Adventures in Commuting

Yesterday had a particularly bad start.

I'm driving to work, and approaching this bit where the road I take does this swooping curve. Before I hit the curve, some idiot coming the other way cut off a bloke in a Bell van. As I hit the curve, the Bell van swerved and screeched to a halt to avoid said idiot, causing the poor bloke in the car behind the Bell van to brake and swerve into oncoming traffic, i.e. me.

Fortunately, he only got a bit into my lane before he must have seen me coming and turned back into the Bell van. Unfortunately, he couldn't stop in time, collided with the van as I came level with both of them, meaning I drove through a cloud of car bits flying through the air. (All I remember was thinking I hope nothing breaks through my windshield, and I'm lucky nothing did.) Of course, the idiot who caused it all took off.

I swerved myself, pulled over, and sat shaking behind the wheel for a few minutes. Then I went to make sure the other two guys were okay. Miraculously, they were. (The car was totalled. The rad had been pushed almost up to the windshield.) I made sure they'd called someone, gave them my card, and drove to work, trying not to flinch anytime anyone did anything even remotely goofy on the road.

I'm so very glad I made it through the whole thing pretty much unscathed (the debris that dinged off my car didn't even scratch it), but also still kinda freaked at how close I came to being in an accident that was very bad indeed.

Hopefully that's my bad driving karma used up for the next little while.

OMG, that's horrible! I'm so glad you're okay. A near miss is a wonderful thing in many ways. But it's still a freaky thing, so take it easy.

What an awful experience for you! I am so glad to hear that you and your car came out of it completely unscathed, and that no one else was hurt. And I can really sympathise with you feeling a little jumpy for the rest of your journey.

Oh, gosh, I hope that's your bad driving karma used up for years. That's so scary and so unavoidable. I'm glad you're okay. I'm glad the other drivers are okay.

I've had a few of those near misses and they are always nerve rattling. Never drove through a cloud of flying car parts though.
