Skating Ahoy

Ros signed up for the ice show at her figure skating club this year. Which turns out to be a bigger deal than I knew. This week there has been a final rehearsal and a run through and a dress rehearsal. Last night was the first of three shows.

So after teaching all day (unusual for me these days; I do far more writing than teaching in my job), I spent four hours volunteering in the dressing room with Ros, four other moms, and the 24 other little girls in her number, which meant lots of doing up skates and making sure everyone had all the bits of their costume on and occasionally preventing girls from turning off all the light so everyone else would squeal.

And then I came home and fell over, exhausted. Pretty much literally.

But Ros had fun, and here is some photographic proof.



Today we do it all again. Twice! Though fortunately I won't be volunteering today, and I actually get to watch the show at today's matinee performance. (My mom came down to watch the show, and there will be throwing of flowers for Ros during the Grand Finale.)

It will be the Sweetie's turn to fall over tonight. He's volunteered to help with the take down after the last show. Apparently that can go on until one in the morning.

She is a sweetie. And the falling over was of the becoming horizontal as soon as I sat down, OMG I'm TIRED sort, so nothing a good night's sleep didn't fix. Mostly. *g*

I doubt she'll ever make the Olympics, but she's definitely having fun with the skating, and that's all I hope for.

It wasn't so much a spill as an OMG I'm So. Tired collapse into exhaustion, but I'm better now, and ready to do it all again. *g*

See, you expect the exhaustion when they are infants, right? But somehow it just…continues! Parenthood=super exhaustion all the time! *g* Honestly, the most exhausted I have ever been in my life, even including heatstroke, was when I would follow me niece on a shopping expedition when she was pre-teen, early teen ages. So, my advice? Sign up for ice shows and soccer coaching and martial arts, and everything else! But do not shop. *g*

Yay for ice shows and doesn't Ros look wonderful and professional? Enjoy the show today!

I still love skating, and am quite happy to enable Ros. (Though we ran into a friend in the lobby whose daughter is now seriously competitive in figure skating, and he confirmed that it's a big old money pit.)

It's a different kind of exhaustion now, but yeah, the exhaustion continues. I'll take the massive activity exhaustion over the keeping up with a toddler exhaustion any day, though. I think that would kill me now.

I'm quite happy to avoid the shopping, except in small bursts, but I have no doubt it's coming. (Ros is already a shoe fanatic, and I can see that only getting worse. It must be genetic because she did not get the shoe obsession from me. *g*)

I'm currently sitting comfortably in our living room for an hour before I have to go pick Ros up from the final show. I'm much better today, but it was Ros who got glassy-eyed and keeled over between the two shows. Very glad there's only three of them.

Her having fun is the best reason to get into this figure skating madness. She really does love it. (I'm just hoping we can avoid her loving it too much. We ran into an old friend at this afternoon's show and found out his oldest is into serious competitive figure skating. He confirmed it's a good way to completely empty out your wallet. (His daughter is ten and has three coaches. Three!)

She's totally having fun. I've never seen her put this much effort into anything before.

The red is yarn that gives marks her lesson group. They have fifty or sixty kids on the ice at once, and divide them into smaller groups by colour. It looks like mass chaos, but it's remarkably efficient.

The volunteering was fun, but OMG exhausting. (It was a reminder as to why I should never teach grade school. I'd be dead in a week. Give me teenagers any time.)

The show was fun, and it was great to see the kids' hard work pay off. (It's after midnight and the Sweetie's still not back. Yikes!)

The skating outfit was fun. And it was nice to do some volunteering again. (Soccer season is just about upon us, so it'll soon be time to start coaching some little girls.)
