Extended Edition Goodness

przedI picked up the TTT EE on Tuesday at lunch, but couldn't watch it that night since I was going with a few friends and the S.O to see Pete Postlethwaite in Scaramouche Jones, a one man play. (The play was all right, but more clever than really well written, and Pete, much as I love him, is far better suited to film than the stage. He couldn't project his voice nearly enough, and his physical presence was not enough to carry a one man play. Still, I'm glad we went.
So, Wednesday I actually got to sit down and watch the whole thing. Enjoyed the new scene of Gollum early on, and really liked the scene of Aragorn turning Brego loose before the emptying of Edoras. In fact, the early Brego scene pretty much turned me around on the whole Aragorn falls off the cliff sequence. If we've scene his connection to the horse early on, that bit suddenly makes far more sense.
And then, of course, there's the new Boromoir flashback. My first reaction on seeing him atop the walls of Osgiliath delivering a speech to the troops was delighted laughter. He's back! And we get to see him in a moment of triumph! (It doesn't hurt that I find it adorable to hear that hint of the Sheffield accent creeping in whenever Sean delivers an emotional, heightened speech.) I honestly would have been happy if we'd just gotten Faramir's vision of Boromir's funeral boat--okay, I would have been livid if we hadn't gotten Faramir's vision; just ask my S.O.--but to have that full scene of Boromir with his brother and father...words cannot express how grateful I am that this is on the disk.
I also really like the additional scenes of Faramir we get at the end. His temptation is more understandable in light of the flashback, but these last scenes of him helping Frodo leave Osgiliath bring out the goodness in his character that was visible in the book, but nearly missing from the theatrical release. All of which makes me adore Faramir more than ever.
Now, the I have the disks, I'm itching to get to work on a LOTR vid again. And I know just the song...
