When I found out that the Royal Shakespeare Company would be bringing The Hollow Crown to Toronto, I couldn't have been happier. When the initial cast was announced--Vanessa Redgrave, Ian Richardson and Donald Sinden--I was pleased, without being ecstatic. But I just found out that they left one name out of the initial publicity: Alan Howard.

Now, I'm ecstatic!

Howard is number two on my list of British theatre actors that I'd love to see live. (Number one is currently Judy Dench, who I always just seem to miss when I'm in London.) He starred in a ground-breaking production of Coriolanus in 1977 that totally pushed the already blatant homoerotic subtext of the play. I've devoured every review and description of that production and have always wished I could have seen. (I was only twelve at the time, and in the wrong country. Where's that time machine when you need it.) He is also singularly responsible for me watching the otherwise completely unremarkable Rob Lowe movie, Oxford Blues, more times than I can remember.

Oh, and for you LotR fans, he's the voice of the Ring.

Very, very pleased.

Alan Howard

Hi,
Hope you like Hollow Crown! It's hardly a play though - you should see Alan in action proper! Have you seen his website? www.alanhoward.org.uk ?

All the best,
Jan
