TIFF Day Five
Sep. 10th, 2007 10:57 pmTitle: Encounters at the End of the World
Director: Werner Herzog
Country: U.S.
P's Rating: Recommended
Werner Herzog's specialty is dealing with subjects, factual and fictional, who are obsessed with things out of the ordinary. His latest documentary sees him travel to Antarctica where he encounters bizarre wildlife and landscape (creepy sea life to suicidal penguins to live volcanoes), the scientists who study the continent and the support staff who find their way to the bottom of the world. The tone is set when Herzog interviews the driver who picks up new arrivals in a behemoth of a bus and finds the man is a former banker from Oregon who quit his job, joined the Peace Corps in Guatermala where he survived nearly being macheted by the locals. The people he finds are as fascinating as the otherworldly environment in which he finds himself.
