Today, some film studies geekery: the shot/reverse shot. This is one of the basic editing building blocks that T.V. shows are constructed on: you have a shot of one character, followed by a second shot of the character he's talking too.

So why should a Pros fan care about this? Because it allows for all sorts of lovely nonverbal communication between our two lads. So here's some nice examples of the form from some Pros eps.

First up, Hunter/Hunted, and the scene where the lads attempt to defuse the bomb delivered to Doyle's flat. They're focused on their task, of course, but their attention on each other is possibly even more intense.

Two more shots from the same scene, but close-ups this time. I swear, the heat between the two of them could melt steel.

But the shot/reverse shot doesn't have to be about intensity. Sometimes it can just be fun. In Fall Girl, Bodie just wants to be all broody about his ex, but he can't resist Doyle's crazy humour forever. And when he finally relents and cracks a smile, Doyle's own face lights up like the sun.

A last fun example from Killer with a Long Arm. Bodie's pratting around with Doyle about having dated Betty, but the scene is really all about the two of them playing off each other. Bodie's just far too smug about having scored a point off Doyle. Doyle, in turn, gives him another high voltage grin.

I'm with you on the bomb defusing moments. I actually capped from the phone bomb moment in Purging for this as well, but they weren't quite a prime looking out of context, so I decided to go with two times the Hunter caps. (Then there's the bomb defusing in Runner...lovely, that.)

These are lovely. The bomb-defusing intensity - it's what Dorinda captures in her Festival of Lights, I think (plus the Cowley pov bonus). Gorgeous pics, thank you!

Festival of Lights is such a lovely story. Not least because it shows what a canny bastard Cowley is. (And I mean that in the best possible way.) Thank you for reminding me of it.
