This cat didn't just show up quietly, he made sure to be noticed. He came running down the street, crying loudly, and ducked under a worker's van right in front of the house. He stayed there, wailing until someone came over to check on him. There was cat food inside, so he was given a meal, and that small moment quickly turned into something much bigger.

A visit to the vet confirmed he didn't have a microchip, and no one responded to neighborhood posts. It became clear that no one was coming to claim him. He wasn't just temporarily lost, he had been out there on his own and needed someone to step in.

This was exactly what had been hoped for, a cat showing up and making the choice on his own. After waiting a long time for something like that to happen naturally, it finally did, and there wasn't much hesitation about what to do next.

He settled in quickly once he was inside. He stays close, looks for attention, and already acts like he belongs there. He's affectionate, relaxed, and completely comfortable in his new space. There are still three dogs for him to adjust to, which may take some time, but it seems manageable. He's already handled a big change and appears to be taking everything in stride.

This year's Hugo nominees were announced early this week. In an unexpected development, I've read four of the Best Novel candidates (having finished the fourth the night before the announcement) and three (!) of the Best Novella candidates, which is more unusual, given how few novellas I read. I'm delighted that [personal profile] renay got nominated for Intergalactic Mixtape for Best Fanzine (all the more impressive for how new it still is!), as well as for The Hugo Spreadsheet of Doom for Best Related Work. ^_^

But the thing that hit me hardest is that A Girl and Her Fed is up for Best Graphic Story or Comic, having wrapped up its third (and for now, final) act last year. (On Bluesky, K.B. Spangler notes "The work *as a whole* is eligible as it concluded in 2025, but since that is 2000+ strips, we are including the 50+ strips from 2025 in the packet, with a cover page with links to Parts 1 and 2 for reader convenience." She and Ale Presser (who took over the actual art from Spangler a while back) will be attaching this cover to their Hugos submissions packet.

I love AGAHF (and especially the connected Rachel Peng novels, as I've said many times) so much, so this is a real joy.

Reading: I finished Adrian Tchaikovsky's Shroud (the aforementioned Hugo nominee that I finished the night before the announcement), and while I enjoyed the back half of it more than the beginning, it still never really got emotional hooks into me, which is required for me to particularly bond with any story. Fascinating worldbuilding, though, and a grimly plausible look at a future society where humanity lives to serve capitalism.

I've also finished reading the Hikaru no Go manga! According to Goodreads, I'd read as far as vol. 19 before (a loooooong time ago). (It's now been long enough since [personal profile] scruloose and I watched the c-drama that I mostly only remember my feelings about it, so I have no real sense of how faithful its plot wound up being by the end.)

Currently reading The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan.

Watching: As I mentioned last weekend, I asked [personal profile] scruloose if they'd be up for giving Justice in the Dark a shot, if only to give me the excuse to rewatch the first eight episodes before finally moving on to the ones that eventually got released in Japan after not being cleared to air in China. They agreed, and we're now four or five episodes in!

I haven't read any of the new release of Mo Du/Silent Reading yet (partly because I don't read nearly as much as I'd like, but also because I'm getting this series in hard copy, which makes it take even longer for me to get around to reading something >.<), so my memory of the novel from reading the fan translation several years ago is fairly fuzzy, but (as expected) I really, really like the main actors.

The tacked-on sci-fi framing is both bizarre and aggressively pushed, and since Mo Du, unlike Guardian, is a modern setting with no fantasy elements that needed to be given a sci-fit polish to make it passable, I can only assume its main purpose is to put extra distance between the genuinely horrific crimes and reality. (At the very least, I don't remember reading about any other explanation/theory, but it's been ages since I saw much talk about the drama that wasn't largely focused on the relationships/character dynamics--which is not a complaint, since that's totally what I'm here for.)

Working: This weekend I'm starting my adaptation of the penultimate volume of Yona of the Dawn. I read the translation a couple days ago and am having a lot (A LOT) of feelings. Send strength.

More pool problems

The pool water was a couple of degrees cooler than normal and the jets were shooting out cold water. This is has happened on the weekend so often, that a month or so ago, I asked the facilities lead what I should do when this happens and she had to contact Security and have them call her. I contacted security. The guy did not seem at all interested. I sent the lead an email. It could just be that the boiler needs to be switched on. If they wait until Monday, it will take several days for the pool to heat back up. It might be ok for swimming tomorrow but by Sunday, it will be too cold to be fun. Oh well. I've done what I could.

At least volleyball was good and not terribly chilly.

Today's Mariner game starts right after Elbow Coffee which starts in 30 minutes so that's my day!

First I need to get dressed.

Work on Chaos Agent, the next Jani book, continues at a slow but moderately steady pace.

The usual political and personality clashes abound, but the culture clashes are also mounting. So many opportunities to trip and fall on one's diplomatic face keep presenting themselves, and not all of them will end well.

The easiest way to start the weekend is cat memes.

Wholesome cat memes are the perfect way to kick off a slow, easy weekend. You open your phone thinking you'll scroll for a minute and end up staying a little longer without even noticing. It's quiet, low effort, and just feels good to look at. No chaos, no stress, just cats doing their thing.

They don't need much to work. A relaxed little loaf, a stretch, a cat just sitting there looking content. That's enough. No thinking, just scrolling. It's the purrfect way to ease into the weekend. You're not trying to be purrductive, you're just there for the vibe.

