It seems to have been my weekend for experiencing gay culture.

Last night we went to a CD release concert for local band The Hidden Cameras The Cameras brand of music has been called "gay church music" by more than one critic and that pretty much fits. They're a fantastic, if anarchic, shifting collective of musicians led by the talented Joel Gibb, who produce angelic sounding music with lyrics both witty and profane. If you haven't heard them before, seek their music out immediately. And if you happen to be in Toronto on August 28, check out their free show at Harbourfront. You won't regret it.

Today, we attended the gay wedding of one of my favourite cousins. Said cousin came out in his 40s, and has now found a lovely man with whom he wants to share the rest of his life. The ceremony was in the Metropolitan Community Church, the place where the very first legal gay marriage was performed in Canada. It's a beautiful older church, and its pastor is a sane, compassionate human being who led one of the nicest marraige services I've ever attended. (In the unlikely event I ever decided to return to Christianity, I think the MCC is one of the only churches I'd consider attending.) The reception dinner was at a very nice restaurant in the heart of Toronto's Gay Village.

So tonight, I'm just feeling thankful that I live in a place where you can legally marry the person you love, no matter their gender, and where you can see an openly gay band perform joyously outrageous music in the company of gay and straight music lovers and it's not considered a sign of the coming apocalypse.

I was wondering if you and the boy went out to see the band last night.

Don had mentioned that you were thinking of seeing a band on Friday instead of Bob La Flambeur at Cinematheque.

In other news I just found out Rob from New Zealand is in town and that you guys are getting together with him tomorrow. Wow, I am so out of the loop. Rob tells me he told Kathryn to pass the word around that he was in town for a week. I laughed when told me this and said sarcastically - who's Kathryn?

What are you guys doing tomorrow?

We're supposedly doing a bruncy/lunchy thing with Rob, tho' the details have yet to be determined. He's going to call us when plans are finalized. Shall we call you when we know what's up?

Sure, give me a call. Not sure if I'll actually come out or not, but would appreciate the invite.
