Hey There! And Hockey!

As my first official DW post, I thought I'd put up the pic I was going to post on LJ before the TOS thing happened.

It's a pic from the final day of the Learn to Play hockey class I took, along with a bunch of other lovely women. (I'm the short one in a teal and black jersey in the back row.)

That is completely awesome! I only ever tried ice-skating once, as a kid. I can't even imagine ice skating *and* actually playing a sport at the SAME TIME. My hat is so off to you.

Ros is playing this year, so I've also become a hockey mom. But as the Sweetie has pointed out, most hockey moms don't end up playing themselves. ;-)

I think I'm a bit more rickety than you are, so you could totally do it. As for the skating, find the right program and they'll get you there. (One of my teammates is an immigrant from China who'd never been on skates until two years ago, and she's one of the tougher players now.)

My first hockey lesson was frankly terrifying. I couldn't stop properly, and had a couple of crazy spills because I was out of control on the ice. I feel like I got to the spot where I was doing okay. Not actually good, but okay. ;-)

Yay for learing to play hockey! I love how you guys just call it hockey like its the default, which it prob is over there, whereas for us we don't have ice, so just hockey played on, like, grass :)

I am very impressed, and great pic! When we talk about hockey in the UK we're generally thinking of the non-slidey version. Not that there aren't ice hockey teams and leagues and so on but it's not a big sport here either professionally or in school/college. Mind you, hockey itself here has a 'jolly hockey sticks' image, ie a sport only played at posh girls' schools, but the national women's team did pretty well in Rio. No idea why I'm rambling about hockey - I've never played any version *g*

Ice hockey is the default here. Any other sort (ball/field/floor) gets the appropriate identifier. ;-)

Well, I try. Though I sadly didn't get into the spring hockey session before it filled up. Will have to try again in the fall.

The slidey version of hockey is all encompassing here. Which I knew before Ros (and I) got into it, but I didn't really know.

Before this year, I'd only played the field hockey version, and my memories of it are of getting my fingers and shins whacked with a great bloody wooden stick. Not my sport at all. (At least for slidey hockey you're wearing so much gear it's difficult, though not impossible, to get hurt in a friendly game.)

It was surprisingly fun. It no doubt helped that everyone else was also a middle-aged woman with no ego in need of propping up. ;-)

Yay hockey! You all look great and I think it's fabulous that you're playing. I'm a huge hockey fan but can't skate to save my life.

Learning to skate as an adult is no easy thing. I'm decent on skates, but I'm never going to be as good as someone who learned hockey as a kid.