It also turns into a full scroll before you realize it. One turns into a few, then a few more. You tell yourself last one and then keep going anyway. It's not even on purpose, it just happens. You're just sitting there, fully committed to the moment.

There's something nice about how simple it is. No big setup, no overthinking, just cats being soft and easy to watch. It's the kind of thing you can keep coming back to without getting tired of it.

It's simple, it's soft, and it hits every time. A few wholesome cats and the weekend's already off to a good start.

We're kind of used to our cats being snippy with us… but did you know that stray cats do it to other cats as well?

We say this only half-jokingly. We're used to our cats "bullying" us. We're used to our cats stomping across our chests in the middle of the night. We're used to them stealing food off our plates. We're used to them following us to the bathroom, tearing into our groceries, sitting on our freshly dried laundry and bothering us during Zoom calls, showing their booties to each and every person we work with. We're used to it to the point that we actually love it. It's part of who they are. It's part of what makes them purrfect.

We imagine other cats are not quite as tolernt of this behavior. Stray cats who get bullied by other cats probably don't find it… cute, like we do. Their lives, as cats who have been shunned from the group, are full of challenges that every other stray cats don't have. Cats may like their space, but they are not solitary. They need the group, the affection, the care. And if other cats are not willing to give it… then maybe we humans can step in.

Caturday is here, and that means that it is officially time for our pawsome weekly kitty recap!

Even on the most difficult weeks, the thought of Caturday waiting in the distance keeps us going. On this day, we embrace our cattitudes purrfectly. Today, we can do anything and everything that we love. If that means curling up under a blanket with our cats, then so be it. If it means grabbing an extra snack for the both of us, that sounds pawsome. But of course, before all of that, we need to stop, relax, and look back at all the cat content that we missed this week.

Every single Caturday starts the same on ICHC - with the Caturday meowgazine. Here, we put together the most viral cat tweets, the most talked-about stories, the silliest memes that made people laugh even during the most difficult meowments of the week. Everything in one place. Because we think that starting Caturday with a recap of purrfection means starting it on the right paw, with a smile on our faces. That's priceless nowadays, and it is how we wish every morning could start. We wish you all a fantabulous Caturday, and we will see you here next week for more!

Clinician Guide: Constellation of Chronic Medical Conditions Commonly Seen in Autistic & ADHD Adults

https://allbrainsbelong.org/all-the-things/

In May 2022, we formed a Task Force of clinicians, patients, and community members to discuss what works (and does not work) to manage these medical conditions or symptoms. We also gathered information from more than 100 autistic adults. These individuals gave feedback based on their personal experiences. The content we share on this website combines evidence-based medicine, lived experience, and our clinical experiences treating patients with these conditions.

Don't get me wrong, I love doing them - five hours of reading, three hours of work, what's not to love? - but talking about them? Don't get me started. Every single time it's a back and forth to confirm the actual day the shift starts.

I got a shift through the staffing agency, and I say "So, to confirm, I go to work at midnight Monday?" and he goes "No, Sunday". "So, I leave my house at 11:30 today...?"

No, he meant midnight Monday to 8am Monday.

Every time I look at the schedule at the usual place I find myself momentarily baffled by the fact that the overnight shift is at the top, as the first shift of the day.

Also, literally as I typed that last sentence a spam text came in with the word "lpuuuu", which seems low effort even for a spam text. I get that their business model depends on weeding out everybody smart enough to say "Seems fake!", but seriously?

What would you say no if someone offered you their cute kitten out of the blue?

Being a purrfessional cat sitter seems like an amazing job. You get to spend your days living in other people's houses, meeting their cute cats, and being surrounded by cats you care for all the time. We're sure it comes with its fair share of downsides, like having to stay in really messy houses, seeing cats not living with owners who care for them like they should, etc, but what job doesn't have its negative side?

But then there are cases like the one below, where, after caring for her client's handsome Ragdoll kitten consistently, the family offered for her to keep him. They were planning on selling him, but that broke her heart, and she decided to take him, even knowing that she couldn't keep him for a long time. It's hard to have a pet of your own when you don't have a consistent home schedule, we might even say it's impawssible.

She took the kitten anyway and introduced him to her boyfriend, who had never owned a cat before. The boyfriend even watched the kitten while she went to cat sit for another client, and let's just say this story is proof that everything happens for a reason.

Adopting a cat means you have full responsibility for them for the rest of their nine lives, with no opportunities to opt out on demand. It's sad to us that some people don't seem to understand that.

It's true that there are some reasons in this world for cat pawrents to give up, with all the sadness of the situation, and search for their cat a different home than theirs. These decisions are never made lightly, they involve a heart heavy like a ton of bricks, and probably a lot of tears, fears, but most of all - thoughts about the cat's well-being. Not a single person who needs to rehome a cat for a justified reason, like being evicted and not having a home for your cat, does this for their own benefit. Never ever.

Moving away is never a good reason to rehome your cat. If you have the time, money, and energy to move your entire life away in a truck, you don't get to simply go "but without my cat" in the situation. Moving away without your cat is vile. Period. Is it complicated to do so? Sure. But would you do this to a child? Absolutely not. So why is a cat any exception? We have a friend who moved countries, literally to another continent, and he made sure his wife and he are taking all four of their feline family members with them. Because that's what they are - family members.
