Thanks to our pal Colin Geddes, I got my hands on a double pass to The Island for tonight.

I don't think I'm being spoilery, but I'll put my reactions behind the cut for the sensitive.

I went in with extremely low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. Yeah, it's a big stupid Michael Bay film that strains credulity more than once, but it's also a big roller coaster of fun. It's far funnier than it has any right to be, plus it has one heck of a cast, and they go a great way to selling even the more goofball aspects of the plot.

Sean is, of course, utterly scrumptious playing Dr. Merrick. He's especially fine right at the end when he gets all mussed up. Plus, as always, I adore the fact that he can never quite hold onto the plummy accent all the way. (Check out the way he says "lottery." There's just a hint of Sheffield in the way he does a glottal stop on the Ts. Ahhh.)

As well as Sean, pretty much the whole cast was outstanding. Steve Buscemi was far too much fun. Djimoun Hounsou really needs to get a starring role in something because he is stunningly handsome, as well as being a fine actor. And Ewan is adorable as Lincoln Six Echo, and a hoot playing against himself when he meets his orginal, Tom Lincoln. Scarlett Johanson can only be described a luminous. (It's not entirely fair that she's young, stunningly attractive and an fabulous actress.)

So, turn off your brain, swallow the suspension of disbelief pill and go have a fun summer movie experience.
