Le Sigh

I am currently supposed to be on vacation, hanging out at a lovely cottage with another family and their daughter who is Ros' age. Instead, I ended up at work today and stuck in the city on a day when Toronto was not only the hottest place in Canada, but managed to be the hottest it's ever been.

This would be because yesterday I got a call from Ros' daycare in the afternoon, and she'd managed to spike a fever of 102 F. I left work early, rushed to the daycare, and found Le Ros burning up and miserable. So it was rush home, get Tylenol and some liquids into her, and wait to see what happened.

The Sweetie stayed home with her today, and the Tylenol is getting the fever down, but it spiked again last night (though she was remarkably cheerful about it), this morning and this afternoon. We're hoping we don't get another spike tonight, because then we might be able to travel up to the cottage. If she's not over it by Saturday, we'll definitely be stuck in the city for the duration.

At least she's mostly been handling it pretty well. She goes glassy-eyed when the fever spikes, but hasn't done the crying hysterically thing again since I first brought her home yesterday. And when the fever is just low grade, she's loopy and cheerful. (Too loopy, really, but I'll take that over crying hysterically.)

Also on the positive side, we have air conditioning, and the house has been staying mostly cool without having it on too much. Which is good, because it is freaking miserable out there. (Toronto is like a ghost town. Everyone's hunkering down indoors until the heat breaks.) And also, I'm utterly and completely knackered. (Apart from the fever thing, there was frenzied preparing for the trip that didn't happen, and a soccer game, and discussions with the neighbour we're hiring to, finally, landscape our front yard, and a surprise visit from one of my best friends from grad school who's father has ended up unexpectedly in ICU after minor surgery.)

I'm ready for this week to be over.

And if we don't get up north, and I dearly hope we do, then I'm planning on making sure we at least get out to the Toronto islands for a day on the weekend. At least there can be picnicking and playing on the beach and visiting the Centreville amusement park.

That sounds like a rough week. Hope you do get away.

The islands were fabulous earlier this month when we visited. Wish we would have had more time to spend there.

I'm sorry petal. There's nothing much scarier or more difficult to manage in the world than a sick child. *hugs you*

I hope that her temperature doesn't spike again tonight and that you can get away for a few days break. ♥

It's mostly just been bloody exhausting. Not to mention disappointing. But the fever hasn't come back tonight--knock on wood--so we might actually get away tomorrow.

If not, the islands will be a fab alternative.

It's just been exhausting more than anything, not helped by the fact that I've been putting myself further and further into sleep debt doing stupid things like staying up until 2 a.m. on the weekends writing. ::headdesk::

At least Ros' temperature is holding tonight. If it continues like that, we may just make it up north for a couple of days.

I'm going to keep everything crossed for you. It sounds like you could all do with a real break. I've heard from other Toronto mates as well how the city is an oven.

Let's hope this morning finds things better and you guys on your way! Have a good time. Unfortunately I shall be outside working yet again today in the swelter so wish me luck! *packs extra water in cooler* :)

We have hopes that we'll make it out today, though we're just getting up and haven't taken the little girl's temperature yet.

You definitely have my good thoughts today. I could not imagine working outside in this right now. Pack that water and keep hydrated!

It pretty much is like an oven out there, but then I'm sure you don't have it any better and it sounds like a good chunk of North America is getting this awful heat. You take care too!

Poor Ros, it can't be fun for her to be running a fever when the temperature is so high. Lucky she's kept cheerful. Hopefully things will stabilise and you'll be able to get away.

This week is jinxed. *glares*

You must be worn out - there's nothing as knackering as worrying/looking after a sick child. I can't imagine trying to do it and cope with the heat too.

I hope Ros is tons better today, and that you guys manage to get a break.

Well, the fever stayed away all night. We're going to give it to 11 this morning, which is when the morning spike usually happens, and if it's still fine we'll be throwing everything into the car and taking off. Fingers crossed!

This week could definitely have been better.

I can't imagine having a fever the last few days. I don't blame her for spontaneously breaking out in tears the first day.

But she's better today and it looks like we're going to actually get up north so YAY!

By this morning Ros was fine, so we are now enjoying a relaxing time on the shores of a lovely lake. And none too soon. *g*
