Work is busy (I'm now officially fully booked up till the end of 2010) but sort of manageable, the film fest is over, and the festering pit that is our house is gradually coming under control. I had grand plans to get back to some regular vidding and writing.

So what happens? My nice, shiny, new-ish Mac decides to pack it in.

It had been a bit glitchy the last couple of weeks (it would randomly throw up a blue screen for a second every once in a while) and I was going to run some diagnostics on it this week to see if it was the video card or the monitor. But it seems the latest Apple security update was too much for it and it just started freezing every time I booted.

And then when I tried booting it from the install disk, there was that ozone-y, burn-y smell.

At least the call to Apple's help line was reasonably painless. Seems like telling them that something inside your machine probably caught fire is a ticket to immediately getting them to approve a visit to a service centre without an hour of "Have you tried this?" questions. It also got me the liability control "Were you injured? Was your property damaged?" treatment, but I can live with that.

I've just got my fingers crossed that the repair is easier than the last time I had a Mac go bad on me. That was six months of yelling at Apple until they finally agreed my non-functioning Mac was a lemon and gave me a new one.
