Well, we drew a box number about three quarters of the way back in the film fest lottery. Which turned out to be good news for me, and not-so-good news for the Sweetie. (There were only two films he had his heart set on, and he didn't get either one.)

But as further proof that he is the best Sweetie in the world, this morning he managed to snag me a ticket for the first screening of Appaloosa. Which means I'll be seeing Viggo Mortensen not once, but twice this fest. (With any luck, his bestest boyfriend, David Cronenberg, will be at one of the screenings and they can act all cute together.)

I've actually ended up with tickets to both screenings of Good, the other film Viggo has in the fest, but I'm thinkin' I'll only go to one of them.

Just for fun, here's a pic of Viggo, complete with crazy Appaloosa facial hair

With any luck, I'll have time to put up my usual capsule reviews.

He's definitely one of those actors who disappears into his roles. I've loved him for years, so it's really nice to see him getting interesting films these days.

He's definitely one of those actors who disappears into his roles. Yes indeed. (On the contrary to acters that seem alwys to play some versions of them selves) But he's still to recognize with that intense gaze of his. I haven't seen him before LOTR except the small but still impressive part in Witness, but I've occaisionally seen him in older films since then.
I like that icon!

I saw him in The Indian Runner in 1991, and had an immediate "who is that guy" moment. I've followed his career ever since. (I saw G.I Jane in a theatre just for Viggo. And then there's the straight to video fare like The Prophecy. Both of which aren't bad, actually.) Pre-LotR, the Sweetie used to disparagingly refer to him as one of "your guys," but even he admits now that he's a stunningly good actor.

I really liked The Indian Runner - the obvious aside! I liked the principle behind the movie, the dysfunction of the brothers' relationship and the nihilism that was/became inevitable as he drifted further and further from family and friends who couldn't comprehend his problems and conflicts.

Have you seen The Brave, btw? Johnny Depp stars and directs, it's worthwhile hunting it out on dvd if you haven't. I put both of them in with Candy, the Heath Ledger film, as terrific examinations of society and masculinity All of them feature wonderful leading man 'turns' playing men who have lost their place in society.

Haven't seen The Brave, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. Candy somehow completely failed to register on my radar, and I saw most of Ledger's films when they came out, even the wretched Casanova.

Whoops! It looks like you answered the question I'd left in one of your other entries (I didn't get a look in at LJ yesterday--can you tell? *g*). Have fun, hon.

Well, this is just a wee fraction of what I'm seeing. I've got 20 films scheduled over 9 days.

First one up tomorrow is JCVD, in which Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a washed-up, meta version of himself. I can't wait. (Van Damme is one of my favourite guilty pleasures from wayyyy back.) Follow that up with Appaloosa tomorrow night, and I should have a very good first day of the fest.

20 films! Oy!! You are going to be a busy bee. Are you taking off work, or simply going in the evenings?

Don and I both take the week off. We'll see stuff during the day, and alternate weekends and evenings so there's someone always home with Ros. Though we did get babysitting so we can both go to the final midnight screening. It's a crazy looking Thai martial arts film, so we both had to go.

20 is more than last year's 8, but no where near my record year of 36. (Admittedly, my brain was leaking out of my ears by the end of that fest and I swore never to see more than 30 a fest again.)

Good idea. I hear all that gray matter stains. ;-)

I like that your film festival happens before *our* festival - I get a heads-up on things. :-)

Keep your eyes on this space.

Not to mention here and here, the two local alternative papers that review a ton of the fest films.
