Le Sigh

I am currently supposed to be on vacation, hanging out at a lovely cottage with another family and their daughter who is Ros' age. Instead, I ended up at work today and stuck in the city on a day when Toronto was not only the hottest place in Canada, but managed to be the hottest it's ever been.

This would be because yesterday I got a call from Ros' daycare in the afternoon, and she'd managed to spike a fever of 102 F. I left work early, rushed to the daycare, and found Le Ros burning up and miserable. So it was rush home, get Tylenol and some liquids into her, and wait to see what happened.

The Sweetie stayed home with her today, and the Tylenol is getting the fever down, but it spiked again last night (though she was remarkably cheerful about it), this morning and this afternoon. We're hoping we don't get another spike tonight, because then we might be able to travel up to the cottage. If she's not over it by Saturday, we'll definitely be stuck in the city for the duration.

At least she's mostly been handling it pretty well. She goes glassy-eyed when the fever spikes, but hasn't done the crying hysterically thing again since I first brought her home yesterday. And when the fever is just low grade, she's loopy and cheerful. (Too loopy, really, but I'll take that over crying hysterically.)

Also on the positive side, we have air conditioning, and the house has been staying mostly cool without having it on too much. Which is good, because it is freaking miserable out there. (Toronto is like a ghost town. Everyone's hunkering down indoors until the heat breaks.) And also, I'm utterly and completely knackered. (Apart from the fever thing, there was frenzied preparing for the trip that didn't happen, and a soccer game, and discussions with the neighbour we're hiring to, finally, landscape our front yard, and a surprise visit from one of my best friends from grad school who's father has ended up unexpectedly in ICU after minor surgery.)

I'm ready for this week to be over.

And if we don't get up north, and I dearly hope we do, then I'm planning on making sure we at least get out to the Toronto islands for a day on the weekend. At least there can be picnicking and playing on the beach and visiting the Centreville amusement park.
