ago, and they told me the CPU was living on borrowed time, but I was hoping to get a few more months out of it. Looks like I'll be getting a shiny new Mac Pro sooner rather than later.

Fingers crossed the hard drives are intact and I didn't lose any data, 'cause it's a couple of months since I did a proper backup, and all my photos of Ros are on the bloody thing. Also fingers crossed that the Ultraviolet vid I've been working on for a ridiculous amount of time is recoverable.

At least I always send copies of stories I'm working on to my gmail account, so they're safe. And I've got my work laptop to tide me over till I can get the new machine in place.

Double sigh.

In other, better new, I finally finished what I hope is the last big set of changes on my Pros novel today. So, yay for that.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Not the Ultraviolet vid! Please, let's hope you're able to recover that.

In better news, yay for Pros. :-D

I'd wondered what you've been up to. You've been awfully quiet!

If I can't recover the Ultraviolet vid, I may take it as the vidding gods telling me to move on. Or not. (At least I've got the QT version you've seen, even if I've done a crap load of tweaking since that version.)

But yeah, at least the Pros novel is done. Mostly. (I'll be looking for foolish mortals to take a look at it for line edits next, so if you have some time... *g*)

I haven't been on LJ much except for the occasional drive by. What little computer time I've had I've been plowing into finishing the novel. The remainder of my time has been taken up with a crazy amount of work, Ros, a visit from my mom, trying to watch the bazillion shows clogging up our PVR and just general exhaustion. And now I'll be spending god knows how long getting a new system up and running. Fun.

Condolences on the computer front. (Although, it will be fun to have a new one! *g*)

Congratulations on the Pros novel! That's terrific. Well done! And whew! *g*

Sorry to hear about the computer (though a Mac Pro sure sounds nice!) and I hope the hard drives haven't taken a hit!

A new Pros novel? :)
Is it going to be a zine or online?

First Mac? Welcome to the dark side. ;-)

And I can't wait to read your novel! Who's going to be publishing it?

My desktop did exactly that a couple of years ago. I turned it on and nothing. My sonny boy did recover everything from the HD, so I hope yours went to cyberheaven the same way.

New vid? New Pros? I'm praying with you! I'm free to beta if you need a hand although I'm sure you have much better qualified folks on hand. *g*

New computer = Fun!
Setting up new computer, not so much.

As for the novel, there is still tweaking to be done, but I think the heavy lifting is all done. (If you ever have time--yeah, I know--I'd still love for you to take a look at it.)

I've been looking at the Mac Pros for six months. And wishing that I'd bought one of the bloody things in September like I was planning on.

The novel will definitely be a zine. (I've spent wayyyyy too long on it to simply put it online. Plus, I've tentatively lined up a fabulous illustrator. *eg*)

I'm hoping to have the novel ready to go next summer, but I'll definitely let everyone know when it's ready.

It's the pics that have me most worried. At least I've got backup of everything to about August.

I've owned Mac since my first computer in 1991. (Crikey, that was a long time ago, wasn't it?)

I'm not sure yet about who's publishing the novel. I might take the plunge and do it myself. If all goes well, I'm hoping to have it out by next summer.

I'm hoping it's just the CPU or power supply, and that whatever it is, it didn't take out the hard drives on the way out.

The vid is so far from beta, it isn't even funny. (It's a six and a half minute, fast beat, trip hop number, so the cutting is murderously fast and it's been taking for-freaking-ever.) And I've my copy editor all lined up for the novel. Though I really do need to run it by a native Brit to catch any last flubs. But thanks for the offer.

oh noes!

Your computer isn't that old is it? Seems like just yesterday you were going on about how shiny and new it was.

Hope your data is okay. I guess that is my cue to go and do a backup of my machine.

It's over five years old, so it's time had definitely come.

The new one is ordered and, I hope, on its way. I should know later this week if the data is also dead, dead deadski. (Let's hope not.)

And yes! Backup your machine! Back it up now!
