Nov. 17th, 2006 11:48 pmSo, I just got back from seeing Casino Royale. And am very, very pleased.
I love the Bond films, but for longer than I can remember I've been wishing they'd lose the gadgets, forego the stupid quips and get back to the grittier Bond of the novels. In fact my oft expressed wish is that they'd finally film Casino Royale, and do it properly.
Seems like the cinema gods were listening to me for once.
Yeah, they replaced the baccarat with poker, and Ian Fleming didn't have much to do with the crazy, yet utterly amazing, parkour action scene at the beginning. And yet, the essential spine of the book is intact. The relationship with Vesper is as it should be. The scene of LeChiffre torturing Bond is pretty much exactly as it is in the book. And my favourite line, the very last line of the novel, also made it in there.
And Daniel Craig? Is utterly wonderful. He's completely believable in vicious hand-to-hand combat, is lovely to look at in swimtrunks and cleans up very nicely indeed in a tux. And he can act!
All in all, I couldn't be happier.
Now I just have to convince the big guy to get over his Bond phobia and see it. 'Cause I'm definitely feeling the need to see it more than once.
