Flicks and Icons

So, I just got back from seeing Casino Royale. And am very, very pleased.

I love the Bond films, but for longer than I can remember I've been wishing they'd lose the gadgets, forego the stupid quips and get back to the grittier Bond of the novels. In fact my oft expressed wish is that they'd finally film Casino Royale, and do it properly.

Seems like the cinema gods were listening to me for once.

Yeah, they replaced the baccarat with poker, and Ian Fleming didn't have much to do with the crazy, yet utterly amazing, parkour action scene at the beginning. And yet, the essential spine of the book is intact. The relationship with Vesper is as it should be. The scene of LeChiffre torturing Bond is pretty much exactly as it is in the book. And my favourite line, the very last line of the novel, also made it in there.

And Daniel Craig? Is utterly wonderful. He's completely believable in vicious hand-to-hand combat, is lovely to look at in swimtrunks and cleans up very nicely indeed in a tux. And he can act!

All in all, I couldn't be happier.

Now I just have to convince the big guy to get over his Bond phobia and see it. 'Cause I'm definitely feeling the need to see it more than once.

Good luck on seeing the film. And on becoming a dad again!

I don't think Don will ever get over the invisible car in the last Bond film. But I've got my fingers crossed he'll unbend long enough to see this one. He might even enjoy it.

Phobic?

I think przed overstates matters. I am not Bond-phobic, I am more Bond-indifferent, at least as far as the last two decade's worth of Bond films are concerned. The ones I've seen have been terrible and the ones I haven't seen have nothing to recommend that I waste my time with them. But while it has been fun winding przed up about the new film over the last couple of weeks, the general good word has convinced me to see it eventually.

Sooguy: the film you should see is The Prestige.
