I wasn't going to do this because in spite of, or perhaps because of, having done the grad school thing, I don't often get all introspective about writing, either mine or anyone else's. If pressed, I can very much lay out why I love certain stories or why others leave me cold, but I don't spend a lot of time thinking consciously about writing styles or themes or what have you. I'd rather spend the time actually doing the writing/vidding or watching movies/theatre/TV that is going to engage me enough to do the writing/vidding. I adore that some people are introspective when it comes to these matters (hey ya, [livejournal.com profile] justacat) and eagerly read their posts, and in person I'll discuss this sort of stuff ad infinitum, but it's not my usual sort of thing to write it all down.

But this meme kinda kept sticking with me, so I finally decided to give it a shot. So, may I present...

Ten ways to know you're reading a story by P.R.Zed

1. There's a lot of parenthetical sentence construction. Parentheses are my friends. M-dashes are too.

2. Long, rambling paragraphs will be followed immediately by a very short paragraph. A short paragraph of one sentence in length. A short sentence at that. Possibly even a fragment.

3. Issues of abandonment abound.

4. My titles often suck or are boring. And if they don't suck, someone else likely came up with them. (My Golden Afternoon with the Grim Reaper? Totally the creation of a friend from uni.)

5. There is plenty of dialogue/banter/snark.

6. In my longer pieces, there is an abundance of plot. Especially true in the UNCLE and Wild Wild West stories.

7. If it's an UNCLE/WWW story, not so much with the hot sex. If it's a Pros/LotR/RPS story, there's lotsa hot sex. Or at least the suggestion that hot sex is just around the corner.

8. If I don't catch 'em, and if my betas/editors don't catch 'em, there are too damn many repeated words and phrases.

9. On occasion, there will be messing with non-linear narrative structures.

10. There will be mostly third person, a sprinkling of first person and a dash of second person. Sometimes all in the same story.
