May. 24th, 2006 04:02 pmIt's been a crazy, if mostly great, week.
faramir_boromir arrived last Wednesday for a visit, which was fab. Wednesday evening the Sweetie and I took her to our favourite Chinese restaurant for salt-baked squid (no, really, it's wonderful!) and assorted other goodies.
On Thursday, she occupied herself by doing a tour of Queer as Folk shooting locations, learning the hard way that Canadian cities do not use the hundred block system of building numbering. (#6 is only four blocks up from #450, right? Um, no.) That night we met up to see Depeche Mode at the Air Canada Centre, the primary reason for her trip. I had somehow managed to get through all of high school and university in the 80's without seeing the Mode, so I was happy to put fill in that gap. Even sitting at the back of the ACC, Dave Gahan and company put on quite a show.
Friday morning I left her to take in as many Pros episodes as she could handle. (Yes, I am an incorrigible pimp. Go me.) In the afternoon, after I got off work, we tooled around town. For lunch, we went to Lick's, the local Toronto gourmet burger joint. Then we walked around the Distillery district, an artsy little area built on the site of the old Gooderham and Worts distillery. There are neat little galleries, a few performance spaces and various cafés in the old warehouse spaces. On the recommendation of the Sweetie, I took her to Soma Chocolates, where they do a terrific Mayan hot chocolate: chocolate mixed with a hint of chile peppers. I can't do chocolate myself, alas, but both the sweetie and
faramir_boromir assure me it's wonderful. The afternoon finished off with a visit to Glad Day, the local GBLT bookstore.
Friday evening, in the company of good friend
walfox, we took in Daniel McIvor's latest play at Buddies in Bad Times, our local GLBT theatre. The play, A Beautiful View, is about the relationship of two women who don't quite fit the label of lesbian or bisexual, but nonetheless realize by the end that more than friendship binds them. The writing could be a bit sharper at the beginning, but there are some hilarious moments--Pat Benetar's Heartbreaker performed by ukulele duet--and some very touching ones. (The Sweetie, who saw the play the night before us, loved the Heartbreaker moment. Pat Benetar is one of his big guilty pleasures.)
All too soon,
faramir_boromir's trip was over, and she left us Saturday morning after breakfast at our local diner.
Since then, we've been caught up in a flurry of activity. We've picked out hardwood for our second floor, prepped and painted the back bedroom. I've also gotten disks ready for MediaWest and have even done some work on my
summer_of_78 story.
Tomorrow, it's off to Lansing and MW for the usual fannish frenzy and the premiere of the Very Silly Vid (TM). I hope to see a bunch of you there. And I also hope to be doing more than the occasional drive-by on LJ very soon. (June is going to be as crazy as the past week, as we remove baseboards from and paint the whole second floor, then have the hardwood installed, but July looks to be a bit less nutty. Fingers crossed.)
