They only replaced a handful of songs - Most of the original music is still there. However, it was a few of the most important songs... For instance, "My Hero's Have Always Been Cowboys" at the end of that ep sets the whole tone of the episode - one of my favorite moments in a favorite ep. Bah! Every time I watch it I'm so filled with hate I can't even concentrate!
The decision was made to nip out the cover tunes that would have cost big royalty money to include. Joey Scarborough *does* do the replacement music, but it's 20 years later and his style has changed significantly. The new songs stick out horribly and you can't even hear the lyrics most of the time, which were usually an intimate part of the scene. The lyrics to "The Eve of Destruction" (another outtake) was a key part of that particular scene - What's funny about that one is that later Ralph referrs to the song that was playing on the radio as "The Eve of Destruction"... They neglected to nip *that* out. ;-)
Blah blah blah - short story made long... It's only a few moments - I suppose I still would pay the money (if I hadn't already) - But it sure *burns*. And if they re-release (don't hold your breath), I'm afraid I'd pay them *again*.
